Mobile phone Important safety notes G WARNING Operating mobile communications equip- ment while driving distracts you from paying attention to traffic conditions. This could also cause you to lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of an accident. Use this device only when the vehicle is sta- tionary.

354 Features

i You must observe the legal requirements for the country in which you are currently driving when operating mobile communi- cations equipment in the vehicle. If it is permitted by law to operate commu- nications equipment while the vehicle is in motion, you may only do so if the traffic sit- uation permits. You may otherwise be dis- tracted from the traffic conditions, cause an accident and injure yourself and others. Excessive levels of electromagnetic radiation may cause damage to your health and to the health of others. The use of an exterior aerial takes into consideration the scientific discus- sion surrounding the possible health risk posed by electromagnetic fields. Mercedes-Benz recommends the use of an approved exterior aerial. This ensures: Roptimal mobile phone reception quality in

the vehicle.

Rmutual interference between the vehicle

electronics and mobile phones is mini- mised.

An exterior aerial has the following advan- tages: Rit conducts the electromagnetic fields gen- erated by a wireless device to the exterior. Rthe field strength in the vehicle interior is lower than in a vehicle that does not have an exterior aerial.

ist workshops: (Y page 26).

Engine compartment Bonnet Important safety notes G WARNING An unlocked bonnet may open while driving and block your view. There is a risk of an acci- dent. Never unlock the bonnet while driving. G WARNING When being opened and closed, the bonnet may suddenly fall into the closed position. There is a risk of injury to persons in the range of movement of the bonnet. Open and close the bonnet only when nobody is in the range of movement. G WARNING If you open the bonnet while the engine is overheating or while there is a fire in the engine compartment, you could come into contact with hot gases or other leaking service products. There is a danger of injury. Allow an overheating engine to cool down before opening the bonnet. If there is a fire in the engine compartment, leave the bonnet closed and notify the fire brigade.

G WARNING There are parts in the engine compartment that move. Certain components may continue to run even if the ignition is switched off or may suddenly start again, e.g. the radiator fan. There is a danger of injury. If you need to access the engine compart- ment: Rswitch off the ignition Rnever enter the danger area of moving com-

ponents, e.g. the rotation area of the fan Rkeep items of clothing away from moving

parts G WARNING The ignition system and the fuel injection sys- tem operate with a high voltage. If you touch the live components, you could receive an electric shock. There is a danger of injury. Never touch components of the ignition sys- tem or the fuel injection system when the ignition is switched on. G WARNING Hybrid vehicles: ensure that you read the "HYBRID" supplement. You could otherwise fail to recognise dangers.

Active bonnet (pedestrian protection) Operating principle ! An active bonnet that had been triggered

must be repaired at a qualified specialist workshop. The active bonnet function will then be available again. The additional pedestrian protection provided by the active bonnet will then be restored.

! Do not try to press down the raised bon-

net at the back. Otherwise, the bonnet could be damaged.

i The active bonnet is only available in cer- tain countries. It is available for all models, except for AMG vehicles.

Engine compartment

The active bonnet can reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians in certain accident situations. Raising the active bonnet increases the clear- ance to hard components, such as the engine.

If active bonnet : has been triggered, it will be raised at the back by about 50 mm. Lids ; will then no longer rest on housings =. The active bonnet is triggered by pyro- technics. You can reset a triggered active bonnet your- self. Even if the active bonnet has been triggered, you can still continue driving and have it reset at a qualified specialist workshop. If you pull the bonnet release lever, you must reset the bonnet before driving on. Resetting G WARNING Certain components in the engine compart- ment could be very hot, e.g. the engine, the radiator and parts of the exhaust system. There is a risk of injury when accessing the engine compartment. As far as possible, allow the engine to cool down and only touch the following compo- nents.

X Open the bonnet (Y page 366). X With both hands, lift the bonnet up in the centre A. The bonnet is open wide enough when both lids of bonnet lifter ; no longer move. If you push the lids back, you will notice resistance.

X Release bonnet :. X Check whether the lids of bonnet lifter ;

are resting on housings = (arrow).

X The lids of bonnet lifter ; are resting

on the housings: close bonnet : (Y page 366).

or X The lids of bonnet lifter ; are not rest-

ing on the housings: first, lift up bon- net : on left-hand side ? and then on right-hand side B. Lift up bonnet : until the respective lid of bonnet lifter ; no lon- ger moves. The lids of bonnet lifter ; must rest on housings = (arrow).

X Close bonnet :(Y page 366). If you cannot close bonnet : or if the L symbol appears in the multifunction display, repeat the steps. If the bonnet still does not engage correctly or the L symbol appears in the multifunc- tion display, do not drive any further. Contact a qualified specialist workshop. If active bonnet : has been triggered, it will be raised at the back by about 50 mm. Lids ; will then no longer rest on housings

dle ; up and lift the bonnet. If you lift the bonnet by approximately 40 cm, the bonnet is opened and held open automatically by the gas-filled strut.

