Canada This light should come on brieﬂy when you turn the ignition key to ON. If it does not come on then, have it ﬁxed so it will be ready to warn you if there is a problem. If the light comes on while you are driving, pull off the road and stop carefully. You may notice that the pedal is harder to push, or the pedal may go closer to the ﬂoor. It may take longer to stop. If the light is still on, have the vehicle towed for service. See Anti-Lock Brake System Warning Light on page 220 and Towing Your Vehicle on page 337. {CAUTION: Your brake system may not be working properly if the brake system warning light is on. Driving with the brake system warning light on can lead to an accident. If the light is still on after you have pulled off the road and stopped carefully, have the vehicle towed for service. 219 Anti-Lock Brake System Warning Light The ABS warning light should come on brieﬂy when you turn the ignition key to ON. If the light does not come on then, have it ﬁxed so it will be ready to warn you if there is a problem. Traction Control System (TCS) Warning Light United States Canada United States Canada Your vehicle may have an Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) warning light. If it does, the light should come on for a few seconds when you turn the ignition key to ON. If the ABS warning light stays on longer than normal after you have started your engine, turn the ignition off. If the light comes on and stays on when you are driving, stop as soon as possible and turn the ignition off. Then start the engine again to reset the system. If the light still stays on, or comes on again while you are driving, the ABS needs service and you do not have anti-lock brakes. 220 Your vehicle may have a Traction Control System (TCS) warning light. The TCS warning light may come on for the following reasons: (cid:127) If you turn the TCS off by pressing the TRAC OFF button located in the instrument panel switchbank the TCS warning light will come on and stay on. To turn the system back on, press the button again. The TCS warning light should go off. See Traction Control System (TCS) on page 310 for more information. If there is an engine-related and brake system problem that is speciﬁcally related to traction control, the TCS will turn off and the TCS warning light will come on. (cid:127) If the TCS warning light comes on and stays on for an extended period of time when the system is turned on, your vehicle needs service. Engine Coolant Temperature Gage United States Canada This gage shows the engine coolant temperature. If the gage pointer moves near the “H”, your engine is too hot! It means that your engine coolant has overheated. If you have been operating your vehicle under normal driving conditions, you should pull off the road, stop your vehicle and turn off the engine as soon as possible. See Engine Overheating on page 378. 221 Malfunction Indicator Lamp Service Engine Soon Light in the United States or Check Engine Light in Canada United States Canada Your vehicle has a computer which monitors operation of the fuel, ignition, and emission control systems. This system is called OBD II (On-Board Diagnostics-Second Generation) and is intended to assure that emissions are at acceptable levels for the life of the vehicle, helping to produce a cleaner environment. The SERVICE ENGINE SOON or check engine light comes on to indicate that there is a problem and service is required. Malfunctions often will be indicated by the system before any problem is apparent. This may 222 If you keep driving your vehicle prevent more serious damage to your vehicle. This system is also designed to assist your service technician in correctly diagnosing any malfunction. Notice: with this light on, after awhile, your emission controls may not work as well, your fuel economy may not be as good, and your engine may not run as smoothly. This could lead to costly repairs that may not be covered by your warranty. Notice: Modiﬁcations made to the engine, transaxle, exhaust, intake, or fuel system of your vehicle or the replacement of the original tires with other than those of the same Tire Performance Criteria (TPC) can affect your vehicle’s emission controls and may cause this light to come on. Modiﬁcations to these systems could lead to costly repairs not covered by your warranty. This may also result in a failure to pass a required Emission Inspection/Maintenance test. See Accessories and Modiﬁcations on page 354. This light should come on, as a check to show you it is working, when the ignition is on and the engine is not running. If the light does not come on, have it repaired. This light will also come on during a malfunction in one of two ways: (cid:127) Light Flashing — A misﬁre condition has been detected. A misﬁre increases vehicle emissions and may damage the emission control system on your vehicle. Diagnosis and service may be required. (cid:127) Light On Steady — An emission control system malfunction has been detected on your vehicle. Diagnosis and service may be required. If the Light Is Flashing The following may