Exhaust Blues - Melted Catalytic Converter

[ Home ]

I've been trying to source a problem for a while now.. where my car seems to have some form of flow restriction.. after doing the fuel pump and slight improvement, I moved on to the exhaust.. despite the exhaust place previously telling me that my cat looked quite new and fine, we found out that it was melted and rather blocked...

Soo.. I got myself new exhaust piping fitted, new high flow catalytic converter (high flow was $40 more.. so why not?), new straight through muffler and a resonator to help quieten things down a bit..

Turns out this larger and much higher flowing exhaust with the resonator, is damn fine! The exhaust note is nice yet quiet (quieter than the 2.25" system I used to have!) .. and well.. the car is certainly something new to drive considering the cat was blocked! I had boost set on 10 psi.. and it would reach that max psi around 4,500 rpm.. quite high really! .. I've always figured something was wrong.. and have been trying to source it for a while now.. As soon as I left the exhaust shop, I noticed it spike to 15 psi just over 3,000 rpm and backed off immediately in fear of overboosting.. gotto fix that up! :-) .. now the car drives damn beautifully!

Here's a pic of the tip I got, and yes, the car needs a wash!