Closing the bonnet X Lower the bonnet and let it fall from a

height of approximately 20 cm.

X Check that the bonnet has engaged prop-

erly. If the bonnet can be raised slightly, it is not properly engaged. Open it again and close it with a little more force.

Radiator Vehicles with a diesel engine: do not cover the radiator. Do not use thermal mats, insect protection covers or anything similar. Doing so can cause the Onboard Diagnostics Sys- tem to display inaccurate values. Some of these values are legally required and must always be correct.

Engine oil General notes G WARNING Hybrid vehicles: ensure that you read the "HYBRID" supplement. You could otherwise fail to recognise dangers.

Depending on your driving style, the vehicle consumes up to 0.8 litres of oil per 1,000 km. The oil consumption may be higher than this when the vehicle is new or if you frequently drive at high engine speeds. Depending on the engine, the oil dipstick may be installed at a different location. When checking the oil level: Rpark the vehicle on a level surface. Rthe engine should be switched off for

approximately five minutes if the engine is at normal operating temperature.

Rif the engine is not at normal operating temperature, e.g. if the engine was only started briefly, wait about 30 minutes before carrying out the measurement.

Checking the oil level using the oil dip- stick G WARNING Certain components in the engine compart- ment could be very hot, e.g. the engine, the radiator and parts of the exhaust system. There is a risk of injury when accessing the engine compartment. As far as possible, allow the engine to cool down and only touch the following compo- nents.

If the ASSYST PLUS service interval dis- play has been inadvertently reset, this set- ting can be corrected at a qualified special- ist workshop. Have service work carried out as described in the Service Booklet. This may otherwise lead to increased wear and damage to the major assemblies or the vehicle.

A qualified specialist workshop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre, will reset the ASSYST PLUS service interval display after the service work has been carried out. You can also obtain further information on main- tenance work, for example.

Special service requirements The prescribed service interval is based on normal operation of the vehicle. Service work will need to be performed more often if the vehicle is operated under arduous conditions or increased loads, for example: Rregular city driving with frequent intermedi-

ate stops

Rif the vehicle is primarily used to travel

short distances

Rfor frequent operation in mountainous ter-

rain or on poor road surfaces

Rif the engine is often left idling for long peri-

ods

In these or similar operating conditions, have the air filter, engine oil and oil filter, for exam- ple, changed more frequently. The tyres must be checked more frequently if the vehicle is operated under increased loads. Further information can be obtained at a qualified specialist workshop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre. Driving abroad An extensive Mercedes-Benz Service network is also available in other countries. The Service Hotline's current telephone numbers for use when you are abroad are to be found in the "Mercedes-Benz Service24h" section of the Service Booklet.

AdBlue® service indicator i For BlueTEC vehicles only. To function properly, BlueTEC exhaust gas aftertreatment must be operated with the reducing agent AdBlue®. AdBlue® is topped up as part of the service. Under normal oper- ating conditions, a full tank of AdBlue® should last until the next service due date. Depending on how and where the vehicle is used, there may be an increase in the AdBlue® consumption, resulting in the next service due date being brought forward.

Care 371

Certain display messages show that AdBlue® must be topped up, e.g.: Refill AdBlue at workshop See Own‐ er's Manual Refill AdBlue at workshop No start in .. km A warning signal also sounds. You can no longer start the engine when the AdBlue® supply has been used up (Y page 303). ! Have the AdBlue® tank topped up at a qualified specialist workshop only. The vehicle may otherwise be damaged or soiled.

Before taking a trip with your vehicle outside Europe, have the AdBlue® supply checked at a qualified specialist workshop. If necessary, have AdBlue® topped up. Before a longer stay outside of Europe, consult a qualified special- ist workshop. Observe the notes on AdBlue®(Y page 473). Further information about BlueTEC exhaust gas aftertreatment and AdBlue® can be obtained at a qualified specialist workshop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

X Use tar remover to remove tar stains. X Use silicone remover to remove wax.

Care and treatment of matt paintwork ! Never polish the vehicle or the light alloy

wheels. Polishing makes the paintwork shiny.

! The following may cause the paint to

become shiny and thus reduce the matt effect: RVigorous rubbing with unsuitable mate-

rials.

RFrequent use of car washes. RWashing the vehicle in direct sunlight. ! Never use paint cleaner, buffing or pol- ishing products, or gloss preserver, e.g. wax. These products are only suitable for high-gloss surfaces. Their use on vehicles with matt finish leads to considerable sur- face damage (shiny, spotted areas).

Always have paintwork repairs performed at a qualified specialist workshop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

! Do not use wash programs with a hot wax

treatment under any circumstances.

Observe these notes if your vehicle has a clear matt finish. This will help you to avoid damage to the paintwork due to incorrect treatment. These notes also apply to light-alloy wheels with a clear matt finish. i The vehicle should preferably be washed by hand using a soft sponge, car shampoo and plenty of water.