prevent more serious damage to your vehicle: (cid:127) Reducing vehicle speed (cid:127) Avoiding hard accelerations (cid:127) Avoiding steep uphill grades (cid:127) If you are towing a trailer, reduce the amount of cargo being hauled as soon as it is possible If the light stops ﬂashing and remains on steady, see “If the Light Is On Steady” following. If the light continues to ﬂash, when it is safe to do so, stop the vehicle. Find a safe place to park your vehicle. Turn the key off, wait at least 10 seconds and restart the engine. If the light remains on steady, see “If the Light Is On Steady” following. If the light is still ﬂashing, follow the previous steps, and see your dealer for service as soon as possible. If the Light Is On Steady You may be able to correct the emission system malfunction by considering the following: Did you recently put fuel into your vehicle? If so, reinstall the fuel cap, making sure to fully install the cap. See Filling the Tank on page 359. The diagnostic system can determine if the fuel cap has been left off or improperly installed. A loose or missing fuel cap will allow fuel to evaporate into the atmosphere. A few driving trips with the cap properly installed should turn the light off. 223 Did you just drive through a deep puddle of water? If so, your electrical system may be wet. The condition will usually be corrected when the electrical system dries out. A few driving trips should turn the light off. Have you recently changed brands of fuel? If so, be sure to fuel your vehicle with quality fuel. See Gasoline Octane on page 356. Poor fuel quality will cause your engine not to run as efficiently as designed. You may notice this as stalling after start-up, stalling when you put the vehicle into gear, misﬁring, hesitation on acceleration, or stumbling on acceleration. (These conditions may go away once the engine is warmed up.) This will be detected by the system and cause the light to turn on. If you experience one or more of these conditions, change the fuel brand you use. It will require at least one full tank of the proper fuel to turn the light off. If none of the above steps have made the light turn off, your dealer can check the vehicle. Your dealer has the proper test equipment and diagnostic tools to ﬁx any mechanical or electrical problems that may have developed. Emissions Inspection and Maintenance Programs Some state/provincial and local governments have or may begin programs to inspect the emission control equipment on your vehicle. Failure to pass this inspection could prevent you from getting a vehicle registration. Here are some things you need to know in order to help your vehicle pass an inspection: Your vehicle will not pass this inspection if the SERVICE ENGINE SOON or check engine light is on or not working properly. Your vehicle will not pass this inspection if the OBD (on-board diagnostic) system determines that critical emission control systems have not been completely diagnosed by the system. The vehicle would be considered not ready for inspection. 224 This can happen if you have recently replaced your battery or if your battery has run down. The diagnostic system is designed to evaluate critical emission control systems during normal driving. This may take several days of routine driving. If you have done this and your vehicle still does not pass the inspection for lack of OBD system readiness, your dealer can prepare the vehicle for inspection. Fuel Gage If your fuel is low, the warning message in the message center will come on. See Low Fuel Warning Message on page 232. Your fuel gage tells you about how much fuel you have left when the ignition is on. Here are four things that some owners ask about. All these things are normal and do not indicate that anything is wrong with the fuel gage. (cid:127) At the gas station, the gas pump shuts off (cid:127) before the gage reads full. It takes a little more (or less) fuel to ﬁll up than the gage reads. For example, the gage reads half full, but it took more (or less) than half of the tank’s capacity to ﬁll it. United States Canada When the indicator nears empty, you still have a little fuel left, but you should get more soon. (cid:127) The gage pointer may move while cornering, braking or speeding up. (cid:127) The gage may not indicate empty when the ignition is turned off. Message Center The message center is located at the top of the instrument panel cluster in between the tachometer and speedometer. It gives you important safety and maintenance facts. 