Air conditioning filter—

The air conditioning filter information label is placed inside of the glove box as shown and indicates that a filter has been installed. The air conditioning filter prevents dust from entering the vehicle through the air conditioning vent.

The air conditioning filter is behind the glove box.

—Checking and replacing the air conditioning filter The air conditioning filter may clog af- ter long use. The filter may need to be replaced if the air flow of the air condi- tioning and heater experiences extreme reductions in operating efficiency, or if the windows begin to fog up easily in FRESH mode. To maintain the air conditioning efficiency, inspect and replace the air conditioning filter according to the maintenance sched- ule. In dusty areas or areas with heavy traffic flow, such as inner city or desert areas, early replacement may be required. (For scheduled maintenance information, please refer the “Scheduled Mainte- nance Guide” or “Owner’s Manual Supple- ment”.)

When installing the filter in the filter case, keep the “°UP” mark pointing up.

5. Inspect the filter on the surface. If it is the just moderately dusty, it may be cleaned by blowing compressed air from the reverse surface. Do not wash or oil the filter. If it is dirty, it should be replaced.

INFORMATION

The air filter should be installed prop- erly in position. The use of air condi- tioning with filter removed may cause deteriorated dustproof per- formance and then affect air condi- tioning performance.

Without multi−information display—To se- lect “_C” or “_F”, push the “E/M” button. ranges The displayed from −30_C (−22_F) up to 50_C (122_F). The key must be in the “ON” position. If an abnormality exists in the connection of the outside air temperature sensor, “−−” will appear on the display. If “−−” appears on the display, contact your Toyota dealer. There may be a case that “−−” appears momentarily when the ignition is quickly turned to “ON”. It is normal if it goes out soon.

With multi−information display

To reset the hour: Push the “H” button. To reset the minutes: Push the “M” button. The key must be in the “ACC” or “ON” position. If the electrical power source has been disconnected from the clock, the time dis- play will automatically be set to 1:00 (one o’clock). When lights are turned on, the brightness of the time indi- cator will be reduced.

Multi−information display

The following information is displayed on the clock/outside temperature dis- play when you push the “INFO” button with the ignition switch turned on. Each time you push the “MODE/RESET” button, the display toggles through this information. 1. Instantaneous fuel consumption 2. Average fuel consumption 3. Driving range 4. Average vehicle speed 5. Driving time The displayed values in the multi−informa- tion display indicate general driving condi- tions. Accuracy varies with driving habits and road conditions. Push the “INFO” button once again, the display will return to the clock and outside temperature gauge. When the ignition switch is on, the last previously used mode displayed just be- fore the ignition switch is off will appear.

The instantaneous fuel consumption is calculated and displayed based on dis- tance and fuel consumption for 2 sec- onds with the engine running. The displayed value is updated every 2
seconds. Note that an accurate figure may not be shown in the following cases. D The vehicle is stopped with the engine running. (The display will indicate the extremely high fuel consumption.) is driving down a

The actual driving range varies with driv- ing habits and road conditions. If fuel con- sumption is good, the driving range will be longer than indicated. If fuel consumption is poor, the driving range will be shorter than indicated. If the low fuel level warning light comes on, refuel the vehicle even if the display indicates that the vehicle can be driven further.

4. Average vehicle speed

(“AVG. MPH” or “AVG. KM/h”)

Average vehicle speed is calculated and displayed based on total driving dis- tance and total driving time with the engine running. The displayed value is updated every 10
seconds. To reset the calculations, push and hold the “MODE/RESET” button for more than 1 second. 5. Driving time

(“E/T”)

The elapsed time after the engine starts is displayed. When the engine is started, driving time is counted from 0:00. Up to 99:59 (99
hours, 59 minutes) can be displayed. When the driving time exceeds 99:59, the counter returns to 0:00. To reset the calculations, push and hold the “MODE/RESET” button for more than 1 second.

CALIBRATING THE COMPASS (deviation calibration) the compass The direction display on deviates true direction deter- mined by the earth’s magnetic field. The angle of deviation varies according to the geographic position of the vehicle. To adjust this deviation, stop the vehicle, then push and hold the switch until the zone number appears on the display. Then push the switch, referring to the fol- lowing map to select the number of the zone where the vehicle is.

CALIBRATING THE COMPASS (circling calibration) the Sometimes compass may not change after a turn. To rectify this, stop the vehicle and push and hold the switch until “C” appears on the display. If “C” appears on the display because of a drastic change in the magnetic field, perform circling calibration.

