Switching off the ESP®

Warning!

The ESP® should not be switched off during normal driving other than in the circum- stances described below. Disabling of the system will reduce vehicle stability in stan- dard driving maneuvers.

To improve the vehicle’s traction, switch off the ESP® in driving situations where it would be advantageous to have the drive wheels spin and thus cut into surfaces for better grip such as: 앫 when driving with snow chains 앫 in deep snow 앫 in sand or gravel

Distronic* cannot be activated when the ESP® has been switched off.

When the ESP® is switched off and one or more drive wheels are spinning, the ESP® warning lamp v in the instru- ment cluster flashes. However, the ESP® will then not stabilize the vehicle.

When the ESP® warning lamp v is illumi- nated continuously, the ESP® is switched off.

Adapt your speed and driving to the prevail- ing road conditions and to the non-operating status of the ESP®.

Avoid spinning of a drive wheel for an extended period with the ESP® switched off. This may cause serious damage to the drivetrain which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

Switching on the ESP® 왘 Press ESP® switch 1.

The ESP® warning lamp v in the in- strument cluster goes out. You are now again in normal driving mode with the ESP® switched on.

왔 Anti-theft systems Immobilizer

The immobilizer prevents unauthorized persons from starting your vehicle.

Activating

With the SmartKey 왘 Remove the SmartKey from the starter

switch. The immobilizer is activated.

With KEYLESS-GO* 왘 Turn off the engine by means of the

KEYLESS-GO start/stop button (컄 page 35).

왘 Open the driver’s door.

The immobilizer is activated.

Deactivating

Anti-theft alarm system

With the SmartKey 왘 Insert the SmartKey in the starter

switch. The immobilizer is deactivated.

With KEYLESS-GO* 왘 Start the engine by means of the

KEYLESS-GO start/stop button (컄 page 35). The immobilizer is deactivated.

In case the engine cannot be started (yet the vehicle’s battery is charged), the system is not operational. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center or call 1-800-FOR-MERCedes (in the USA), or 1-800-387-0100 (in Canada).

Once the alarm system has been armed, a visual and audible alarm is triggered when someone opens: 앫 a door 앫 the trunk 앫 the hood The alarm will stay on even if the activating element (a door, for example) is immedi- ately closed. The alarm system will also be triggered when 앫 someone attempts to raise the vehicle 앫 the vehicle is opened using the

mechanical key

왘 Lock your vehicle with the SmartKey or

KEYLESS-GO*. The turn signal lamps flash three times to indicate that the alarm system is ac- tivated. The indicator lamp 1 flashes to indicate that the alarm system is armed.

Disarming the alarm system 왘 Unlock your vehicle with the SmartKey

or the KEYLESS-GO*. The turn signal lamps flash once to in- dicate that the alarm system is dis- armed.

The alarm system will rearm automati- cally again after approximately 40 sec- onds if no door was opened.

If the turn signal lamps does not flash three times one of the following ele- ments may not be properly closed: 앫 a door 앫 the trunk Close the respective element and lock the vehicle again.

If the alarm stays on for more than 30 seconds, a call to the Response Center is initiated automatically by the Tele Aid system (컄 page 241) provided Tele Aid service was subscribed to and properly activated, and that necessary cellular service and GPS coverage are available.

Tow-away alarm

Once the tow-away alarm is armed, a visual and audible alarm will be triggered when someone attempts to raise the vehicle.

The tow-away protection alarm is trig- gered, for example, if the vehicle is lift- ed on one side. If the alarm stays on for more than 30 seconds, a call to the Response Center is initiated automatically by the Tele Aid system (컄 page 241) provided Tele Aid service was subscribed to and properly activated, and that necessary cellular service and GPS coverage are available.

Canceling the alarm To cancel the alarm:

Disarming tow-away alarm To prevent triggering the tow-away alarm, switch off the tow-away alarm feature be- fore towing the vehicle, or when parking on a surface subject to movement, such as a ferry or auto train.

In the “Controls in detail” section you will find detailed information on how to oper- ate the equipment installed in your vehicle. If you are already familiar with the basic functions of your vehicle, this section will be of particular interest to you. To quickly familiarize yourself with the ba- sic functions of the vehicle, refer to the “Getting started” section of this manual. The corresponding page numbers are giv- en at the beginning of each segment.