225 Passenger Seatbelt Reminder Message Service Traction System Warning Message If your vehicle has the passenger sensing system, this message reminds the passenger to buckle their seatbelt. This message will come on and a chime will sound when the following conditions exist: (cid:127) The ignition is ON, (cid:127) (cid:127) a passenger is detected by the passenger the passenger’s seatbelt is not buckled, sensing system. This light and chime will be repeated if the ignition is on, the vehicle is in motion, the passenger is still unbuckled and the passenger airbag is enabled. You should buckle your seatbelt. If the passenger’s seatbelt is already buckled, this message and chime will not come on. 226 United States Canada If your vehicle has the Traction Control System (TCS) and this message is displayed when you are driving, there may be a problem with your TCS. Your vehicle may need service. When this message is displayed, the TCS will not limit wheel spin. Adjust your driving accordingly. If there is an engine-related and brake system problem that is speciﬁcally related to traction control, the TCS will turn off and the warning message will come on. If the TCS warning message comes on and stays on for an extended period of time when the system is turned on, your vehicle needs service. Traction Active Message Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Message United States Canada If your vehicle has the Traction Control System (TCS), the TRACTION ACTIVE message will appear when the TCS is limiting wheel spin. You may feel or hear the system working, but this is normal. Slippery road conditions may exist if this message appears, so adjust your driving accordingly. This message will stay on for a few seconds after the TCS stops limiting wheel spin. United States Canada This message will come on when your engine gets too hot. If this message comes on, it means that your engine coolant has overheated. If you have been operating your vehicle under normal driving conditions, you should pull off the road, stop your vehicle and turn off the engine as soon as possible. See Engine Overheating on page 378. 227 Charging System Indicator Message Reduced Engine Power Message The charging system battery symbol will come on in the message center when you turn on the ignition as a check to show you it is working. It will remain on as long as the engine is not running. It should go out once the engine is running. If it stays on, or comes on while you are driving, you may have a problem with the charging system. It could indicate that you have problems with a generator drive belt, or another electrical problem. Have it checked right away. Driving while this indicator appears in the message center could drain your battery. If you must drive a short distance with the message on, be certain to turn off all your accessories, such as the radio and air conditioner. 228 United States Canada If your vehicle has this feature, this message will appear in the message center when a noticeable reduction in the vehicle’s engine performance is detected. This message will also appear when your vehicle is in overheated engine protection operating mode. See Engine Overheating on page 378 for more information. If this message comes on and stays on, see your dealer. Low Oil Pressure Message United States Canada Your vehicle may have a low oil pressure warning message. Your oil pressure message lets you know when you may have a problem with your engine oil pressure. When the engine is running and this message appears, the engine oil level may be too low. There may also be another problem causing low oil pressure. {CAUTION: Do not keep driving if the oil pressure is low. If you do, your engine can become so hot that it catches ﬁre. You or others could be burned. Check your oil as soon as possible and have your vehicle serviced. Notice: Lack of proper engine oil maintenance may damage the engine. The repairs would not be covered by your warranty. Always follow the maintenance schedule in this manual for changing engine oil. 229 Change Engine Oil Message Door Ajar Warning Message United States Canada United States Canada When this message comes on and stays on after you have started the engine, it means that service is required for your vehicle. See Scheduled Maintenance on page 475 and Engine Oil on page 365 for more information. This message will come on when the ignition is turned to ON or START and the driver’s or passenger’s door is open. Rear Hatch Ajar Warning Message United States Canada This message will come on when the ignition is turned to ON or START and the liftgate is open. 230 Check Gas Cap Message If your vehicle has this message, it will come on when the ignition is turned to ON or START and the gas cap is open. Your PASS-Key® III system, however, is not working properly and must be serviced by your dealer. Your vehicle is not protected by the PASS-Key® III system at this time. See PASS-Key® III on page 124 for more information. Low Washer Fluid Warning Message PASS-Key® III Security Message United States Canada If you are ever driving and this message comes on and stays on, you will be able to restart your engine if you turn it off. United States Canada Your vehicle may have a low washer ﬂuid warning message. If your washer ﬂuid is low, this warning message will come on and stay on until you add washer ﬂuid. See Windshield Washer Fluid on page 388 for adding washer ﬂuid instructions. If the warning message is still on after adding ﬂuid, you need to reset the warning message. To reset the warning message, turn the ignition off and then back on. If the message stays on, see your dealer. 