For more detailed information, refer to each of the features which can be found later in this owner manual. Starting the Engine The vehicle has a Computer-Controlled Cranking System. It assists in starting the engine and protects components. If the ignition key is turned to START and then released when the engine begins cranking, the engine will continue cranking for a few seconds or until the engine starts. If the engine does not start and the key is held in START, cranking will be stopped after 15 seconds to prevent damage. To prevent gear damage, cranking is not allowed if the engine is running. Engine cranking can be stopped by turning the ignition key to ACC/ ACCESSORY or LOCK/OFF. See Starting the Engine on page 9-15. Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System The RKE transmitter may work up to 60 m (195 ft) away from the vehicle. With Remote Start Shown Press the key release button to extend the key blade. The key can be used for the ignition and all locks. Press K to unlock the driver door or all doors. Press Q to lock all doors. Lock and unlock feedback can be personalized. See Vehicle Personalization on page 5-29. If equipped, press and hold Y to release the trunk. Press and release 7 to initiate vehicle locator. Press and hold 7 for at least three seconds to sound the panic alarm. Press 7 again to cancel the panic alarm. See Keys on page 2-1 and Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Operation on page 2-3. Remote Vehicle Start If equipped with this feature, the engine can be started from outside the vehicle. See Remote Vehicle Start on page 2-5. Door Locks To lock or unlock the doors from outside the vehicle: . Use the key in the driver door to lock all doors or unlock the driver door only. . Press Q or K on the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter. See Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Operation on page 2-3. Starting the Vehicle 1. Aim the RKE transmitter at the vehicle. 2. Press and release Q. 3. Immediately after completing Step 2, press and hold / for at least four seconds or until the turn signal lamps flash. When the engine starts, the parking lamps will turn on and remain on as long as the engine is running. The doors will be locked and the climate control system may come on. The engine will continue to run for 10 minutes. After 30 seconds, repeat the steps if a 10-minute time extension is desired. Remote start can be extended only once. Canceling a Remote Start To cancel a remote start, do one of the following: . Aim the RKE transmitter at the vehicle and press and hold / until the parking lamps turn off. To lock the doors from inside the vehicle: . Press Q on the central locking switch or on the driver door switch. . Press the lock knob on the driver door to lock all doors and, if equipped, the liftgate. To unlock the doors from inside the vehicle: . Pull the door handle. Pulling the door handle again unlatches the door. Lift the lock knob on the driver door to unlock the driver door. See Door Locks on page 2-6. See Central Locking System on page 2-7. Liftgate To lock or unlock the liftgate from the inside, press Q or K on the central locking switch or on the driver door switch. The vehicle must be in P (Park) for automatic transmissions. For manual transmissions the parking brake must be engaged. To open the trunk from inside the vehicle press V. To open the liftgate from the outside, press K twice on the RKE transmitter to unlock all doors, then use the touch pad. See Liftgate (Hatchback) on page 2-11. Trunk Release To lock or unlock the trunk from the inside, press Q or K on the central locking switch or on the driver door switch. To open the trunk from outside of the vehicle: . Press K on the RKE transmitter to unlock all doors, then use the touch pad. . Press and hold Y on the RKE transmitter. See Trunk (Sedan) on page 2-9 and Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Operation on page 2-3. Windows Manual Windows If equipped, use the window crank to open and close each window. See Manual Windows on page 2-16. Power Windows Seat Adjustment Manual Seats In Brief 1-7 If equipped, press the switch down to open the window. Pull the front of the switch up to close it. The switches work when the vehicle is in ON/RUN or ACC/ ACCESSORY, or when Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is active. See Retained Accessory Power (RAP) on page 9-17. See Power Windows on page 2-16. To adjust a manual seat: 1. Pull the handle at the front of the seat. 2. Slide the seat to the desired position and release the handle. 3. Try to move the seat back and forth to be sure it is locked in place. See Seat Adjustment on page 3-3. See Seat Adjustment on page 3-3. To recline a manual seatback: 1. Lift the lever. If necessary, move the safety belt out of the way to access the lever. 2. Move the seatback to the desired position, and then release the lever to lock the seatback in place. 3. Push and pull on the seatback to make sure it is locked in place. To return the seatback to the upright position: 1. Lift the lever fully without applying pressure to the seatback, and the seatback will return to the upright position. 