You are responsible for the distance to the vehicle in front, for vehicle speed, for braking in good time and for staying in your lane.
! Never tow the vehicle with one axle
raised. This may damage the transfer case. Damage of this sort is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. All wheels must remain either on the ground or be fully raised. Observe the instructions for towing the vehicle with all wheels in full contact with the ground.
! A function or performance test should
only be carried out on a two-axle dynamometer. Before you operate the vehicle on such a dynamometer, please consult a qualified workshop. You could
otherwise damage the drive train or the brake system.
4MATIC ensures that all four wheels are permanently driven. Together with ESP® and 4ETS, it improves the traction of your vehicle whenever a drive wheel spins due to insufficient grip.
i In wintry driving conditions, the maximum
effect of 4MATIC can only be achieved if you use winter tires (M+S tires), with snow chains if necessary.

DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation)
Important safety notes
DSR assists you when driving downhill. It keeps the speed of travel at the speed set on the on-board computer. The steeper the downhill gradient, the greater the DSR braking effect on the vehicle. When driving on flat stretches of road or on an uphill gradient, the DSR braking effect is minimal or nonexistent.
DSR controls the set speed when it is active and the automatic transmission is in the D, R or N position. By accelerating or braking, you can always drive at a higher or a lower speed than that set on the on-board computer.

If the current vehicle speed is too high, the à DSR symbol appears in the multifunction display with the Max. Speed 25 mph message (Canada: 40 km/h).
G WARNING If the speed driven and the set speed deviate and you activate DSR on a slippery road surface, the wheels may lose traction. If the wheels lose traction. the vehicle can no longer be steered. There is an increased danger of skidding and accidents.
Never activate DSR on slippery road surfaces.
Activating DSR
G WARNING If you drive faster than the set speed and activate DSR, the vehicle will decelerate on downhill gradients. If you do not know the set speed, the vehicle could decelerate unexpectedly. There is a risk of an accident.
Decelerate the vehicle to the set speed before activating DSR. If you do not know what the stored set speed is, store the desired set speed again.
i You cannot activate DSR if the SPORT on- road program is activated. The à DSR symbol and the Not in Drive Program SPORT message then appear in the multifunction display.

Important safety notes
G WARNING If you install a ball coupling other than the one delivered with the vehicle, the trailer tow hitch and the rear axle may be overloaded. This applies especially if the ball coupling in question is longer or angled differently. This could seriously impair the driving characteristics and the trailer can come loose. There is a risk of an accident.
Only install the ball coupling delivered with the vehicle or a ball coupling that is designed to meet your trailer towing requirements. Do not modify the ball coupling or the trailer tow hitch.
G WARNING If the ball coupling is not installed correctly or not secured with the bolt provided and the corresponding spring cotter, the trailer may come loose. There is a risk of an accident.
Always install and secure the ball coupling as described. Before every journey, ensure that the ball coupling is secured with the bolt and the corresponding spring cotter.
G WARNING If you rest your foot on the brake pedal while driving, the braking system can overheat. This increases the stopping distance and can even

cause the braking system to fail. There is a risk of an accident.
Never use the brake pedal as a footrest. Never depress the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal at the same time.
G WARNING When the vehicle/trailer combination begins to lurch, you could lose control of it. The vehicle/trailer combination could even rollover. There is a risk of an accident.
On no account should you attempt to straighten up the vehicle/trailer combination by increasing the speed. Reduce vehicle speed and do not countersteer. Apply the brake as necessary.
! Depressing the brake pedal constantly
results in excessive and premature wear to the brake pads.
Please observe the manufacturer's operating instructions for the trailer coupling if a detachable trailer coupling is used.
Couple and uncouple the trailer carefully. If you do not couple the trailer to the towing vehicle correctly, the trailer could become detached.
Make sure that the following values are not exceeded:
Rthe permissible trailer drawbar noseweight
Rthe permissible trailer load
Rthe permissible rear axle load of the towing
vehicle
Rthe maximum permissible gross vehicle
weight of both the towing vehicle and the trailer

When towing a trailer, your vehicle's handling characteristics will be different in comparison with when driving without a trailer.