231 Low Fuel Warning Message Low Brake Fluid Warning Message United States Canada United States Canada If your fuel is low, the warning message will come on and stay on until you add fuel. If the warning message is still on after adding fuel, you need to reset the warning message. To reset the warning message, turn the ignition off and then back on. If the message stays on, see your dealer. If your brake ﬂuid is low, the warning message will come on and stay on until you add brake ﬂuid. The brake system warning light will also be illuminated. If this message appears, the brakes need attention. You should have your vehicle serviced immediately. See Brake System Warning Light on page 219 and Brakes on page 389. If the warning message is still on after adding ﬂuid, you may need to reset the warning message. To reset the warning message, turn the ignition off and then back on. If the message stays on, see your dealer right away. 232 Service Vehicle Soon Message Program Mode Message United States Canada United States Canada This light will come on if your vehicle has certain non-emission related problems. For example, if the entire electrical system fails to send and receive messages from the vehicle’s components, this message will come on. These problems may not be obvious and may affect vehicle performance or durability. Consult a qualiﬁed dealership for necessary repairs to maintain top vehicle performance. If you receive this message, your vehicle is in program mode. If your vehicle has the Driver Information Center (DIC), you are ready to begin programming your vehicle’s customization features. See DIC Vehicle Personalization on page 240 for more information. 233 Remote Keyless Entry Transmitter Battery Low Warning Message Parking Lamp Warning Message United States Canada If you receive this message, the battery in the remote keyless entry needs to be replaced. See “Battery Replacement” under Remote Keyless Entry System Operation on page 111 for instructions. United States Canada If this message appears, one or both of the vehicle’s parking lamp bulbs needs replacement. See Bulb Replacement on page 399 for bulb replacement instructions. 234 The DIC is capable of displaying English or French. To change the language, press and hold the MODE button until the language you want is displayed. The MODE button is located on the instrument panel, to the left of the steering column. Release the button to set your choice. See DIC Controls and Displays on page 236 to change the display from English to metric. The DIC contains a compass display to show you which direction the vehicle is driving. See DIC Compass on page 238 for more information. Highbeam Out Warning Message United States Canada If this message appears, one or both of the vehicle’s high-beam headlamp bulbs needs replacement. See Bulb Replacement on page 399 for more information. Driver Information Center (DIC) If your vehicle has a Driver Information Center (DIC), the display is located on the instrument panel cluster in the tachometer gage. The DIC will show information about the vehicle and the surroundings. 235 DIC Controls and Displays When the ignition is turned to ON or START, the DIC will display the following: The DIC will be in the last mode displayed when the engine was turned off. To select a different mode, press MODE. The display will cycle through its options at each press of MODE. BUICK: BUICK will be displayed for three seconds. DRIVER #: This message will be displayed for another three seconds after BUICK appears in the display. The driver number corresponds to the numbers, 1 or 2, on the back of the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitters. This display lets the driver know which driver’s RKE transmitter is being used and the driver’s customization features. The DIC controls are located to the left of the steering column on the instrument panel. MODE: This button lets you cycle through the options on the display. SET: This button is used to select and set the options to your preference. The DIC will always display the compass reading and the outside temperature. If the temperature is below 38°F (3°C), the temperature reading will toggle between displaying the temperature and the word ICE for two minutes. AVG ECONOMY (Average Economy): Average fuel economy is viewed as a long term approximation of your overall driving conditions. To learn the average fuel economy from a new starting point, press and hold the SET button while the average fuel economy is displayed on the DIC. The average fuel economy will set to zero. 236 INST ECONOMY (Instant Economy): Instant fuel economy reﬂects the fuel economy that the vehicle has right now. Instant fuel economy varies with your driving conditions, such as acceleration, braking and the grade of the road being traveled. Unlike average fuel economy, instant fuel economy cannot be reset. AVG SPEED (Average Speed): The average speed display will show your average speed from when you ﬁrst started your vehicle. To reset the average speed, press and hold the SET button while the average speed is