SafetyChains Always use safety chains when you tow a trailer. Make sure the chains are secured to the trailer and hitch, and that they cross under the tongue and can catch the trailer if it becomes unhitched. Leave enough slack to allow the trailer to turn corners easily, but do not let the chains drag on the ground.
Hitches Any hitch used on your vehicle must be properly bolted to the underbody, using the six threaded holes provided. A hitch and the required fluid coolers designed especially for your Odyssey can be obtained from your Honda dealer.
WeightDistributingHitch Your vehicle is designed to tow without the need for a load distributing hitch. If you wish to use one, please consult your trailer maker for proper installation and set- up. Improper set-up could degrade the handling, stability, and braking performance of your vehicle.
Towing a Trailer
SwayControl A sway control device helps minimize swaying that can occur in crosswinds and in normal and emergency driving maneuvers. If you experience swaying when pulling your trailer, consult the trailer maker for the specific type of device and how to install it properly.
AutomaticTransmissionFluid Cooler An additional ATF (automatic transmission fluid) cooler should be installed. This device will help prevent automatic transmission overheating, which could cause serious damage. The additional ATF cooler can be obtained from your dealer.

Towing a Trailer
TrailerBrakes Honda recommends that any trailer having a total weight of 1,000 lbs (450 kg) or more be equipped with its own electric or surge-type brakes.
There are two common types of trailer brakes: surge and electric. Surge brakes are common for boat trailers, since the brakes will get wet.
If you choose electric brakes, be sure they are electronically actuated. Do not attempt to tap into your vehicle’s hydraulic system. No matter how successful it may seem, any attempt to attach trailer brakes to your vehicles hydraulic system will lower braking effectiveness and create a potential hazard.
See your trailer dealer or rental agency for more information on installing electric brakes.

Trailer lights and equipment must comply with federal, state, provincial, territorial, and local regulations. Check with your local trailer dealer or rental agency for the requirements in the area where you plan to tow, and use only equipment designed for your vehicle.
Your vehicle is equipped with a connector to install an optional trailer lighting connector that mates with your vehicle. You can get this optional connector from your dealer.
Refer to the above illustration for wiring information.
2011 Odyssey10/07/17 10:53:50 31TK8600_598
If you use a non-Honda trailer lighting harness and converter, you can get the connector and pins that mate with the connector in your vehicle from your dealer.
Since lighting and wiring vary by trailer type and brand, you should have a qualified technician install a suitable connector between the vehicle and the trailer. Improper equipment or installation can cause damage to your vehicle’s electrical system and affect your vehicle warranty.
SpareTires
When towing a trailer, we
recommend that you carry a full-size
spare wheel and tire for your vehicle
and trailer. If you use the compact
spare tire that came with your
vehicle, it could adversely affect
vehicle handling. See page

Remember to unhitch the trailer before changing a flat. Ask your trailer sales or rental agency where and how to store the trailer’s spare tire.
Towing a Trailer
AdditionalTowingEquipment Many states and Canadian provinces/territories require special outside mirrors when towing a trailer. Even if they don’t, you should install special mirrors if you cannot clearly see behind you, or if the trailer creates a blind spot.
Ask your trailer sales or rental agency if any other items are recommended or required for your towing situation.

Towing a Trailer
Pre-Tow Checklist When preparing to tow, and before driving away, be sure to check the following:
The vehicle has been properly serviced, and the suspension, cooling system, and lights are in good operating condition. The trailer has been properly serviced and is in good condition. All weights and loads are within limits. The hitch, safety chains, and any other attachments are secure.
594
All items in or on the trailer are properly secured and cannot shift while you drive. Your vehicle tires and spare are properly inflated, and the trailer tires and spare are inflated as recommended by the trailer maker. The lights and brakes on your vehicle and the trailer are working properly.
Driving Safely With a Trailer The added weight, length, and height of a trailer will affect your vehicle’s handling and performance, so driving with a trailer requires some special driving skills and techniques.
For your safety and the safety of others, take time to practice driving maneuvers before heading for the open road, and follow the guidelines below.
TowingSpeedsandGears Drive slower than normal in all driving situations, and obey posted speed limits for vehicles with trailers. Use the D position when towing a trailer on level roads. Do not exceed 55 mph (88 km/h). At higher speeds, the trailer may sway or affect vehicle handling.
2011 Odyssey10/07/17 10:54:10 31TK8600_600
Towing a Trailer, Towing Your Vehicle
MakingTurnsandBraking Make turns more slowly and wider than normal. The trailer tracks a smaller arc than your vehicle, and it can hit or run over something the vehicle misses. Allow more time and distance for braking. Do not brake or turn suddenly as this could cause the trailer to jackknife or turn over.
DrivingonHills When climbing hills, closely watch your temperature gauge. If it nears the red mark, turn the air conditioning off, reduce speed and, if necessary, pull to the side of the road to let the engine cool.
If the automatic transmission shifts frequently while going up a hill, shift to D3 or D4 depending on models.
If you must stop when facing uphill, use the foot brake or parking brake. Do not try to hold the vehicle in place by pressing on the accelerator, as this can cause the automatic transmission to overheat.
When driving down hills, reduce your speed and shift down to L. Do not ‘‘ride’’ the brakes, and remember, it will take longer to slow down and stop when towing a trailer.
HandlingCrosswindsandBuffeting Crosswinds and air turbulence caused by passing trucks can disrupt your steering and cause the trailer to sway. When being passed by a large vehicle, keep a constant speed, and steer straight ahead. Do not try to make quick steering or braking corrections.
BackingUp Always drive slowly and have someone guide you when backing up. Grip the of the steering wheel, then turn the wheel to the left to get the trailer to move to the left, and turn the wheel right to move the trailer to the right.
bottom
Parking Follow all normal precautions when parking, including putting the transmission in Park and firmly setting the parking brake. Also, place wheel chocks at each of the trailer’s tires.