2. Push and pull on the seatback to make sure it is locked. See Reclining Seatbacks on page 3-4. Second Row Seats The rear seatbacks can be folded down to increase cargo space. See Rear Seats on page 3-7. Head Restraint Adjustment Do not drive until the head restraints for all occupants are installed and adjusted properly. How to Wear Safety Belts Properly on page 3-10. Canada The passenger sensing system turns off the front outboard passenger frontal airbag and knee airbag under certain conditions. No other airbag is affected by the Chevrolet Sonic Owner Manual (GMNA-Localizing-U.S./Canada-7707487) - 2015 - crc - 5/28/14 Black plate (10,1) Interior Mirror Hold the inside rearview mirror in the center to move it for a clearer view behind your vehicle. Adjust the mirror to avoid glare from the headlamps behind you. Push the tab forward for daytime use and pull it for nighttime use. See Manual Rearview Mirror on page 2-16. Steering Wheel Adjustment To adjust the steering wheel: 1. Pull the lever down. 2. Move the steering wheel up, down, forward, and backward. 3. Pull the lever up to lock the steering wheel in place. Do not adjust the steering wheel while driving. Interior Lighting Dome Lamps 1-10 In Brief Move the control up, down, or side to side to adjust the mirror. See Manual Mirrors on page 2-15. Power Outside Mirrors For vehicles with power outside mirrors: 1. Select the mirror by moving the selector switch to L for the driver side or R for the passenger side. 2. Use the control knob to move the mirror in the desired direction. See Power Mirrors on page 2-15. Exterior Lighting The dome lamp controls are in the headliner above the rear seats. 9 : Press to turn the lamps off, even when a door is open. H : When the button is returned to the middle position, the lamps turn on automatically when a door is opened. R : Press to turn on the dome lamps. Reading Lamps For vehicles with front reading lamps, they are in the overhead console. # or $ : Press to turn each lamp on or off. The exterior lamp control is on the instrument panel to the outboard side of the steering column. O : Briefly turn to this position to turn the automatic light control off or on again. AUTO: Turns the headlamps on automatically at normal brightness, together with the following: . Parking Lamps In Brief 1-11 Taillamps License Plate Lamps Instrument Panel Lights . Sidemarker Lamps ; : Turns on the parking lamps including all lamps except the headlamps. 5 : Turns the headlamps on together with the parking lamps and instrument panel lights. A warning chime sounds if the driver door is opened when the ignition switch is off and the headlamps are on. # : For vehicles with fog lamps, press to turn the lamps on or off. See: . Move the lever to one of the following positions: HI: Use for fast wipes. LO: Use for slow wipes. Hatchback Shown, Sedan Similar INT: Move the lever up to INT for intermittent wipes, then turn the x INT band up for more frequent wipes or down for less frequent wipes. OFF: Use to turn the wipers off. 8 : For a single wipe, briefly move the wiper lever down. For several wipes, hold the wiper lever down. n L : Pull the windshield wiper lever toward you to spray windshield washer fluid and activate the wipers. See Windshield Wiper/Washer on page 5-3. For vehicles with a rear window wiper/washer, see Rear Window Wiper/Washer on page 5-4. Manual Transmission Up-Shift Light Vehicles equipped with a manual transmission may have an up-shift light. This light indicates when to shift to the next higher gear for better fuel economy. For the best fuel economy, accelerate slowly and shift when the light comes on, if weather, road, and traffic conditions allow. Ignore the light during downshifts. Reverse Lockout The manual transmission is equipped with a reverse lockout ring. To shift into R (Reverse), press down the clutch pedal, lift up the ring on the shift lever, and shift into R (Reverse). Let up on the clutch pedal slowly while pressing the accelerator pedal. Portable Audio Devices Some vehicles have a 3.5 mm (1/8 in) auxiliary input and a USB port in the storage area to the right of the infotainment system. A second AUX input is on the front of the infotainment system, if equipped. External devices such as iPods®, laptop computers, MP3 players, CD changers, and USB storage devices may be connected, depending on the audio system. See Auxiliary Devices on page 7-24. Bluetooth® The Bluetooth® system allows users with a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to make and receive hands-free calls using the vehicle audio system and controls. The Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone must be paired with the in-vehicle Bluetooth system before it can be used in the vehicle. Not all phones will support all functions. See Bluetooth (Voice Recognition) on page 7-37 or Bluetooth (Infotainment Controls) on page 7-28 or Bluetooth (Overview) on page 7-26 and Hands-Free Phone on page 7-42. Steering Wheel Controls Some audio steering wheel controls could differ depending on the vehicle's options. Some audio steering wheel controls can be adjusted at the steering wheel. Driver Information Center (DIC) The DIC display is in the instrument cluster. It shows the status of many vehicle systems. The controls for the DIC are on the turn signal lever. Forward Collision Alert (FCA) System If equipped, FCA may help avoid or reduce the harm caused by front-end crashes. FCA provides a green indicator, V, when a vehicle is detected ahead. When