displayed on the DIC and until the speed resets to your current speed. FUEL RANGE: The fuel range is an estimated distance that your vehicle can travel on the remaining fuel. The fuel economy used to calculate the range is based on your driving history since the last reset of the average speed. FUEL USED: The fuel used display will show you how much fuel has been used since the last time it was reset. To reset the fuel used to zero, press and hold the SET button while the fuel used is displayed on the DIC and until the display goes to zero. OIL LIFE LEFT HOLD SET TO RESET: This message displays the current percentage of the oil life by the engine oil life system. Be careful not to reset this display other than when the oil has been changed. See “How to Reset the Engine Oil Life System” under Engine Oil Life System on page 368 for more information. In addition to the engine oil life system monitoring the oil life, additional maintenance is recommended in the Maintenance Schedule in this manual. See Scheduled Maintenance on page 475 and Engine Oil on page 365. 237 TIRE PRESSURE: The check tire pressure system can alert you to a large change in the pressure of one tire. If the tire pressure is normal, TIRE PRESSURE NORMAL will display. If the tire pressure is low, LOW TIRE PRESSURE will display. You must begin driving before the system will detect a low tire pressure condition. See Check Tire Pressure System on page 414. USE SET TO SELECT ENGLISH METRIC: You can use this display to select English or metric. Press the SET button to toggle between English or metric. The DIC, the odometer, the trip odometer and head-up display will change. A Canadian odometer and trip odometer will remain in metric units only. OFF: No driver information will be displayed in this mode. If the DIC is left in this mode for more than three seconds, the display will turn off. Press the MODE button to start the DIC. DIC Compass Your vehicle has a compass in the Driver Information Center (DIC). Compass Variance Compass variance is the difference between magnetic north and geographic north. In some areas of the country, the difference is great enough to cause the compass to give false readings. If this occurs, the compass must be recalibrated. Compass Calibration If the calibration required symbol, or C, appears in the compass, you must manually put the compass into the calibration mode. To enter this mode, do the following: 1. Turn the ignition on and press the MODE button until CALIBRATE COMPASS displays. 2. Press and hold the SET button for longer than three seconds. 238 zone number for compass variance will be displayed in place of the zone symbol. Press the SET button to select the zone number from the graphic shown to select the current area of the country in which you are driving. PRESS SET TO CALIBRATE COMPASS: After selecting your zone, press the MODE button and this will be displayed on the DIC. Press and hold the SET button and complete three 360 degree turns in an area free from large metal objects at a speed no faster than 5 mph (8 km/h). The following two messages will toggle in the display until you calibrate the compass: (cid:127) DRIVE VEHICLE IN CIRCLE (cid:127) CALIBRATING COMPASS When calibration is complete, the vehicle direction will be displayed instead of the C symbol. 239 ZONE - - PRESS & HOLD SET TO CHANGE: This display mode will appear when you are manually calibrating the system. When the compass is being recalibrated for the ﬁrst time, the zone symbol will be displayed. When the compass is being recalibrated any time after that, the current DIC Vehicle Personalization The DIC is used to program the choices of two drivers. The drivers are recognized as DRIVER 1 or DRIVER 2 in the DIC display. You will let the DIC know which driver you are by using your Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter. Each RKE transmitter was pre-programmed to belong to DRIVER 1 or DRIVER 2 and the corresponding numbers, 1 or 2, appear on the back of the transmitters. Each transmitter may be programmed differently for each driver’s preferences (lights, doors, horn, or activate the programmed radio stations for driver 1 or driver 2) using your RKE transmitter. After you press the LOCK button on your RKE transmitter and the ignition key is in ON, the DIC will display the identiﬁed driver number. The vehicle will also recall the vehicle customization features that were last programmed to correspond to your RKE transmitter. If you unlock your vehicle using your key instead of your RKE transmitter, the DIC will not change drivers and your vehicle will recall the information from the last transmitter used. If your vehicle does not have a DIC, you do not have available the vehicle customization features using the RKE transmitter. Entering Programming Mode To program features, your vehicle must be in the programming mode. Do the following: 1. Turn the ignition key to ON with the vehicle in PARK (P). To avoid excessive drain on the battery, it is recommended that the headlamps are turned off. 2. Press and release the MODE button, scrolling through the DIC messages, until PERSONALIZATION PRESS SET TO BEGIN is displayed. 