Important Maintenance Precautions If you have the required service done but do not reset the display, or reset the display without doing the service, the system will not show the correct maintenance intervals. This can lead to serious mechanical problems because you will no longer have an accurate record of when maintenance is needed.
Your authorized Honda dealer knows your vehicle best and can provide competent, efficient service.
However, service at a dealer is not mandatory to keep your warranties in effect. Maintenance may be done by any qualified service facility or person who is skilled in this type of automotive service. Make sure to have the service facility or person reset the display as previously described. Keep all receipts as proof of completion, and have the person who does the work fill out your Honda Service History or Canadian Maintenance Log. Check your warranty booklet for more information.
We recommend the use of Honda parts and fluids whenever you have maintenance done. These are manufactured to the same high- quality standards as the original components, so you can be confident of their performance and durability.

Unscrew and remove the engine oil fill cap on top of the valve cover. Pour in the oil slowly and carefully so you do not spill. Clean up any spills immediately. Spilled oil could damage components in the engine compartment.
614
Reinstall the engine oil fill cap, and tighten it securely. Wait a few minutes, and recheck the oil level on the engine oil dipstick. Do not fill above the upper mark; you could damage the engine.
Recommended Engine Oil
API CERTIFICATION SEAL
Oil is a major contributor to your
engine’s performance and longevity.
Always use a premium-grade 0W-20
detergent oil displaying the API
Certification Seal. This seal indicates
the oil is energy conserving, and that
it meets the American Petroleum
Institute’s latest requirements.
2011 Odyssey10/07/17 10:56:30 31TK8600_620
Honda Motor Oil is the preferred 0W-20 lubricant for your vehicle. It is highly recommended that you use Honda Motor Oil in your vehicle for optimum engine protection. Make sure the API Certification Seal says ‘‘For Gasoline Engines’’.
Ambient Temperature
The oil viscosity or weight is provided on the container’s label. 0W-20 oil is formulated for year- round protection of your vehicle to improve cold weather starting and fuel economy.
Adding Engine Oil
Synthetic Oil You may use a synthetic motor oil if it meets the same requirements given for a conventional motor oil: it displays the API Certification Seal, and it is the proper weight. You must follow the oil and filter change intervals shown on the odometer/ trip meter display or on the multi- information display.
Engine Oil Additives Your vehicle’s engine does not require any oil additives. Additives may adversely affect engine or transmission performance and durability.

OIL FILTER
WASHER
1.
2.
Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature, then shut it off.
Open the hood, and remove the engine oil fill cap. Remove the oil drain bolt and washer from the bottom of the engine. Drain the oil into an appropriate container.
3.
Remove the oil filter, and let the remaining oil drain. A special wrench (available from your dealer) is required.
Make sure the oil filter gasket is not stuck to the contacting surface of the engine. If it is, remove it before installing a new oil filter.
Always change the oil and filter according to the maintenance messages shown on the odometer/ trip meter display or on the multi- information display. The oil and filter collect contaminants that can dam- age your engine if they are not removed regularly.
Changing the oil and filter requires special tools and access from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle should be raised on a service station- type hydraulic lift for this service. Unless you have the knowledge and proper equipment, you should have this maintenance done by a skilled technician.