approaching a vehicle ahead too quickly, FCA provides a red flashing alert and rapidly beeps. This alert stays lit if you follow a vehicle much too closely. See Forward Collision Alert (FCA) System on page 9-32. Lane Departure Warning (LDW) If equipped, LDW may help avoid unintentional lane departures at speeds of 56 km/h (35 mph) or greater. LDW uses a camera sensor to detect the lane markings. The LDW light, @, is green if a lane marking is detected. If the vehicle departs the lane, the light will change to amber and flash. In addition, beeps will sound. See Lane Departure Warning (LDW) on page 9-36. Rear Vision Camera (RVC) If equipped, RVC displays a view of the area behind the vehicle, on the center stack display, when the vehicle is shifted into R (Reverse). See Rear Vision Camera (RVC) on page 9-34. Power Outlets The accessory power outlets can be used to plug in electrical equipment, such as a cell phone or MP3 player. The vehicle has an accessory power outlet in front of the cupholders on the center floor console. See Power Outlets on page 5-6. To close the sunroof, press and hold the front of the switch. Vent: Press and hold the front of the switch to vent the sunroof. Manually close the sunshade. The sunroof will not operate if the vehicle has an electrical failure. See Sunroof on page 2-18. On vehicles with this feature, the sunroof only operates when the ignition is turned to ON/RUN or Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is active. In Brief 1-19 Performance and Maintenance Traction Control/ Electronic Stability Control The Traction Control System (TCS) limits wheel spin. The system is on when the vehicle is started. The StabiliTrak system assists with directional control of the vehicle in difficult driving conditions. The system is on when the vehicle is started. To turn off traction control, press and release the TCS/StabiliTrak button g on the center console. The traction off light i illuminates. . Press and release the TCS/ StabiliTrak button g again to turn traction control back on. Tire Pressure Monitor This vehicle may have a Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS). The low tire pressure warning light alerts to a significant loss in pressure of one of the vehicle's tires. If the warning light comes on, stop as soon as possible and inflate the tires to the recommended pressure shown on the Tire and Loading Information label. See Vehicle Load Limits on page 9-9. The warning light will remain on until the tire pressure is corrected. The low tire pressure warning light may come on in cool weather when the vehicle is first started, and then turn off as the vehicle is driven. This may be an early indicator that the tire pressures are getting low and the tires need to be inflated to the proper pressure. The TPMS does not replace normal monthly tire maintenance. Maintain the correct tire pressures. See Tire Pressure Monitor System on page 10-48. Engine Oil Life System The engine oil life system calculates engine oil life based on vehicle use and displays the : % CHANGE message on the DIC when it is necessary to change the engine oil and filter. Remember, the oil life display must be reset after each oil change. It will not reset itself. Resetting the Oil Life System 1. Press the MENU button to show Remaining Oil Life on the display. This display shows an estimate of the oil’s remaining useful life. If 99% is displayed, that means that 99% of the current oil life remains. 2. To reset the engine oil life system, press the SET/CLR button while the oil life display is active. After a few seconds, there will be a single chime and the oil life will be reset to 100%. Be careful not to reset the oil life display accidentally at any time other than when the oil has just been changed. It cannot be reset accurately until the next oil change. If there is a decrease in the RKE operating range: . Check the distance. The transmitter may be too far from the vehicle. . Check the location. Other vehicles or objects may be blocking the signal. . Check the transmitter's battery. See “Battery Replacement” later in this section. If the transmitter is still not working correctly, see your dealer or a qualified technician for service. The key that is part of the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter can be used for the ignition and all locks. Press the button on the RKE transmitter to extend the key. Press the button and the key blade to retract the key. See your dealer if a new key is needed. If the vehicle has an ignition, and it becomes difficult to turn they key, inspect the key blade for debris. If you are locked out of the vehicle, see Roadside Assistance Program on page 13-5. Other conditions can affect the performance of the transmitter. See Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System on page 2-2. With Remote Start Shown The following buttons are on the transmitter: Q (Lock): Press to lock all doors. The turn signal indicators may flash and/or the horn may sound to Keys, Doors, and Windows 2-3 indicate locking. See “Remote Locking, Unlocking, Starting” under Vehicle Personalization on page 5-29. If the driver door is open when Q is pressed, all doors lock except the driver door, if Unlocked Door Anti Lock Out is enabled through the vehicle personalization. See “Unlocked Door Anti Lock Out” under Vehicle Personalization on page 5-29. If the passenger door is open when Q is pressed, all doors lock. Pressing Q may also arm the theft-deterrent system. See Vehicle Alarm System on page 2-12. K (Unlock): Press to unlock the driver door or all doors. See “Remote Locking, Unlocking, Starting” under Vehicle Personalization on page 5-29. The turn signal indicators flash to indicate unlocking has occurred. For more information see “Remote Unlock Feedback” under Vehicle Personalization on page 5-29. Pressing K may also disarm the theft-deterrent system. See Vehicle Alarm System on page 2-12. Y (Remote Trunk Release): If equipped, press and hold to release the trunk. 