3. Press the SET button and TO SELECT DRIVER PRESS REMOTE LOCK will appear. Press the LOCK button on the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter. This identiﬁes which RKE transmitter is being programmed by displaying PERSONALIZATION FOR DRIVER 1 or DRIVER 2. 240 United States Canada 4. The program mode message will appear in the message center as an indication that your vehicle is ready to begin programming. 5. Follow the instructions given by the DIC. Headlamp Exit Delay This feature allows you to customize the headlamps and parking lamps. This feature can be programmed to one of the following modes: OFF: The headlamps and parking lamps will not turn on at the same instant that the ignition is turned to OFF. 15: The headlamps and parking lamps will stay on for 15 seconds when the ignition is turned to OFF. 30: The headlamps and parking lamps will stay on for 30 seconds when the ignition is turned to OFF. 60: The headlamps and parking lamps will stay on for 60 seconds when the ignition is turned to OFF. Your vehicle was originally programmed to 30 second mode. The mode may have been changed since then. To determine the current mode, or to change the mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Press the MODE button until HEADLMP EXIT DELAY appears in the DIC. 3. Press the SET button until the arrow is before the mode you prefer. The mode you selected is now set. You can either exit programming mode by following the instructions later in this section or program the next feature available on your vehicle. 241 Your vehicle was originally programmed to ON. The mode may have been changed since then. To determine the current mode, or to change the mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Press the MODE button until INTERIOR LIGHTING DELAY appears on the DIC. 3. Press the SET button until the arrow is before ON or OFF. The mode you selected is now set. You can either exit programming mode by following the instructions later in this section or program the next feature available on your vehicle. Interior Lighting Delay The interior lighting delay feature can be programmed to one of the following modes: OFF: This feature will not illuminate the interior of your vehicle when all of the doors are closed. ON: This feature will continue to illuminate the interior lamps for 25 seconds after all doors have been closed so that you can ﬁnd the ignition and buckle your safety belt at night. Interior lighting delay will not occur while the ignition is in ON. After 25 seconds, the interior lamps will fade out. The lamps will fade out before the 25 seconds if one of the following occurs: (cid:127) The ignition is turned to ON (cid:127) All doors are locked using the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter (cid:127) There is no occupant activity detected for an illumination period of 25 seconds 242 Interior Lighting On The interior lighting on feature can be programmed to one of the following modes: KEY OUT: The interior lamps will come on for about 25 seconds whenever you remove the key from the ignition. DOOR: The interior lamps will come on for about 25 seconds when any door is opened. Interior lighting on will not occur while the ignition is in ON. After 25 seconds, the interior lamps will fade out. The lamps will fade out before the 25 seconds if one of the following occurs: (cid:127) The ignition is turned to ON (cid:127) LOCK is pressed on the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter (cid:127) There is no occupant activity detected for an illumination period of 25 seconds Your vehicle was originally programmed to DOOR. The mode may have been changed since then. To determine the current mode, or to change the mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Press the MODE button until INTERIOR LIGHTING ON appears on the DIC. 3. Press the SET button until the arrow is before KEY OUT or DOOR. The mode you selected is now set. You can either exit programming mode by following the instructions later in this section or program the next feature available on your vehicle. 243 Auto Door Lock/Unlock The doors will automatically lock when the vehicle is shifted out of PARK (P). For automatic unlocking, you can program your vehicle to one of the following modes: OFF: When the shift lever is put in PARK (P), the doors will not unlock automatically. DRIVER: When the shift lever is put in PARK (P), only the driver’s door will unlock. ALL: When the shift lever is put in PARK (P), all doors will unlock. Your vehicle was originally programmed to ALL. The mode may have been changed since then. To determine the current mode, or to change the mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Make sure that the AUTO DOOR LOCK feature is programmed to ON. 3. Press the MODE button until AUTO DOOR UNLOCK appears on the DIC. 4. Press the SET button until the arrow is before OFF, DRIVER or ALL. 244 If the auto door unlock feature has been programmed to DRIVER or ALL, the automatic door unlock feature can also be programmed to one of the following modes: PARK: Unlock when the shift lever is put in PARK (P). KEY OUT: Unlock when the ignition key is removed. Your vehicle was originally programmed to PARK. The mode may have been changed since then. To determine the current mode, or to change the mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Follow the instructions for programming AUTO DOOR UNLOCK to DRIVER or ALL listed previously. 