SECURITY SYSTEMS (if so equipped)

LIC0301
Your vehicle may have two types of security sys- tems: c Vehicle security system (if so equipped) c NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System VEHICLE SECURITY SYSTEM (if so equipped) The vehicle security system provides visual and audible alarm signals if someone opens the doors when the system is armed. It is not, however, a motion detection type system that activates when a vehicle is moved or when a vibration occurs.

The system helps deter vehicle theft but cannot prevent it, nor can it prevent the theft of interior or exterior vehicle components in all situations. Al- ways secure your vehicle even if parking for a brief period. Never leave your keys in the ignition, and always lock the vehicle when unattended. Be aware of your surroundings, and park in secure, well-lit areas whenever possible. Many devices offering additional protection, such as component locks, identification markers, and tracking systems, are available at auto supply stores and specialty shops. Your NISSAN dealer may also offer such equipment. Check with your insurance company to see if you may be eligible for discounts for various theft protection features. How to arm the vehicle security system 1. Close all windows. (The system can be armed even if the windows are open.) 2. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK posi-

tion and remove the key.

3. Close all doors. Lock all doors. The doors

can be locked with: c the power door lock switch (if the door is

opened, locked and then closed).

c the key (cid:151) master or mechanical (Intelli-

gent Key models).

c When the

button is pushed with all doors locked, the hazard lights flash twice and the horn beeps once as a re- minder that the doors are already locked. The horn may or may not beep. Refer to (cid:147)Silencing the horn beep feature(cid:148) in the (cid:147)Pre-driving checks and adjustments(cid:148) sec- tion later in this manual.

4. Confirm that the

indicator light comes on. The light stays on for about 30
seconds. The vehicle security system is now pre-armed. After about 30 seconds the ve- hicle security system automatically shifts into the armed phase. The light begins to flash once every 3 seconds. If, during the 30-second pre-arm time period, the driver(cid:146)s door is unlocked by the key, a request switch, the keyfob or Intelligent Key, or if the ignition switch is turned to ACC or ON, the system will not arm.

2-16 Instruments and controls

c If the key is turned slowly when locking the driver(cid:146)s door, the system may not arm. Furthermore, if the key is turned beyond the vertical position toward the unlock position to remove the key, the system may be disarmed when the key is removed. If the indicator light fails to glow for 30 seconds, unlock the door once and lock it again.

c Even when the driver and/or passen- gers are in the vehicle, the system will arm with all doors closed and locked with the ignition key in the OFF posi- tion.

Vehicle security system activation The vehicle security system will give the following alarm: c The headlights blink and the horn sounds

intermittently.

c The alarm automatically turns off after ap- proximately 50 seconds. However, the alarm reactivates if the vehicle is tampered with again. The alarm can be shut off by unlocking the driver(cid:146)s door with the key, a request switch or by pressing the button on the keyfob or Intelligent Key.

The alarm is activated by: c opening a door without using the key, a request switch, keyfob or Intelligent Key (even if the door is unlocked by using the inside lock knob or the power door lock switch).

How to stop an activated alarm The alarm stops only by unlocking the driver(cid:146)s door with the key, pressing the button on the keyfob or Intelligent Key, or by unlocking all doors with any request switch (Intelligent Key models). NISSAN VEHICLE IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM The NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System will not allow the engine to start without the use of a registered key.

If the engine fails to start using a registered key (for example, when interference is caused by another registered key, an automated toll road device or automatic payment device on the key ring), restart the engine using the following pro- cedures:

1. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position

for approximately 5 seconds.

Z REVIEW COPY—2008 Sentra (sen) Owners Manual—USA_English (nna) 01/22/08—debbie X

2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF or LOCK position, and wait approximately 10 sec- onds.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2. 4. Restart the engine while holding the device (which may have caused the interference) separate from the registered key.

If the no start condition re-occurs, NISSAN rec- ommends placing the registered key on a sepa- rate key ring to avoid interference from other devices. Statement related to Section 15 of FCC Rules for NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer Sys- tem (CONT ASSY (cid:151) IMMOBILIZER, ANT ASSY (cid:151) IMMOBILIZER) This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules and RSS-210 of Industry Canada. Operation is subject to the follow- ing two conditions; (1) This device may not cause harmful in- terference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including inter- ference that may cause undesired opera- tion of the device.