This lowers the risk of an accident.
ROnly install an approved trailer coupling on
your vehicle.
Further information on availability and on installation is available from any authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
RThe bumpers of your vehicle are not
suitable for installing detachable trailer couplings.
RDo not install hired trailer couplings or
other detachable trailer couplings on the bumpers of your vehicle.
RIf you no longer need the ball coupling, remove it from the ball coupling recess. This will reduce the risk of damage to the ball coupling.
i When towing a trailer, set the tire
pressure on the rear axle of the towing
vehicle for a maximum load; see the tire pressure table in the fuel filler flap (Y page 421).
You will find installation dimensions and loads in the "Technical data" section (Y page 448).
The maximum noseweight of the trailer drawbar on the ball coupling is 600 lbs (272 kg).
The actual noseweight may not be higher than the value which is given. The value can be found on the trailer tow hitch or trailer identification plates. The lowest weight applies.
Please note that when towing a trailer, PARKTRONIC (Y page 217) and Blind Spot Assist (Y page 237) are only available with limitations, or not at all.
Driving tips
i Observe the information on ESP® trailer
stabilization (Y page 72) and on pulling away with a trailer (Y page 166).
The maximum permissible speed for vehicle/ trailer combinations depends on the type of trailer. Before beginning the journey, check the trailer's documents to see what the maximum permissible speed is. Observe the legally prescribed maximum speed in the relevant country.
For certain Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the maximum permissible rear axle load is increased when towing a trailer. See "Technical data" to find out whether this applies to your vehicle (Y page 449). If you utilize any of the added maximum rear axle load when towing a trailer, the vehicle/trailer combination may not exceed a maximum speed of 60 mph (100 km/h) for reasons concerning the operating permit. This also applies in countries in which the permissible maximum speed for vehicle/trailer combinations is above 60 mph (100 km/h).
When towing a trailer, your vehicle's handling characteristics will be different in comparison with when driving without a trailer.
On long and steep downhill gradients, you must select shift range 1, 2 or 3 in good time.
i This also applies if you have activated
cruise control or DISTRONIC PLUS.
This will use the braking effect of the engine, so that less braking will be required to maintain the speed, This relieves the load on the brake system and prevents the brakes from overheating and wearing too quickly. If you need additional braking, depress the brake pedal repeatedly rather than continuously.
Driving tips
If the trailer swings from side to side:
X Do not accelerate.
X Do not counter-steer.
X Brake if necessary.
RMaintain a greater distance from the
vehicle in front than when driving without a trailer.
RAvoid braking abruptly. If possible, brake
gently at first to allow the trailer to run on. Then, increase the braking force rapidly.
RThe values given for gradient-climbing
capabilities from a standstill refer to sea level. When driving in mountainous areas, note that the power output of the engine and, consequently, the vehicle's gradient- climbing capability, decreases with increasing altitude.

These restrictions apply to all accessories powered through a connection to the trailer power socket of your vehicle, e.g. a bicycle carrier.
Observe the maximum permissible trailer dimensions (width and length).
Most U.S. states and all Canadian provinces require by law:
RSafety chains between the towing vehicle and the trailer. The chains should be cross- wound under the trailer drawbar. They must be fastened to the vehicle's trailer coupling, not to the bumper or the axle.
Leave enough play in the chains to make tight cornering possible.
RA separate brake system for certain types
of trailer.
RA safety switch for braked trailers. Check the specific legal requirements applicable to your state.
If the trailer detaches from the towing vehicle, the safety switch applies the trailer's brakes.
Towing a trailer
There are numerous legal requirements concerning the towing of a trailer, e.g. speed restrictions. Make sure that your vehicle/ trailer combination complies with the local requirements not only in your area of residence but also at any location to which you are traveling. The police and local authorities can provide reliable information.
Please observe the following when towing a trailer:
RTo acquaint yourself with driving with a trailer and with the resulting changes to handling, you should practice cornering, stopping and backing up in a traffic-free location.
RBefore driving, check:
- Trailer tow hitch
- Safety switch for braked trailers
- Safety chains
- Electrical connections
- Lights

RAdjust the exterior mirrors to provide an
unobstructed view of the rear section of the trailer.
RIf the trailer features electronically
controlled brakes, pull away the vehicle/ trailer combination carefully, manually brake using the brake controller, and check the brakes for correct function.

RSecure any objects on the trailer to prevent the cargo from slipping when the vehicle is in motion.
RIf you couple up a trailer, regularly check the cargo for secure fastening and make sure that the trailer lamps and (if applicable) the trailer brakes are functioning correctly.
RBear in mind that the handling will be less
stable when towing a trailer than when driving without one. Avoid sudden steering movements.
RThe vehicle/trailer combination is heavier, accelerates more slowly, has a decreased gradient climbing capability and a longer braking distance.
It is more susceptible to side winds and requires more careful steering.
RIf possible, avoid abrupt braking. Depress the brake pedal moderately at first, so that the trailer can activate its own brakes. Then increase the pressure on the brake pedal.
RIf the automatic transmission continues to
shift back and forth between two gears when driving up or downhill, restrict the shift range. Select shift range 4, 3, 2, or 1.
A lower gear and lower speed reduce the risk of engine failure.
Due to the length of your vehicle/trailer combination, you will have to travel an additional distance beyond the vehicle you are overtaking before returning to the previous lane.
Decoupling a trailer
G WARNING If you uncouple a trailer with the overrun brake engaged, you could trap your hand between the vehicle and the trailer drawbar. There is a risk of injury.
Do not uncouple a trailer if the overrun brake is engaged.
G WARNING Vehicles with level control:
The vehicle is lowered as soon as you disconnect the trailer cable. This could result in your limbs or those of other people that are between the vehicle body and tires or underneath the vehicle being trapped. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the immediate vicinity of the wheel housings or under the vehicle when you disconnect the trailer cable.
RWhen driving downhill, shift to a lower gear
! Do not disconnect a trailer with an