3. Press the MODE button until AUTO DOOR UNLOCK/PARK KEYOUT appears on the DIC. 4. Delayed Locking The delayed locking feature can be programmed to one of the following modes: ON: Lock your vehicle using the power door lock switch or the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter while any door is opened, you will hear three chimes and the doors will not lock. Five seconds after the last door is closed, all doors will lock. Once delayed locking is programmed to ON, you can do the following: (cid:127) Cancel the delayed locking by pressing unlock using the power door lock switch or by fully inserting the key in the ignition (cid:127) Override the delayed locking feature by pressing lock immediately using the power door lock switch (cid:127) Let the delayed locking feature complete the locking of the vehicle OFF: The doors will always lock immediately when you lock the doors using the power door lock switch or press LOCK on the RKE transmitter. Your vehicle was originally programmed to ON. The mode may have been changed since then. To determine the current mode, or to change the mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Press the MODE button until DELAYED LOCKING appears on the DIC. 3. Press the SET button until the arrow is before ON or OFF. The mode you selected is now set. You can either exit programming mode by following the instructions later in this section or program the next feature available on your vehicle. 245 Remote Door Unlock The remote door unlock feature can be programmed to one of the following modes: DRIVER/ALL: With the ﬁrst press of UNLOCK on the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter, the driver’s door will unlock, and with the second press of UNLOCK, within ﬁve seconds of the ﬁrst press, all passenger’s doors will unlock. ALL: All doors will unlock with every press of UNLOCK on the RKE transmitter. Your vehicle was originally programmed to ALL. The mode may have been changed since then. To determine the current mode, or to change the mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Press the MODE button until REMOTE DOOR UNLOCK appears on the DIC. 3. Press the SET button until the arrow is before DRIVER/ALL or ALL. The mode you selected is now set. You can either exit programming mode by following the instructions later in this section or program the next feature available on your vehicle. Unlock Feedback The unlock feedback feature can be programmed to one of the following modes: LIGHTS: This mode does the following: (cid:127) During the day, when the ignition is in OFF and UNLOCK on the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter is pressed, the headlamps and parking lamps will ﬂash. (cid:127) During the night, when the ignition is in OFF, the headlamps and parking lamps will be activated for 30 seconds when UNLOCK is pressed on the RKE transmitter. If you would like to change the amount of time the lamps stay on, change the headlamp exit delay feature. OFF: The headlamps and parking lamps will not ﬂash when UNLOCK is pressed on the RKE transmitter. 246 Your vehicle was originally programmed to LIGHTS. The mode may have been changed since then. To determine the current mode, or to change the mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Follow the instructions for programming HEADLMP EXIT DELAY earlier in this section, to make sure which mode it is programmed to. 3. Press the MODE button until UNLOCK FEEDBACK appears on the DIC. 4. Press the SET button until the arrow is before LIGHTS or OFF. 5. Press the MODE button until you have determined which mode you prefer, to follow with the personalization. The mode you selected is now set. You can either exit programming mode by following the instructions later in this section or program the next feature available on your vehicle. Lock Feedback The lock feedback feature can be programmed to one of the following modes: OFF: When LOCK is pressed on the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter, the headlamps and parking lamps will not ﬂash and the horn will not sound. LIGHTS: When LOCK is pressed on the RKE transmitter, the headlamps and parking lamps will ﬂash brieﬂy. LIGHTS and HORN: When LOCK is pressed a second time on the RKE transmitter within ﬁve seconds, the headlamps and parking lamps will ﬂash brieﬂy and the horn will sound. 