SmartKey

Your vehicle comes supplied with two SmartKeys, each with remote control and a removable mechanical key. The locking tabs for the mechanical key portion of the two SmartKeys are a differ- ent color to help distinguish each SmartKey unit. The SmartKey provides an extended oper- ating range. To prevent theft, however, it is advisable to only unlock the vehicle when you are in close proximity to it. The SmartKey centrally locks and unlocks: 앫 the doors 앫 the trunk 앫 the fuel filler flap

Selective setting If you frequently travel alone, you may wish to reprogram the SmartKey so that pressing Œ only unlocks the driver’s door and the fuel filler flap. 왘 Press and hold buttons Œ and ‹ simultaneously for about 5 seconds un- til battery check lamp 5 flashes twice. The SmartKey will then function as fol- lows:

If you can no longer lock or unlock the vehicle with the SmartKey, then either the batteries in the SmartKey are dis- charged, the SmartKey is malfunction- ing or the vehicle battery is drained. 앫 Check the batteries in the

SmartKey and replace them if nec- essary (컄 page 376).

앫 Use the mechanical key to unlock the driver’s door (컄 page 372) and the trunk (컄 page 373).

If the batteries are checked within sig- nal range of the vehicle, pressing the button ‹ or Œ will lock or unlock the vehicle accordingly.

Unlocking and opening the trunk You can unlock and open the trunk sepa- rately. A minimum height clearance of 6.3 ft (1.90 m) is required to open the trunk lid. 왘 Press and hold button Š until trunk

unlocks and begins to open.

The trunk lid swings open upwards au- tomatically. Always make sure that there is sufficient overhead clearance. Vehicles with trunk opening/closing system*: To stop the opening proce- dure, press button Š. The trunk lid stops moving.

Loss of SmartKey or mechanical key If you lose a SmartKey or mechanical key, you should do the following: 왘 Have the SmartKey deactivated by an

authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

왘 Report the loss of the SmartKey or the

mechanical key immediately to your car insurance company.

왘 If necessary, have the mechanical lock

replaced.

Your authorized Mercedes-Benz Center will be glad to supply you with a replace- ment.

SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO*

Vehicles equipped with KEYLESS-GO come with two SmartKeys with KEYLESS-GO, each with remote control and a removable mechanical key. The locking tabs for the mechanical key portion of the two SmartKeys with KEYLESS-GO are a different color to help distinguish each SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO unit. The KEYLESS-GO function is integrated into the SmartKey. On these vehicles, the validity of the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is checked every time you grasp an outside door handle. KEYLESS-GO start/stop button (컄 page 35), you can only turn it off again with this button, even if you have put the SmartKey in the starter switch in the meantime. This does not apply if, after starting, the gear selector lever is still in position P and the SmartKey is then inserted in the starter switch. The SmartKey will then have priority over the KEYLESS-GO function and the vehicle’s electrical system will operate accord- ing to the position of the SmartKey in the starter switch, even stopping the engine.

앫 If the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is positioned farther away from the vehi- cle, the system may no longer recog- nize the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO. The vehicle then cannot be locked or the engine started via the KEYLESS-GO system.

앫 If the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is re- moved from the vehicle while the igni- tion is switched on (e.g. if passenger exits the vehicle with the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO), the message

KEY NOT RECOGNIZED will appear in the multifunction display while driving off. Find the SmartKey or change its present location immediately (e.g. place it on the front passenger seat or insert it in shirt pocket).

앫 Remember that the engine can be started by anyone with a SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO that is left inside the vehicle. If you leave the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO behind when exiting and locking the vehicle, the message

KEY STILL IN VEHICLE will appear in the multifunction display.

If the vehicle has been parked for more than 72 hours, you must pull an outside door handle in order to activate the KEYLESS-GO function.

Loss of the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO If you lose your SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO or mechanical key you should do the following: 왘 Have the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO

deactivated by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

Opening the doors from the inside

You can open a locked door from the in- side. Open door only when conditions are safe to do so.

If door was locked, locking knob 1 will move up.

If you open a door, the windows on that side of the vehicle will lower slightly. The windows close again when you close the door.

i If the vehicle has previously been locked with the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO*, opening a door from the inside will trigger the anti-theft alarm system. To cancel the alarm, do one of the fol- lowing: 앫 Insert the SmartKey in the starter

switch.

Opening the trunk

Opening the trunk from the outside A minimum height clearance of 6.3 ft (1.90 m) is required to open the trunk lid. The trunk lock button is located in the rear license plate recess.

When activated, the trunk lid opens to approximately the height of the roof edge. 왘 Activate the limiting opening height of

trunk lid using the control system (컄 page 163).