CIGARETTE LIGHTER To use the cigarette lighter, press it in. After it finishes heating up, it automati- cally pops out ready for use. If the engine is not running, the key must be in the “ACC” position to use the light- er. Do not hold the cigarette lighter pressed in. Use a Toyota genuine cigarette lighter or equivalent for replacement. ASHTRAYS Front ashtray—To use the ashtray, push on the lid. Rear ashtray—To use the ashtray, raise the lid. When finished with your cigarette, thor- oughly extinguish it in the ashtray to pre- vent other cigarette butts from catching fire. After using the ashtray, close the lid completely. To remove the ashtray, open the lid and pull it out.

The cup holder is designed for holding cups or drink−cans securely. With lever type parking brake: To use the cup holder, open the lid. With pedal type parking brake: To use the cup holder, push on the lid. To hold the cups or drink−cans securely, adjust the size with the adapter.

To raise the rear sun shade, pull the tab of the shade and hook it on the anchors. To lower the shade, pull the tab slightly to unhook the shade, and lower it slowly.

Use a floor mat of the correct size. If the floor carpet and floor mat have 2
holes, then they are designed for use with locking clips. Fix the floor mat with lock- ing clips into the holes in the floor carpet.

Break−in period Drive gently and avoid high speeds. Your vehicle does not need an elaborate break−in. But following a few simple tips for the first 1600 km (1000 miles) can add to the future economy and long life of your vehicle: D Avoid full

Fuel FUEL TYPE Your new vehicle must use only un- leaded gasoline. To help prevent gas station mix−ups, your Toyota has a smaller fuel tank opening. The special nozzle on pumps with un- leaded fuel will fit it, but the larger stan- dard nozzle on pumps with leaded gas will not. At a minimum, the gasoline you use should meet the specifications of ASTM D4814 in the U.S.A. and CGSB 3.5−M93
in Canada.

NOTICE

Do not use leaded gasoline. Use of leaded gasoline will cause the three− way catalytic converter to lose its ef- fectiveness and the emission control system to function improperly. Also, this can increase maintenance costs.

OCTANE RATING 2.4 L 4−cylinder (2AZ−FE) engine: Se- lect Octane Rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher. 3.0 L V6 (1MZ−FE) and 3.3 L V6 (3MZ− FE) engines: Select Octane Rating 87
(Research Octane Number 91) or higher. For improved vehicle performance, use premium unleaded gasoline with an Oc- tane Rating of 91 (Research Octane Number of 96) or higher. Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating or research octane number lower than stated above will cause persistent heavy knocking. If it is severe, this will lead to engine damage. CLEANER BURNING GASOLINE Cleaner burning gasoline, including re- formulated gasoline that contains oxy- genates such as ethanol or MTBE is available in many areas. Toyota recommends the use of cleaner burning gasoline and appropriately blended reformulated gasoline. These types of gas- oline provide excellent vehicle perfor- mance, reduce vehicle emissions, and im- prove air quality. OXYGENATES IN GASOLINE Toyota allows the use of oxygenate blended gasoline where the oxygenate content is up to 10% ethanol or 15% MTBE. in your Toyota, be sure that it has an octane rating no lower than 87. Toyota does not recommend the use of gasoline containing methanol.

GASOLINE CONTAINING MMT Some gasoline contain an octane en- hancing additive called MMT (Methylcy- clopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl). Toyota does not recommend the use of gasoline that contains MMT. If fuel con- taining MMT is used, your emission con- trol system may be adversely affected. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp on the in- strument cluster may come on. If this hap- pens, contact your Toyota dealer for ser- vice. GASOLINE QUALITY In a very few cases, you may experience driveability problems caused by the partic- ular gasoline that you are using. If you continue to have unacceptable driveability, try changing gasoline brands. If this does not rectify your problem, then consult your Toyota dealer.

GASOLINE CONTAINING DETERGENT ADDITIVES Toyota recommends the use of gasoline that contains detergent additives to avoid build−up of engine deposits. However, all gasoline sold the U.S. contains detergent additives to keep clean and/or clean intake systems. QUALITY GASOLINE Automotive manufacturers in the U.S., Europe and Japan have developed a specification fuel named World−Wide Fuel Charter (WWFC) that is expected to be applied world wide. The WWFC consists of four categories that depend on required emisvels. In the U.S., category 4 has been adopted. z If the engine becomes difficult to start or stalls frequently, take your vehicle in for a check−up as soon as possible. Remember, your Toyota dealer knows your vehicle and its three−way catalytic converter sys- tem best.

z To ensure that the three−way cata- lytic converter and the entire emis- sion control system operate proper- ly, your vehicle must receive the periodic inspections required by the Toyota Maintenance Schedule. Engine exhaust cautions

CAUTION

D Avoid inhaling the engine exhaust. It contains carbon monoxide, which is a colorless and odorless gas. It can cause unconsciousness or even death.