Engine Coolant
Adding Engine Coolant
RESERVE TANK
MAX
MIN
If the coolant level in the reserve tank is at or below the MIN line, add coolant to bring it up to the MAX line. Inspect the cooling system for leaks.
618
If the reserve tank is completely empty, you should also check the coolant level in the radiator.
Removing the radiator cap while the engine is hot can cause the coolant to spray out, seriously scalding you.
Always let the engine and radiator cool down before removing the radiator cap.
Always use Honda Long-life Anti- freeze/Coolant Type 2. This coolant is pre-mixed with 50 percent antifreeze and 50 percent distilled water. Never add straight antifreeze or plain water.
If Honda antifreeze/coolant is not available, you may use another major-brand non-silicate coolant as a temporary replacement. Make sure it is a high-quality coolant recommended for aluminum engines. Continued use of any non-Honda coolant can result in corrosion, causing the cooling system to malfunction or fail. Have the cooling system flushed and refilled with Honda antifreeze/coolant as soon as possible.

RADIATOR CAP
FILLER NECK
Fill up to here
1.
When the radiator and engine are cool, relieve any pressure in the cooling system by turning the radiator cap counterclockwise, without pressing down.
2.
Remove the radiator cap by pushing down and turning counterclockwise.
3.
The coolant level should be up to the base of the filler neck. Add coolant if it is low.
Pour the coolant slowly and carefully so you do not spill. Clean up any spill immediately; it could damage components in the engine compartment.
Engine Coolant
4.
Put the radiator cap back on, and tighten it fully.
5.
Pour coolant into the reserve tank. Fill it to halfway between the MAX and MIN marks. Put the cap back on the reserve tank.
Do not add any rust inhibitors or other additives to your vehicle’s cooling system. They may not be compatible with the coolant or engine components.

Windshield Washers
Check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir at least monthly during normal use. This reservoir supplies the windshield and rear window washers.
Check the fluid level by removing the cap and looking at the level gauge attached to the cap.
LEVEL GAUGE
OnCanadianmodels: level indicator comes on when the level is low (see page

620
Fill the reservoir with a good-quality windshield washer fluid. This increases the cleaning capability and prevents freezing in cold weather.
When you refill the reservoir, clean the edges of the windshield wiper blades with windshield washer fluid on a clean cloth. This will help to condition the blade edges.
Do not use engine antif reeze or a vinegar/water solution in the windshield washer reservoir. Antif reeze can damage your vehicle’s paint, while a vinegar/water solution can damage the windshield washer pump. Use only commercially-available windshield washer f luid.

Automatic Transmission Fluid
Always use Honda ATF DW-1
(automatic transmission fluid).
GUIDE
6.
Insert the dipstick all the way back into the transmission securely as shown in the illustration.
Make sure the rubber cap on the dipstick fits in the dipstick guide and that you push the dipstick in all the way.
The transmission should be drained and refilled with new fluid when this service is indicated on a maintenance message on the information display or on the multi-information display (depending on models).
If you are not sure how to add fluid, contact your dealer.
UPPER MARK LOWER MARK
Touring models
5.
If the level is below the lower mark, add fluid into the dipstick tube to bring it to the level between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick.
Pour the fluid slowly and carefully so you do not spill any. Clean up any spill immediately; it could damage components in the engine compartment.
622
Use only Honda ATF DW-1 (automatic transmission f luid). Do not mix with other transmission f luids. Using transmission f luid other than Honda ATF DW-1 may cause deterioration in transmission operation and durability, and could result in damage to the transmission. Damage resulting f rom the use of transmission f luid other than Honda ATF DW-1 is not covered by the Honda new vehicle warranty.

Check the brake fluid level in the reservoirs monthly.
OnTouringmodels You will also see the ‘‘BRAKE FLUID LOW’’ message on the multi- information display when the brake fluid level is low.
Independent of the Maintenance Minder information, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.
Always use Honda Heavy Duty
Brake Fluid DOT 3. If it is not
available, you should use only DOT 3
or DOT 4 fluid, from a sealed
container, as a temporary
replacement.
Using any non-Honda brake fluid can cause corrosion and decrease the life of the system. Have the brake system flushed and refilled with Honda Heavy Duty Brake Fluid DOT 3 as soon as possible.
Brake fluid marked DOT 5 is not compatible with your vehicle’s braking system and can cause extensive damage.
Brake Fluid
MAX

High Voltage Discharge Tube Headlights OnTouringEliteandCanadianTouring models The low beam headlight bulbs are a type of high voltage discharge tube. High voltage can remain in the circuit even with the light switch off and the key removed. Because of this, you should not attempt to examine or change a low beam headlight bulb yourself. If a low beam headlight bulb fails, take your vehicle to a dealer to have it replaced.
Replacing a Headlight Bulb Your vehicle has halogen headlight bulbs. When replacing a bulb, handle it by its base, and protect the glass from contact with your skin or hard objects. If you touch the glass, clean it with denatured alcohol and a clean cloth.
Halogen headlight bulbs get very hot when lit. Oil, perspiration, or a scratch on the glass can cause the bulb to overheat and shatter.