7 (Vehicle Locator/Panic Alarm): Press and release one time to initiate vehicle locator. The exterior lamps flash and the horn chirps three times. Press and hold 7 for at least three seconds to sound the panic alarm. The horn sounds and the turn signals flash for 30 seconds until 7 is pressed again, or the key is placed in the ignition and turned to ON/RUN. / (Remote Vehicle Start): If equipped, press and release Q and then immediately press and hold / for at least four seconds or until the turn signal lamps flash to start the engine from outside the Chevrolet Sonic Owner Manual (GMNA-Localizing-U.S./Canada-7707487) - 2015 - crc - 5/28/14 Black plate (4,1) 2-4 Keys, Doors, and Windows vehicle using the RKE transmitter. See Remote Vehicle Start on page 2-5. The buttons on the RKE transmitter are disabled when there is a key in the ignition. Programming Transmitters to the Vehicle Only RKE transmitters programmed to this vehicle will work. If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can be purchased and programmed through your dealer. When the replacement transmitter is programmed to this vehicle, all remaining transmitters must also be reprogrammed. Any lost or stolen transmitters will no longer work once the new transmitter is programmed. See your dealer to have new transmitters programmed. Programming with a Recognized Transmitter To program a new key: 1. Insert the original, already programmed key in the ignition and turn to the key to the ON/ RUN position. 2. Turn the key to LOCK/OFF, and 3. remove the key. Insert the new key to be programmed and turn it to the ON/RUN position within five seconds. The security light will turn off once the key has been programmed. 4. Repeat Steps 1–3 if additional keys are to be programmed. If a key is lost or damaged, see your dealer to have a new key made. Programming without a Recognized Transmitter Program a new key to the vehicle when a recognized key is not available. Canadian regulations require that owners see their dealer. If there are no currently recognized keys available, follow this procedure to program the first key. This procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete for the first key. The vehicle must be off and all of the keys you wish to program must be with you. 1. Insert the new vehicle key into the ignition. 2. Turn to ON/RUN. The security light will come on. 3. Wait 10 minutes until the security light turns off. 4. Turn the ignition to LOCK/OFF. After the third time, turn to ON/RUN; the key is learned and all previously known keys will no longer work with the vehicle. Remaining keys can be learned by following the procedure in “Programming with a Recognized Transmitter.” Battery Replacement The battery is not rechargeable. To replace the battery: { Caution When replacing the battery, do not touch any of the circuitry on the transmitter. Static from your body could damage the transmitter. 1. Press the button on the transmitter to extend the key. 2. Remove the battery cover by prying with a finger. 3. Remove the old battery. 4. Insert the new battery, positive side facing up. Replace with a CR2032 or equivalent battery. 5. Snap the battery cover back on to the transmitter. Remote Vehicle Start If equipped, this feature allows the engine to be started from outside the vehicle. / (Remote Vehicle Start): This button will be on the RKE transmitter if the vehicle has remote start. The climate control system will use the previous settings during a remote start. The rear defog may come on during remote start based on cold ambient conditions. The rear fog indicator light does not come on during remote start. If the vehicle has heated seats, they may come on during a remote start. See Heated Front Seats on page 3-5. Laws in some local communities may restrict the use of remote starters. For example, some laws require a person using remote start to have the vehicle in view. Check local regulations for any requirements. Other conditions can affect the performance of the transmitter. See Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System on page 2-2. Starting the Vehicle To start the engine using the remote start feature: 1. Aim the RKE transmitter at the vehicle. 