D Make sure the exhaust system has no holes or loose connections. The system should be checked from time to time. If you hit something, or notice a change in the sound of the the system exhaust, have checked immediately.

D Do not run the engine in a garage or enclosed area except the time needed to drive the vehicle in or out. The exhaust gases cannot escape, making this a particularly dangerous situation.

D Do not remain for a long time in a parked vehicle with the engine run- ning. If it is unavoidable, however, do so only in an unconfined area and adjust the heating or cooling system to force outside air into the vehicle.

If you can smell exhaust fumes even though there are no other vehicles in the surrounding area, have your vehicle checked by your Toyota dealer. Continued inhalation of ex- haust fumes can lead to death by gas poisoning.

Facts about engine oil consumption FUNCTIONS OF ENGINE OIL Engine oil has the primary functions of lubricating and cooling the inside of the engine, and plays a major role in main- taining the engine in proper working order. ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION It is normal that an engine should con- sume some engine oil during normal engine operation. The causes of oil consumption in a normal engine are as follows. D Oil is used to lubricate pistons, piston rings and cylinders. A thin film of oil is left on the cylinder wall when a pis- ton moves downwards in the cylinder. High negative pressure generated when the vehicle is decelerating sucks some of this oil into the combustion chamber. This oil as well as some part of the oil film left on the cylinder wall is burned by temperature combustion gases during the combustion process.

When judging the amount of oil con- sumption, note that the oil may become diluted and make it difficult to judge the true level accurately. As an example, if a vehicle is used for repeated short trips, and consumes a nor- mal amount of oil, the dipstick may not show any drop in the oil level at all, even after 1000 km (600 miles) or more. This is because the oil is gradually becoming diluted with fuel or moisture, making it appear that the oil level has not changed. The diluting ingredients evaporate out when the vehicle is then driven at high speeds, as on an express way, making it appear that oil is excessively consumed after driving at high speeds.

IMPORTANCE OF ENGINE OIL LEVEL CHECK One of the most important points in prop- er vehicle maintenance is to keep the en- gine oil at the optimum level so that oil function will not be impaired. Therefore, it is essential that the oil level be checked regularly. Toyota recommends that the oil level be checked every time you refuel the vehicle.

Failure to check the oil level regularly could lead to serious engine trouble due to insufficient oil.

Brake system The tandem master cylinder brake system is a hydraulic system with two separate sub−systems. If either sub−system should fail, the other will still work. However, the pedal will be harder to press, and your stopping distance will increase. Also, the brake system warning light may come on.

Depressing the brake pedal on slippery road surfaces such as on a manhole cov- er, a steel plate at a construction site, joints in a bridge, etc. on a rainy day tends to activate the anti−lock brake sys- tem. You may hear a click or motor sound in the engine compartment for a few seconds when the engine is started or just after the vehicle begins to move. This means that the anti−lock brake system is in the self−check mode, and does not indicate a malfunction. When the anti−lock brake system is ac- tivated, the following conditions may occur. Brake pad wear limit indicators

Your Toyota’s identification— —Vehicle identification number

The brake pad wear limit indicators on your disc brakes give a warning noise when the brake pads are worn to where replacement is required. If you hear a squealing or scraping noise the brake pads while driving, have checked and replaced by your Toyota dealer as soon as possible. Expensive ro- tor damage can result if the pads are not replaced when necessary.

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is the legal identifier for your vehicle. This number is on the left top of the instrument panel, and can be seen through the windshield from outside. This is the primary identification number for your Toyota. It is used in registering the ownership of your vehicle.

Theft prevention labels Your new vehicle carries theft preven- tion labels which are approximately 47
mm (1.85 in.) by 12 mm (0.47 in.). The purpose of these labels is to reduce the incidence of vehicle thefts by facilitat- ing the tracing and recovery of parts from stolen vehicles. The label is designed so that once it is applied to a surface, any attempt to remove it will result in destroy- ing the integrity of the label. Transferring these labels intact from one part to anoth- er, will be impossible.
