Righto seeing as we seem to chat a fair bit in and out of the threads, here's a chat/spam thread where you can go for your lives.

That and during the day when works slow, it's handy to just chat about inane shit as well, doesn't have to only relate to Old School stuff.

:)

So............................... GO!

Monaros off at MotaCarb getting the carby redone, bye bye flat spot down low, carby main body was installed back to front to start with.

Once back (hoping) to get the fabricated covers on, reroute the fuel line to behind the boost and install the new fuel log/guage.

Then, off she goes to get the single headlight front painted and installed when I can find decent grille/headlight surrounds and hopefully the fiberglass 4" reverse cowl scooped bonnet.

Have to look into a fuel cell as well as my modified tank is leaking when full :(

Yeah, I meant that by getting off my ass and coming to see you lol.

Unsure if I am going to Monaro Nats, little concerned about the car, although we (club) have booked entire motel out and have permission to block entrances with the trucks/trailers.

Entries are now closed as well....

Change the thread title to the "Shootin' the Breeze"! :( That used to be the name of Chic Henrys column in the old school Street Machine magazine where he would just waffle on about any old idle chit-chat in the scene.
And the best part about the old school scene is sitting around talking shit and reminiscing!

Anyways whos thinking of checking out the State of Origin Wild Bunch at the nostalgia drags in 2 weeks time. Few of the old blown sedan heroes from the 80s and early 90s will be fired up in anger once again!

And Lismore Swap Meet is on Sunday 22nd August for anyone chasing parts.......

Good stuff. If you come down for the swap give me a yell.... we fly out to Sydney for a week on that arvo with the old man to Westmead for brain surgey prep tests and shit, but ill cook up a BBQ full of bacon and eggs for a post swap meet scrounge breakfast if you're keen!

Ive spoken to my brother about 'storing' a Torana on QLD club rego at his place too and it might be a go-er, will have to join the Old Skool club in a few weeks after getting a few things sorted and set the wheels in motion! Would be good to get it out and do a few runs with them, especially if they come south!

Join 3 months in advance and you won't have to pay the $150 fee for the rego letter man.

Unsure on South runs as most of the machines are loosely defined drag cars lol

Hey has anyone ever seen a Hk/t/g with shaved doors or done it ?? I have no idea how the fuck too do it, because where the door handle bolts too the door its raised up about a cm or so.... Should i just cut it out entirely and plate it ?? Or grind it down and then plate it ??

Its kind of hard too tell what i mean so heres a couple of photos.

^^^ I'd say cut it and plate it, but thats my answer to everything.

You will need to cut it and plate it, buddy! At least you will be able to use the bit you cut out, as a template.
.
.
So I just added another car to my stable, to use as a daily driver. So on top of the 72 Galaxie, the 83 Fairmont, and my pair of Twin Cam Excels (for the series) i now have a 98 VT commodore as a short term project (why cant i just buy a working car, the missus says). But hey, its $700, in great interior nick and has brand new tyres and brakes, needs a door painted, and an engine... So ive got some paint, and a $300 working ecotec. Should be sweet! Good cut and polish and ill be rolling in commonwhore style.
.
Still trying hard to sell this bloody XE. I just dont need the thing, i need the cash to finish this galaxie!

As WBTonner said, cut it out and weld in new steel to fill the gap.

You can buy push button kits for older cars that weld into the door, so just weld a new piece in and the button where its needed and your done.

Re-read your post. If you "grind it down" to the level of the rest of the door skin, there won't be anything left there. Needs to be cut. Its a super easy job though, few hours and you'll have them all done in no time.

As for my contribution to the thread, has anyone else here had the displeasure of welding inner sills into a body before? My old man did the outer and inner sills on my EK about two years ago while i was working as an apprentice and it kept him busy since hes retired. Anyway, since the car was about 200mm off the ground he never ended up welding the inner sills and so they were just all tacked in, so i've got my EK up on tressles and having to weld meters and meters of outer sills to inner sills, as well as the inners to the floorpan. What a motherfucker of a job. I will post a picture of the EK on the tressles here soon.

Hey Nick, just an idea a had the other day while looking at a HQ complete glass front, would it be possible to join bonnet, guards, nose cone etc and have a "solid" front end so i can have it tilt? And the police hate fibreglass for some reason :(
Just a crazy idea I thought of at Tafe while trying to stay awake.....

Haha thats the funniest car photo i have ever seen... but sums up quite accurately how frustrating some projects can be.
Hahaha... cracked me up.

A one piece front is indeed possible. I don't know about glass though, but you could weld the nosecone, gaurds, bonnet and splash apron together and then fabricate a tilt front for it. I will find some pics of one a guy on the HAMB did on a 55 Chevy. I'll take about 10ish to find it though.

