WARNING

. To prevent dangerous exhaust gas from entering the vehicle, always keep the trunk lid closed while driving.

. Help prevent young children from locking themselves in the trunk. When leaving the vehicle, either close all windows and lock all doors or cancel the inside trunk lid release. Also make certain that the trunk is closed. On hot or sunny days, the tem- perature in the trunk could quickly become high enough to cause death or serious heat- related injuries including brain damage to anyone locked inside, particularly for small children.

. Load the trunk so that cargo can not strike the release handle. If the cargo hits the handle while the vehicle is being driven, the handle may be pulled up and the trunk lid may open. That may cause cargo to fall out of the trunk, which could create a traffic safety hazard.

! Inspection Perform the following steps at least twice a year to check the release handle for correct operation.

2. Use a screwdriver with a thin blade. Slide the screwdriver blade from the slit aperture of the lock assembly fully to the end until you hear a click.

3. Move the release handle, from outside the vehicle, in the direction of the arrow to check if the latch is released.

If the latch is not released, contact your SUBARU dealer. In that case, use the key to release the latch, then close the trunk lid. Also, the release handle feels restricted or not entirely smooth during operation, or the handle and/or handle base is cracked, contact your SUBARU dealer.

To close the rear gate, lower it slowly and push down firmly until the latch engages. The rear gate can be lowered easily if you pull it down holding the recessed grip.

WARNING

. To prevent dangerous exhaust gas from entering the vehicle, always keep the rear gate closed while driving.

. Do not attempt to shut the rear gate while holding the recessed grip. Also avoid closing the rear gate by pulling on the recessed grip from inside the cargo space. There is a danger of your hand being caught and injured.

CAUTION

. Do not jam a plastic bag in or place cellophane tape on the rear gate stays or scratch the stays while loading or unloading cargo. That could cause leakage of gas from the stays, which may result in their inability to hold the rear gate open.

. Be careful not to hit your head or face on the rear gate when open- ing or closing the rear gate and when loading or unloading car- go.

NOTE If the rear gate cannot be unlocked due to a discharged battery, a fault in the door locking/unlocking system or other causes, you can unlock it by manually operating the rear gate lock release lever. For the procedure, refer to the “Rear gate – if the rear gate cannot be unlocked” section in chapter 9 “In case of emergency”.

Ignition switch

WARNING

. Never turn the ignition switch to “LOCK” while the vehicle is being driven or towed because that will lock the steering wheel, preventing steering control. And when the engine is turned off, it takes a much greater effort than usual to steer.

. Before leaving the vehicle, al- ways remove the key from the ignition switch for safety and never allow an unattended child to remain in the vehicle. Failure to follow this procedure could result in injury to a child or others. Children could operate the power windows, the moon- roof or other controls or even make the vehicle move.

CAUTION

Do not attach a large key holder or key case to either key. If it banged against your knees or hands while you are driving, it could turn the ignition switch from the “ON” posi-

tion to the “Acc” or “LOCK” posi- tion, thereby stopping the engine. Also, the key is attached to a keyholder or to a large bunch of other keys, centrifugal force may act on it as the vehicle moves, resulting in unwanted turning of the ignition switch.

Do not turn the ignition switch to the “START” position while the engine is running.

If your registered key fails to start the engine, pull out the key once (the security indicator light will blink), and then insert the key in the ignition switch and turn it to the “START” position and again try to start the engine.

Hazard warning flasher

. The key is near or touching another transmitter.

& Key reminder chime The reminder chime sounds when the driver’s door opens and the key is in the “LOCK” or “Acc” position. The chime stops when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the key is removed from the ignition switch.

& Ignition switch light For easy access to the ignition switch in the dark, the ignition switch light comes on when driver’s door is opened. The light remains on for 5 seconds and goes out after driver’s door is closed or if the key is turned to the “ON” position.

The hazard warning flasher is used to warn other drivers when you have to park your vehicle under emergency conditions. The hazard warning flasher works regard- less of the position of the ignition switch.

To turn on the hazard warning flasher, push the hazard warning button on the instrument panel. To turn off the flasher, push the button again. NOTE When the hazard warning flasher is on, the turn signals do not work.

This meter displays the odometer and two trip meters when the ignition switch is in the “LOCK”, “Acc” or “ON” position.

If you press the trip knob when the ignition switch is in the “LOCK” position, the odometer/trip meter will light up. is possible to switch the indications while the odometer/trip meter is lit up. If you do not press the trip knob within 10 seconds of illumination of the odometer/trip meter, the odometer/trip meter will go off.

seconds.

CAUTION

To ensure safety, do not attempt to change the function of the indicator during driving, as an accident could result.

NOTE If the connection between the combina- tion meter and battery is broken for any reason such as vehicle maintenance or fuse replacement, the data recorded on the trip meter will be lost.

& Tachometer The tachometer shows the engine speed in thousands of revolutions per minute.

CAUTION

Do not operate the engine with the pointer of the tachometer in the red zone. In this range, fuel injection will be cut by the engine control module

to protect the engine from overrev- ving. The engine will resume run- ning normally after the engine speed is reduced below the red zone.

