Brakes Upgrade - CA18DET Brakes to SR20DET Brakes

[ Home ]

Sure, the brake upgrade mightn't be the best upgrade possible.. I could of gotten r32 or r33 skyline brakes, and had the rotors redrilled, and hoped like hell that they would have fitted in my 15" rims.. but cost prohibitive and it would be a total pain in the ass... plus my rims are too small for the r33 rotors.. but I needed to upgrade the brakes.. the brakes that come with the ca18det engine are pretty piss poor, and aren't too great when you start getting more power out of the car.. such as bigger turbo etc..

Like most things.. it wasn't exactly 100% simple swap..

I picked up the SR20DET Rotor's and Callipers for $200, and for the condition of the rotors, it was a damn bargain.. I got the rotors machined for $25 for good measure.. this photo compares one of the new rotors with an old one..

It was a reasonably simple job really.. take the wheel off, unbolt callipers as if you were changing the brake pads, then pull the disc off, then take off the whole calliper assembly and unbolt the brake line.. (clamp the brake line to not loose all your fluid)... this is a photo with the disc and callipers off..

The protective cover plate that you can see there, needed to be bent back out of the way for the new discs because they're quite a bit bigger and won't fit in.. some people have cut it completely off/out.. I did a bunch of splits and bent it outta the way..

Once I got it all together, and could spin the disc without it rubbing on the backing plate.. I did the final test.. to see if the wheel would still fit in! .. it fits.. JUST.. the disc clears the rim fine.. but the callipers miss by only a couple millimetres..