2. Press and release Q. 3. Immediately after completing Step 2, press and hold / for at least four seconds or until the turn signal lamps flash. The turn signal lamps flashing confirms the request to remote start the vehicle has been received. Chevrolet Sonic Owner Manual (GMNA-Localizing-U.S./Canada-7707487) - 2015 - crc - 5/28/14 Black plate (6,1) 2-6 Keys, Doors, and Windows When the engine starts, the parking lamps will turn on and remain on as long as the engine is running. The doors will be locked and the climate control system may come on. The engine will continue to run for 10 minutes. After 30 seconds, repeat the steps if a 10-minute extension is desired. Remote start can be extended only once. Insert the key and turn it to ON/RUN before driving. Extending Engine Run Time The engine run time can also be extended by another 10 minutes, if during the first 10 minutes Steps 1–3 are repeated while the engine is still running. An extension can be requested, 30 seconds after starting. This provides a total of 20 minutes. When the remote start is extended, the second 10-minute period is added on to the first 10 minutes for a total of 20 minutes. A maximum of two remote starts, or a single start with an extension, are allowed between ignition cycles. After this, the vehicle's ignition switch must be turned to ON/RUN and then back to LOCK/OFF using the key, before the remote start procedure can be used again. Canceling a Remote Start To cancel a remote start, do one of the following: . Aim the RKE transmitter at the vehicle and press and hold / until the parking lamps turn off. Turn on the hazard warning flashers. Turn the vehicle on and then off. Conditions in Which Remote Start Will Not Work The remote vehicle start feature will not operate if: The key is in the ignition. The hood is not closed. The hazard warning flashers are on. The malfunction indicator lamp is on. The engine coolant temperature is too high. The oil pressure is low. Two remote vehicle starts, or a single remote start with an extension, have already been used. The vehicle is not in P (Park). Door Locks { Warning Unlocked doors can be dangerous. . Passengers, especially children, can easily open the doors and fall out of a moving vehicle. Use the key in the driver door to lock all doors or unlock the driver door only. . Press Q or K on the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter. See Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Operation on page 2-3. Warning (Continued) open it. The chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash is increased if the doors are not locked. So, all passengers should wear safety belts properly and the doors should be locked whenever the vehicle is driven. . Young children who get into unlocked vehicles may be unable to get out. A child can be overcome by extreme heat and can suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Always lock the vehicle whenever leaving it. . Outsiders can easily enter through an unlocked door when you slow down or stop the vehicle. Locking the doors can help prevent this from happening. To lock the doors from inside the vehicle: . Press Q on the central locking switch or on the driver door switch. . Press the lock knob on the driver door to lock all doors and, if equipped, the liftgate. To unlock the doors from inside the vehicle: . Press K on the central locking switch or on the driver door switch. . Pull the door handle. Pulling the door handle again unlatches the door. Lift the lock knob on the driver door to unlock the driver door. Central Locking System This system allows for the doors and liftgate/trunk to be locked and unlocked from the RKE transmitter or the central locking switch on the center stack. See Vehicle Personalization on page 5-29. Delayed Locking This feature delays the actual locking of the doors until five seconds after all doors are closed. Delayed locking can only be turned on when the Unlocked Door Anti Lockout feature has been turned off. When Q is pressed on the driver or passenger door power lock switch while the door is open, a chime will sound three times to indicate that delayed locking is active. The doors will then lock automatically five seconds after all doors are closed. If a door is reopened before five seconds have elapsed, the five second timer will reset once all the doors are closed again. Press Q on the door lock switch again, or press Q on the RKE transmitter, to override this feature and lock the doors immediately. Delayed locking can be programmed through the Driver Information Center (DIC). See Vehicle Personalization on page 5-29. Automatic Door Locks The vehicle is programmed so that when the doors are closed, the ignition is on, and the shift lever is moved out of P (Park) for automatic transmissions, or when the vehicle speed is above 13 km/h (8 mph) for manual transmissions, the doors and the trunk/liftgate will lock. To unlock the doors and the trunk/ liftgate press K on the center stack or the driver door switch. If equipped with an automatic transmission the vehicle must be in P (Park). If equipped with a manual transmission the vehicle must be in Neutral with the parking brake set. This feature can be programmed. See Vehicle Personalization on page 5-29. Lockout Protection If the driver side power door lock switch is pressed when the driver door is open and the key is in the ignition, all of the doors will lock and then the driver door will unlock. Lockout Protection can be manually overridden with the driver door open by pressing and holding Q on the power door lock switch. If Unlocked Door Anti Lockout is turned on and: the vehicle is off, the driver door is open, and door locking is requested using a door lock switch or the RKE transmitter, all the doors will lock and only the driver door will unlock.