I'm going to do something similar on the EK, the front gaurds and splash apron will be welded together. Bonnet will be seperate and operate as per factory though.

Bobby,

Yeah mate. The thing is a pain in the ass but once i get the sills finished up this week hopefully i'll be on a roll again making REAL progress.

Frustrating doesn't even come close on this car. I've owned it 2.5 years and its still fighting me every step of the way.

put the door popper as a button in the hole on the left hand side

I'll make a seperate thread for you Tonner. I'm hopeless, i can't remember what your name was haha.

I was thinking of having the lower apron just bolted on incase I scrub on anything as I wouldn't want it to have the ripple effect and damage something else further up.
Nathan, I only know yours because its in your sig haha.

Nathan,

Sounds good mate. Check out the thread i just posted to give you an idea. I don't know if tilt fronts are legal here on a streeter or not, i've never been interested in glass fronts or tilt fronts so never looked into it.

76LX,

Putting it in the left hole would not work. Earlier model cars with a push button style handle have a flat plate inside the door which when the button is pressed, a rod attached to the back of the button pushes into the plate, and pushes that which opens the door. The left hole is simply to hold the front of the handle.

You can buy a door popper kit for cars with that type of handle (earlier Holdens as well as many American cars) or you could make your own using a piece of pipe, a fabricated button with a rod welded to the back of it, with a tab and a hole on the rod, and also inside the pipe with a spring between the two so that when the button is released it will be pulled back to a flush position.

Tricky to make from scratch, but not all that difficult.

Very jealous.

if you have to fill it mate, then prep will be your friend clean it really well, wire brush, rust convertor, weld doesnt stick to copper so if you come accross some copper plate it s very handy put it behind the repair area weld over grind untill preped, putty, sand putty, sand, prime, paint.

DeadSled
Post #25

Agreed with above. That door needs to be COMPLETELY bare metal in the area that will be getting welded.

Man, all i think about at work is stuff i'm going to be doing to the EK as far as custom stuff, how i'm going to go about doing things, cruising the car, ect ect.

Old cars have taken over my life forever. I'm fucked now haha.

Haha, gotta love the tricky jobs!

Makes you wonder, do you reckon these blokes in their new school cars have the same passion for it than the old school blokes have? I mean, sure they might love their cars, but are they truly passionate about them! I dont think they are - but i suppose its hard to get passionate about a factory made plastic piece of shit with no heart or soul.

Might start a passion thread in General - tell the kids they just havent got it! - bring on WW3! :P

Agree'd completely Damo. Theres just something about a car thats 35ish - 80 years old that just screams style, thought, passion ect.

You can't feel the same love with a new car.

Ben,

You are right. The Roadster will be considerably easier to do than the EK. I just wanted this done first and i'm still collecting parts for the roadster. Aside from a steering box / column mount, pedals and shock mounts, the roadster is pretty much factory original minus the fenders and juice brakes.

No way mate, i dont understand how young blokes can get attached too newer cars. They just lack style i mean seriously, what in the world is attractive about a vs/r commodore. Sure there a great family car, but thats all they are.
Imo, the only way you get that passion is if you spend countless hours working on them and looking at them and talking too them haha.

That thread sounds good by the way.

Yep. But you look at the enthusiasts of different old school cars. We like to learn the history about our cars and really like to gather as much info as possible. Your average Torana nut can tell you about all the different models and options that came with the models, all about the racing heritage, basics on how to put this and that together, etc, etc. Same with your eraly Falcon nuts.... any old school enthusiast is usually full of good info and knowledge about the type of cars they like.

Go ask most new- schoolers the same things, and theres a big chance they wouldnt have a fucking clue!

Damo,

Once again, completely agree mate. Being that i'm into cars from the 30s - early 60s mainly (i do appreciate 70s, and i LOVE my Kingswood to death..) i not only know about the cars i own, but i know a huge amount about anything Ford from the 30s - 60s, as well as a lot about 40s and 50s Chevys. Not so much about Mopar stuff, although i do know a fair bit still about them as far as the engine and gearboxes are concerned (Great for Hot Rods :P).

I also know more about a Flathead V8 and a four banger flathead than even some old guys i've met.. as well as a lot of the history stuff such as various customisers and painters from the 50s and 60s (Larry Watson, Gene Winfield, The Barris and Ayala brothers, Bill Hines ect) and i know a LOT about different ways of customising a car, what things are specific to different eras, how to actually go about doing custom stuff to a Hot Rod or a Sled and i'd like to think i have a very good idea on what is traditional, period correct and "timeless" which a lot of people seem to have forgotten these days.
