VEHICLE STORAGE If you are leaving your vehicle dormant for more than 21 days you may want to take steps to protect your battery. You may: • Remove fuse #27 in the Intelligent Power Module • Or, disconnect the negative cable from the battery. • Anytime you store your vehicle, or keep it out of service (i.e. vacation) for two weeks or more, run the air conditioning system at idle for about five minutes in the fresh air and high blower setting. This will ensure adequate system lubrication to minimize the possibility of compressor damage when the system is started again. If a bulb needs to be replaced, visit your authorized dealer or refer to the applicable Service Manual. 382 MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE BULB REPLACEMENT High Intensity Discharge Headlights (HID) — If Equipped The headlights are a type of high voltage discharge tube. High voltage can remain in the circuit even with the headlight switch off and the key removed. Because of this, you should not attempt to service a headlight bulb yourself. If a headlight bulb fails, take your vehicle to an authorized dealer for service. WARNING! A transient high tension occurs at the bulb sockets of High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights when the headlight switch is turned ON. It may cause serious electrical shock or electrocution if not serviced prop- erly. See your authorized dealer for service. NOTE: On vehicles equipped with High Intensity Dis- charge Headlights (HID), when the headlights are turned on, there is a blue hue to the lights. This diminishes and becomes more white after approximately 10 seconds, as the system charges. Headlight 1. Open the hood. 2. Turn the low or high beam bulb one–quarter turn counterclockwise to remove from housing. MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE 383 3. Disconnect the electrical connector and replace the bulb. CAUTION! Do not touch the new bulb with your fingers. Oil contamination will severely shorten bulb life. If the bulb comes in contact with any oily surface, clean the bulb with rubbing alcohol. 1 — High Beam Bulb 2 — Low Beam Bulb 3 — Turn Signal Bulb 384 MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE Front Turn Signal 1. Open the hood. 2. Turn the turn signal bulb one–quarter turn counter- clockwise to remove from housing. 1 — High Beam Bulb 2 — Low Beam Bulb 3 — Turn Signal Bulb 3. Disconnect the electrical connector and replace the bulb. CAUTION! Do not touch the new bulb with your fingers. Oil contamination will severely shorten bulb life. If the bulb comes in contact with any oily surface, clean the bulb with rubbing alcohol. Front Fog Light 1. Reach behind the front fascia from under the vehicle. 2. Turn the front fog light bulb one–quarter turn coun- terclockwise to remove from housing. 3. Disconnect the electrical connector and replace bulb. CAUTION! Do not touch the new bulb with your fingers. Oil contamination will severely shorten bulb life. If the bulb comes in contact with any oily surface, clean the bulb with rubbing alcohol. Rear Tail, Stop, Turn Signal, And Backup Lights 1. Raise the liftgate. 2. Remove the two Torx fasteners. MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE 385 386 MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE 3. Squeeze the socket assembly tabs to remove it from the housing. Center High-Mounted Stop Light (CHMSL) 1. Remove the two screws securing the CHMSL. 3 — Back-Up Light Bulb 1 — Tail/Stop Light Bulb 2 — Tail/Turn Signal Bulb 4. Pull the bulb to remove it from the socket. 5. Replace the bulb, reinstall the socket, and reattach the light assembly. 2. Twist the bulb socket to remove from the CHMSL housing. 3. Pull the bulb out of the socket. 4. Replace the bulb, reinstall the socket and reattach the CHMSL. These and all other maintenance services in- cluded in this manual, should be done to provide best vehicle performance and reliability. More frequent main- tenance may be needed for vehicles in severe operating conditions, such as dusty areas and very short trip driving. Inspection and service should also be done anytime a malfunction is suspected. NOTE: Maintenance, replacement or repair of the emis- sions control devices and systems on your vehicle may be performed by any automotive repair establishment or individual using any automotive part that has been certified pursuant to U.S. EPA or in the State of Califor- nia, California Air Resources Board regulations. Information Center MAINTENANCE SCHEDULES The oil change indicator system will remind you that it is time to take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance. On Electronic Vehicle (EVIC) equipped vehicles “Oil Change Required” will be dis- played in the EVIC and a single chime will sound, indicating that an oil change is necessary. Based on engine operation conditions the oil change indicator message will illuminate, this means that service is required for your vehicle. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles (805 km). NOTE: • The oil change indicator message will not monitor the time since the last oil change. The specific grade rating assigned by the tire’s manufacturer in each category is shown on the sidewall of the tires on your vehicle. All passenger car tires must conform to Federal safety requirements in addition to these grades. Treadwear The Treadwear grade is a comparative rating, based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course. For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and one-half times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100. The relative performance of tires depends upon the actual conditions of their use, however, and may depart significantly from the norm due to variations in driving habits, service practices, and differences in road charac- teristics and climate. Traction Grades The Traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B, and C. These grades represent the tire’s ability to stop on wet pavement, as measured under controlled conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on straight-ahead braking traction tests, and does not include acceleration, cornering, hydroplaning, or peak traction characteristics. Temperature Grades The temperature grades are A (the highest), B, and C, representing the tire’s resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat, when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure.