& Fuel gauge

the fuel gauge will light up and indicate the amount of fuel remaining in the tank. If, while the fuel gauge is indicating the amount of fuel remaining in the tank, you (a) do not press the trip knob for 10
seconds or (b) open and close the driver’s door, the fuel gauge indication will turn off. NOTE

CAUTION

The fuel gauge shows the approximate amount of fuel remaining in the tank. When the ignition switch is in the “LOCK” or “Acc” position, the fuel gauge shows “E” even if the fuel tank contains fuel.

The gauge may move slightly during braking, turning or acceleration due to fuel level movement in the tank. If you press the trip knob while the ignition switch is in the “LOCK” or “Acc” position,

The temperature gauge shows engine coolant temperature when the ignition switch is in the “ON” position.

The coolant temperature will vary in accordance with the outside temperature and driving conditions.

We recommend that you drive moderately until the pointer of the temperature gauge reaches near the middle of the range. Engine operation is optimum with the engine coolant at this temperature range and high revving operation when the engine is not warmed up enough should be avoided.

Do not allow the rear seat occupant to place his/her hands or legs on the front passenger’s seatback, or allow him/her to pull the seatback. . Do not use front seats with their back- ward-forward position and seatback not being locked into place securely. If any of them are not locked securely, adjust them again. For adjusting procedure, refer to the “Front seats” section in chapter 1 in this Owner’s Manual.

If the seatbelt warning device for the front passenger’s seat does not function cor- rectly (e.g., it is activated even when the front passenger’s seat is empty or it is deactivated even when the front passen- ger has not fastened his/her seatbelt), take the following actions. . Ensure that no article is placed on the seat other than a child restraint system and its child occupant, although we strongly recommend that all children sit in the rear seat properly restrained. . Ensure that there is no article left in the seatback pocket. . Ensure that the backward-forward po- sition and seatback of front passenger’s

seat are locked into place securely by moving the seat back and forth.

After that, one of the indicators illuminates depending on the status of the front passenger’s SRS frontal airbag determined by the Subaru advanced frontal airbag system monitor- ing. If the front passenger’s SRS frontal airbag is activated, the passenger’s frontal airbag ON indicator will illuminate while the OFF indicator will remain extinguished. If the front passenger’s SRS frontal airbag the passenger’s frontal is deactivated, airbag ON indicator will remain extin- guished while the OFF indicator will illuminate. With the ignition switch turned to the “ON” position, if both the ON and OFF indica- tors remain lit or extinguished simulta- neously even after the system check period, the system is faulty. Contact your SUBARU dealer immediately for an in- spection.

CAUTION

If the CHECK ENGINE light comes on while you are driving, have your vehicle checked/repaired by your SUBARU dealer as soon as possi- ble. Continued vehicle operation without having the emission control system checked and repaired as necessary could cause serious da- mage, which may not be covered by your vehicle’s warranty.

If this light comes on steadily or blinks while the engine is running, it may indicate that there is a problem or potential problem somewhere in the emission con- trol system. ! If the light comes on steadily: If the light comes on steadily while driving or does not go out after the engine starts, an emission control system malfunction has been detected. You should have your vehicle checked by an authorized SUBARU dealer immedi- ately.

NOTE This light also comes on when the fuel filler cap is not tightened until it clicks. If you have recently refueled your vehicle, the cause of the CHECK ENGINE warning light/malfunction indicator lamp coming on could be a loose or missing fuel filler cap. Remove the cap and retighten it until it clicks. Make sure nothing is interfering with the sealing of the cap. Tightening the cap will not make the CHECK ENGINE warning light turn off immediately. It may take several driving trips. If the light does not go out, take your vehicle to your authorized SUBARU dealer immediately. ! Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pressure recommended by the vehicle manufac- turer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label. (If your vehicle has tires of a different size than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pres- sure label, you should determine the proper inflation pressure for those tires.)

As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure telltale when one or more of your tires is significantly under- inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire pressure telltale illuminates, you should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantly under- inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and

WARNING

If this light does not come on briefly after the ignition switch is turned ON or the light illuminates steadily after blinking for approximately one min- ute, you should have your Tire P r e s s u r e M on i t o r i n g S y s t e m checked at a SUBARU dealer as soon as possible. If this light comes on while driving, never brake suddenly and keep driving straight ahead while gradu- ally reducing speed. Then slowly pull off the road to a safe place. Otherwise an accident involving serious vehicle damage and serious personal injury could occur. If this light still comes on while driving after adjusting the tire pres- sure, a tire may have significant damage and a fast leak that causes the tire to lose air rapidly. If you have

a flat tire, replace it with a spare tire as soon as possible. When a spare tire is mounted or a wheel rim is replaced without the original pressure sensor/transmitter being transferred, the Low tire pres- sure warning light will illuminates steadily after blinking for approxi- mately one minute. This indicates the TPMS is unable to monitor all four road wheels. & ABS warning light The ABS warning light comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position and goes out after approximately 2 seconds. This is an indication that the ABS system is working properly.

CAUTION

If the warning light behaves as follows, the ABS system may not work properly. When the warning light is on, the ABS function shuts down; however, the conventional brake system con- tinues to operate normally. . The warning light does not come on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position.

Continuing to drive with the AWD warning light flashing can damage the powertrain. If the AWD warning light starts to flash, promptly park in a safe place and check whether the tires have differing diameters and whether any of the tires has an excessively low inflation pressure.