Permissible trailer loads and drawbar
loads
Weight specifications
i The weight of additional accessories,
passengers, and cargo reduces the permissible trailer load and drawbar load for your vehicle.
Maximum permissible gross vehicle
weight rating
The gross trailer weight is calculated by adding the weight of the trailer to the weight of the load and equipment on the trailer.
Permissible gross weight: 7,500 lb (3,402 kg).
Permissible noseweight
The maximum permissible trailer drawbar noseweight is the maximum weight with which the trailer drawbar can be loaded: 600 lbs (272 kg).
Limit for Mercedes-Benz-approved trailer couplings.
Loading a trailer
Checking the vehicle and trailer weight
RTo check that the weights of the towing
vehicle and the trailer comply with the maximum permissible values, have the vehicle/trailer combination (including the driver, passengers, and cargo with a fully laden trailer) weighed on a calibrated weighbridge.
RCheck the gross axle weight rating of the
front and rear axles, the gross weight of the trailer and trailer drawbar load.
Removing the ball coupling
X Remove the spring cotter.
X Remove the bolt from the ball coupling
RWhen loading the trailer, make sure that

X Clean the ball coupling if it is dirty.

Storing the ball coupling
G WARNING Do not carry the ball coupling in the vehicle interior if it is not secured.
Otherwise, you and others could be injured by the ball coupling being thrown around if you:

neither the permissible gross weight of the trailer nor the gross vehicle weight is exceeded. The permissible gross vehicle weight is indicated on the identification plate on the B-pillar on the driver's side of the vehicle.
You can find the maximum permissible values on the type plates of your vehicle and the trailer. When calculating how much weight the vehicle and trailer may carry, pay attention to the respective lowest values.
RThe trailer drawbar load on the ball coupling must be added to the rear axle load to avoid exceeding the permissible gross axle weight. The permissible gross vehicle weight is indicated on the identification plate on the B-pillar on the driver's side of the vehicle.
i Mercedes-Benz recommends a trailer
load where the trailer drawbar noseweight accounts for 8% to 15% of the trailer's permissible gross weight.

Trailer power supply
! You can connect accessories with a
maximum power consumption of 240 W to the permanent power supply.
You must not charge a trailer battery using the power supply.
The trailer socket of your vehicle is equipped at the factory with a permanent power supply.
The permanent power supply is supplied via trailer socket pin 4.
The trailer's permanent power supply is switched off in the event of low vehicle supply voltage and after six hours at the latest.
A qualified specialist workshop can provide more information about installing the trailer electrics.

Important safety notes
G WARNING If you operate information systems and communication equipment integrated in the vehicle while driving, you will be distracted from traffic conditions. You could also lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of an accident.
Only operate the equipment when the traffic situation permits. If you are not sure that this is possible, park the vehicle paying attention to traffic conditions and operate the equipment when the vehicle is stationary.
G WARNING If the instrument cluster has failed or malfunctioned, you may not recognize function restrictions in systems relevant to safety. The operating safety of your vehicle may be impaired. There is a risk of an accident.
Drive on carefully. Have the vehicle checked at a qualified specialist workshop immediately.
You must observe the legal requirements for the country in which you are currently driving when operating the on-board computer.

Instrument cluster lighting
The lighting in the instrument cluster, in the displays and the controls in the vehicle interior can be adjusted using the brightness control knob.
The brightness control knob is located on the bottom left of the instrument cluster (Y page 33).
X Turn the brightness control knob clockwise
or counter-clockwise. If the light switch is set to Ã, T or L, the brightness is dependent upon the brightness of the ambient light.
i The light sensor in the instrument cluster
automatically controls the brightness of the multifunction display.
In daylight, the displays in the instrument cluster are not illuminated.
Coolant temperature display
G WARNING Driving when your engine is overheated can cause some fluids which may have leaked into the engine compartment to catch fire. You could be seriously burned.
Steam from an overheated engine can cause serious burns which can occur just by opening the engine hood. Stay away from the engine if you see or hear steam coming from it.
Stop the vehicle in a safe location away from other traffic. Turn off the engine, get out of the

vehicle and do not stand near the vehicle until the engine has cooled down.
One or two segments in the set speed range light up.
! A display message is shown if the coolant
temperature is too high.
If the coolant temperature is over 248 ‡(120 †), do not continue driving. The engine will otherwise be damaged.
The coolant temperature gauge is in the instrument cluster on the right-hand side (Y page 33).
Under normal operating conditions and with the specified coolant level, the coolant temperature may rise to 248 ‡ (120 †).
Tachometer
! Do not drive in the overrevving range, as
this could damage the engine.
The red band in the tachometer indicates the engine's overrevving range.
The fuel supply is interrupted to protect the engine when the red band is reached.
Outside temperature display
You should pay special attention to road conditions when temperatures are around freezing point.
The outside temperature display is in the multifunction display (Y page 269).
Changes in the outside temperature are displayed after a short delay.
Speedometer with segments
The segments in the speedometer indicate which speed range is available.
RCruise control activated (Y page 195):
The segments light up from the stored speed to the maximum speed.
RDISTRONIC PLUS activated (Y page 198):
RDISTRONIC PLUS detects a vehicle in front:
The segments between the speed of the vehicle in front and the stored speed light up.
