T28BB Turbo Upgrade for CA18DET

[ Home ]

These are some pics from the t25 to t28bb turbo conversion on my ca18det silvia:

Firstly I got the heat shield and intake pipes off and out of the way.. that mark on the manifold is from the palm of my hand.. my hands weren't too clean at all :-)

Unlike many others, I take the turbo off without undoing the manifold.. I use a 12mm (I think that's what size it was) spanner to get to all four nuts holding turbo to manifold.. the last one is a bit tricky, but can be done.. I suggest doing it first (the one closest to the engine which is hard to get to).. because once you get a couple turns out of it, you should be able to spin it off with your finger..

Here's a pic comparing the two turbo's..

The intake side of the t28bb didn't have a pipe to connect to.. so I had that flange made by an exhaust shop to connect to it, total cost was $15 I think.. the other tricky thing is that the exhaust/dump pipe bolts on the t28bb, one of them is about 2mm to one side compared to the t25.. I know of people who have stock dump pipe's and this caused a major drama, having to drill the hole a bit bigger in the dump pipe to get it all to line up.. in my case I was lucky, because my dump pipe is custom and lined up beautifully...

There was two more tricky things.. (other than the obvious mucking around with water and oil lines to the turbo, which are all find just hard to line up).. the intake pipe's needed a bit of hacksaw cutting action to get them to fit.. from airbox to turbo was a bit of a bitch, cut a bit off to make it fit all a-ok.. on the compressor side of the turbo.. (turbo to intercooler).. the pipe that bolts onto the turbo came up at like a 30 degree angle off the t28, as opposed to a 80-90 degree (straight up) angle from the t25.. so I had to shorten the pipes here too..

Also, if you get this turbo, try and make sure you get the oil return line with it.. if you don't, then you will find that the Oil-Return line from the t25 doesn't fit.. and needs its bolt holes drilled out quite a bit to fit..

Once the turbo was in.. and the heat shield back on.. you wouldn't know there was a different/bigger turbo there..

Problems experienced prior to installation, was pipes blowing off.. basically I got a shifter and burred out the edges of the metal pipes to cause a serious join with the rubber.. kinda hard to explain.. think about it a bit.. sorry, no photo's.. now that its all holding together I'm not pulling it back apart :-)

I got a bit creative and painted the intake pipes, but I did this prior to doing the t28 installation and they got all greasy.. gotto clean it up.. but the effect is still there..

And here's a pic of my HKS EVC IV (Electronic Boost Controller) under my stereo.. it's damn handy and very effective..