Opening the trunk from the inside You can open the trunk from the inside if the vehicle is stationary. A minimum height clearance of 6.3 ft (1.90 m) is required to open the trunk lid. The remote trunk opening/closing* switch is located on the driver’s door.

Trunk emergency release

Power closing assist for doors and trunk lid

It is not necessary to slam the door or trunk lid closed. A pneumatic power-as- sisted mechanism draws doors and trunk lid closed quietly and automatically once door and trunk lid has been latched. When the pneumatic power-assisted mechanism has stopped, doors and/or trunk can be re-opened.

Warning!

To prevent possible personal injury, always keep hands and fingers away from the door or trunk opening when closing a door or the trunk. Be especially careful when small chil- dren are around.

In case of danger, pull the inside or outside door handle, or press the trunk lid lock.

To prevent personal injury, never actuate the closing assist mechanism by tampering with the door or trunk lid latch.

Automatic central locking

The doors and the trunk automatically lock when the ignition is switched on and the wheels are turning at speeds of approxi- mately 9 mph (15 km/h) or more. You can open a locked door from the in- side. Open door only when conditions are safe to do so.

The doors unlock automatically after an accident if the force of the impact ex- ceeds a preset threshold. The vehicle locks automatically when the ignition is switched on and the wheels are turning at vehicle speeds of approximately 9 mph (15 km/h) or more. You could therefore lock yourself out when the vehicle 앫 is pushed or towed 앫 is on a test stand

You can deactivate the automatic locking using the control system (컄 page 162).

Locking and unlocking from the inside

You can lock or unlock the doors and the trunk from inside using the central locking or unlocking switch. This can be useful, for example, if you want to lock the vehicle be- fore starting to drive. The fuel filler flap cannot be locked or un- locked with the central locking or unlock- ing switch, respectively.

If the vehicle was previously locked with the central locking switch 1: 앫 While in the global remote control mode, the vehicle is unlocked com- pletely when a door is opened from the inside.

Easy-entry/exit feature

This feature allows for easier entry into and exit from the vehicle. When entering and exiting the vehicle, the driver’s seat is in its maximum forward position and the steer- ing wheel is in its uppermost position. The easy-entry/exit feature can be activat- ed or deactivated in the CONVENIENCE sub- menu of the control system (컄 page 163).

Warning!

You must make sure no one can become trapped or injured by the moving steering wheel and driver’s seat when the easy-en- try/exit feature is activated.

To cancel seat/steering wheel movement, do one of the following: 앫 Press seat adjustment switch

(컄 page 38).

앫 Move steering column stalk

(컄 page 42).

앫 Press one of the memory position but-

tons or the memory button M (컄 page 123).

For safety reasons, the driver’s seat will not return to its last set position with the easy-entry/exit feature activated if the system recognizes the last set posi- tion as an extreme forward position. In- stead, the driver’s seat will remain at or move to a factory-set maximum for- ward position. To again fully return the driver’s seat to your last set position or to memory position, adjust the seat to the desired position or press and hold the respective memory position button (컄 page 123).

With the easy-entry/exit feature activated and depending on your selection, the steering wheel tilts upwards and/or the driver’s seat moves a few inches to the rear when you: 앫 remove the SmartKey from the starter

If the current position for the steering wheel is in the uppermost tilt position, the steering wheel will no longer be able to move upward when the easy-entry/exit feature is activated. If the current seat position falls into a factory-set position range and the sys- tem recognizes the current seat posi- tion to be rearward enough for easy entry and exit, the driver’s seat will not move to the rear when the easy-entry/ exit feature is activated. The adjustment procedure is briefly in- terrupted when the engine is started.

Removing and installing front seat head restraints

Front seat head restraints

For information on head restraint adjust- ment, see “Seats” (컄 page 37).

Warning!

For your protection, drive only with properly positioned head restraints.

Adjust head restraint so that the center of the head restraint supports the back of the head at eye level. This will reduce the poten- tial for injury to the head and neck in the event of an accident or similar situation.

Do not drive the vehicle without the seat head restraints. Head restraints are intend- ed to help reduce injuries during an acci- dent.

Tilt the seat backrest to the rear for easier removal and installation of the head restraints.

Lumbar support

Multicontour seats*

You can adjust the contour of the seat’s lumbar support to help enhance support to your spine. The thumbwheels for the driver’s and front passenger’s seat are located on the outer side of the seat.

The multicontour seat has inflatable air cushions built into the seat backrest to provide additional lumbar and side sup- port. The seat backrest cushion height and cur- vature can be adjusted with switches on the right side of the seat after switching on ignition.
