When counting the number of tracks you want to rewind, remember to count the current track as well. (cid:4) The use of cellular phone inside or near the vehicle may cause a noise from the speakers of the audio sys- tem which you are listening to. However, this does not indicate a malfunction.

RADIO RECEPTION Usually, a problem with radio reception does not mean there is a problem with your radio—it is just the normal result of conditions outside the vehicle. For example, nearby buildings and terrain can interfere with FM reception. Power lines or telephone wires can interfere with AM signals. And of course, radio signals have a limited range. The farther you are from a station, the weaker its signal will be. conditions change constantly as your vehicle moves.

Here are some common reception prob- lems that probably do not indicate a prob- lem with your radio: FM Fading and drifting stations—Generally, the effective range of FM is about 40 km (25
miles). Once outside this range, you may notice fading and drifting, which increase with the distance from the radio transmit- ter. They are often accompanied by distor- tion. Multi–path—FM reflective, making it possible for two signals to reach your antenna at the same time. If this happens, the signals will cancel each oth- er out, causing a momentary flutter or loss of reception. Static and fluttering—These occur when signals are blocked by buildings, trees, or other large objects. “A/C” button (on some models) To turn on the air conditioning, press the “A/C” button. The “A/C” button indicator will come on. To turn the air conditioning off, press the button again. If the “A/C” button indicator flashes, there is a problem in the air conditioning system and the air conditioning automatically shuts off. If this happens, take your ve- hicle to a Toyota dealer for service.

Operating tips (cid:1) To cool off your Toyota after

it has been parked in the hot sun, drive with the windows open for a few minutes. This vents the hot air, allowing the air conditioning to cool the interior more quickly.

(cid:1) Make sure the air intake grilles in front of the windshield are not blocked (by leaves or snow, for example).

(cid:1) On humid days, do not blow cold air on the windshield. The windshield could fog up because of the difference in air temperature on the inside and outside of the windshield.

(cid:1) Keep the area under the front seats clear to allow air to circulate through- out the vehicle.

(cid:1) On cold days, move the fan speed to “HI” for a minute to help clear the in- take ducts of snow or moisture. This can reduce the amount of fogging on the windows.

(cid:1) When driving on dusty roads, close all windows. If dust thrown up by the ve- hicle is still drawn into the vehicle after closing the windows, it is recommended that the air intake selector be set to FRESH and the fan speed selector to any setting except “OFF”.

If the electrical power source has been disconnected from the clock, the time dis- play will automatically be set to 1:00 (one o’clock).

Power outlets

CIGARETTE LIGHTER To use the cigarette lighter, press it in. When it becomes heated, it automatical- ly pops out ready for use. If the engine is not running, the key must be in the “ACC” position. Do not hold the cigarette lighter pressed in. Use a Toyota genuine cigarette lighter or equivalent for replacement. ASHTRAYS To use the ashtray, pull it out. When finished with your cigarette, thor- oughly extinguish it in the ashtray to pre- vent other cigarette butts from catching fire. After using the ashtray, push it back in completely. To remove the ashtray, press down on the lock spring plate and pull out.

CAUTION

Glove box

Garage door opener box

To use the glove box, do this. To open: Pull the lever. To lock: Insert the master key and turn it clockwise.

The box is designed to store a garage door opener transmitter. Open the cover and remove the Velcro loop.

Remove the paper strip covering the adhe- sive on back side of loop and adhere loop to back side of the transmitter near cen- ter.

—Using the holding belts

Front cup holder

These auxiliary boxes are equipped with a belt to hold the objects. Type C auxiliary box—This belt is de- signed to hold the first–aid kit. To use the belt, do the following. 1. To loosen: Pull the buckle forward. 2. To tighten: Pull on the belt. Make sure the objects are securely held.

The cup holder is designed for holding cups or drink–cans securely. To use the holder, pull its end. The cup holder can be adjustable to the size of the cups or drink–cans by chang- ing the arm position.

Tie–down hooks

To secure your luggage, use the tie–down hooks as shown above. See “Luggage stowage precautions” on page 162 in Section 2 for precautions in loading luggage.

CAUTION

To avoid personal injury, keep the tie– down hooks stored under the carpet when not in use.

To use the luggage cover: 1. Hook the front end of the luggage cover board onto the front protru- sions.

2. Lower the rear side of luggage cover board and hook onto the rear protru- sions.

3. Pull out the cloth portion of the cov- er and attach the front hooks to the head restraint.

NOTICE

Do not fold the seatback forward while the luggage cover is set.

If the luggage cover is left to be removed, place it somewhere other than the passen- ger compartment. This will prevent pas- sengers from injury in the event of a sud- den stop or an accident.

The luggage cover also can be set at the lower position.