CHANGES OR MODIFICATIONS NOT EX- PRESSLY APPROVED BY THE PARTY RE- SPONSIBLE FOR COMPLIANCE COULD VOID THE USER(cid:146)S AUTHORITY TO OPER- ATE THE EQUIPMENT.

Additional or replacement keys:

If you still have a key, the key number is not necessary when you need extra NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System keys. Your dealer can dupli- cate your existing key. As many as five NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System keys can be used with one vehicle. You should bring all NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System keys that you have to your NISSAN dealer for registration. This is be- cause the registration process will erase the memory of all key codes previously registered into the NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System. After the registration process, these components will only recognize keys coded into the NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System during registration.

CAUTION

WARNING

Always carry the mechanical key installed in the Intelligent Key slot.

c Always have the doors locked while driving. Along with the use of seat belts, this provides greater safety in the event of an accident by helping to prevent persons from being thrown from the vehicle. This also helps keep children and others from unintentionally open- ing the doors, and will help keep out intruders.

c Before opening any door, always look

for and avoid oncoming traffic.

c Do not leave children unattended inside the vehicle. They could unknowingly ac- tivate switches or controls. Unattended children could become involved in seri- ous accidents.

INTELLIGENT KEY SYSTEM (if so equipped)

WARNING

Radio waves could adversely affect elec- tric medical equipment. Those who use a pacemaker should contact the electric medical equipment manufacturer for the possible influences before use.

The Intelligent Key system can operate all the door locks using the remote controller function or pushing the request switch on the vehicle without taking the key out from a pocket or purse. The operating environment and/or conditions may af- fect the Intelligent Key system operation.

Be sure to read the following before using the Intelligent Key system.

CAUTION

c Be sure to carry the Intelligent Key with

you when operating the vehicle.

c Never leave the Intelligent Key in the

vehicle when you leave the vehicle.

The Intelligent Key is always communicating with the vehicle as it receives radio waves. The Intel- ligent Key system transmits weak radio waves. Environmental conditions may interfere with the operation of the Intelligent Key system under the following operating conditions.

c When operating near a location where strong radio waves are transmitted, such as a TV tower, power station and broadcasting station.

c When in possession of wireless equipment, such as a cellular telephone, transceiver, and CB radio.

c When the Intelligent Key is in contact with or

covered by metallic materials.

c When any type of radio wave remote control

is used nearby.

c When the Intelligent Key is placed near an electric appliance such as a personal com- puter.

c When the vehicle is parked near a parking

meter.

In such cases, correct the operating conditions before using the Intelligent Key function or use the mechanical key. Although the life of the battery varies depending on the operating conditions, the battery(cid:146)s life is approximately 2 years. the battery is dis- charged, replace it with a new one. When the Intelligent Key battery is low, the Intel- ligent Key system warning light ( ) will blink green for about 30 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position.

c Do not attach the Intelligent Key with a

key holder that contains a magnet.

c Do not place the Intelligent Key near equipment that produces a magnetic field, such as a TV, audio equipment and personal computers.

If an Intelligent Key is lost or stolen, NISSAN recommends erasing the ID code of that Intelli- gent Key from the vehicle. This may prevent the unauthorized use of the Intelligent Key to operate the vehicle. For information regarding the erasing procedure, contact a NISSAN dealer.

Since the Intelligent Key is continuously receiving radio waves, if the key is left near equipment which transmits strong radio waves, such as sig- nals from a TV and personal computer, the bat- tery life may become shorter.

For information regarding replacement of a bat- tery, see (cid:147)Battery(cid:148) in the (cid:147)Maintenance and do-it- yourself(cid:148) section.

As many as 4 Intelligent Keys can be registered and used with one vehicle. For information about the purchase and use of additional Intelligent Keys, contact a NISSAN dealer.

CAUTION

c Do not allow the Intelligent Key, which contains electrical components, to come into contact with water or salt water. This could affect the system function.

c Do not drop the Intelligent Key. c Do not strike the Intelligent Key sharply

against another object.

c Do not change or modify the Intelligent