247 OFF: No memory seat position will be recalled when you press the UNLOCK button on the RKE transmitter. To determine the mode to which your vehicle is programmed or to program your vehicle to a different mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Press the MODE button until SEAT RECALL appears on the DIC. 3. Press the SET button until the arrow is before ON or OFF. If the seat recall feature has been programmed to ON, the seat recall feature can also be programmed to one of the following modes: MEMORY: The position recalled will be the memory driving position. Your vehicle was originally programmed to LIGHTS and HORN. The mode may have been changed since then. To determine the current mode, or to change the mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Press the MODE button until LOCK FEEDBACK appears on the DIC. 3. Press the SET button until the arrow is before OFF, LIGHTS or LIGHTS and HORN. The mode you selected is now set. You can either exit programming mode by following the instructions later in this section or program the next feature available on your vehicle. Seat Recall The seat recall feature can be programmed to one of the following modes: ON: The previously programmed memory seat position will be recalled when the UNLOCK button is pressed on the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter. 248 EXIT: The position recalled will be the previously programmed exit position. To determine the mode to which your vehicle is programmed or to program your vehicle to a different mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Follow the instructions for programming SEAT RECALL to ON listed previously. 3. Press the MODE button until RECALL POSITION appears on the DIC. 4. Press the SET button until the arrow is before MEMORY or EXIT. The mode you selected is now set. You can either exit programming mode by following the instructions later in this section or program the next feature available on your vehicle. Tilt Mirror The tilt mirror feature can be programmed to one of the following modes: ON: The passenger’s side outside rearview mirror will tilt down towards the curb when the vehicle is shifted to REVERSE (R) and returns to its previous position when the vehicle is shifted out of REVERSE (R). OFF: The mirror will not tilt. To determine the mode to which your vehicle is programmed or to program your vehicle to a different mode, do the following: 1. Follow the instructions for “Entering Programming Mode” listed previously. 2. Press the MODE button until TILT MIRROR appears on the DIC. 3. Press the SET button until the arrow is before ON or OFF. The mode you selected is now set. You can exit programming mode by following the instructions next in this section. 249 Exiting Programming Mode To exit programming mode, do one of the following: (cid:127) Shift out of PARK (P). (cid:127) Turn the ignition key out of ON. (cid:127) Do not program any commands for one minute while in the programming mode. The programming mode message will turn off to let you know that you are no longer in the programming mode. Once you have reached the end of the personalization features, PERSONALIZATION SELECTION DONE will appear brieﬂy. Then PRESS SET TO EXIT MODE TO CONTINUE will appear. Pressing SET will exit you out of the DIC. Pressing MODE will take you to the beginning of personalization. Audio System(s) Determine which radio your vehicle has and then read the pages following to familiarize yourself with its features. Driving without distraction is a necessity for a safer driving experience. See Defensive Driving on page 302. By taking a few moments to read this manual and get familiar with your vehicle’s audio system, you can use it with less effort, as well as take advantage of its features. While your vehicle is parked, set up your audio system by presetting your favorite radio stations, setting the tone and adjusting the speakers. Then, when driving conditions permit, you can tune to your favorite stations using the presets and steering wheel controls if the vehicle has them. 250 {CAUTION: This system provides you with a far greater access to audio stations and song listings. Giving extended attention to entertainment tasks while driving can cause a crash and you or others can be injured or killed. Always keep your eyes on the road and your mind on the drive — avoid engaging in extended searching while driving. Keeping your mind on the drive is important for safe driving. For more information, see Defensive Driving on page 302. Here are some ways in which you can help avoid distraction while driving. While your vehicle is parked: (cid:127) Familiarize yourself with all of its controls. (cid:127) Familiarize yourself with its operation. (cid:127) Set up your audio system by presetting your favorite radio stations, setting the tone, and adjusting the speakers. Then, when driving conditions permit, you can tune to your favorite radio stations using the presets and steering wheel controls if the vehicle has them. Notice: Before adding any sound equipment to your vehicle, such as an audio system, CD player, CB radio, mobile telephone, or two-way radio, make sure that it can be added by checking with your dealer. Also, check federal rules covering mobile radio and telephone units. If sound equipment can be added, it is very important to do it properly. Added sound equipment may interfere with the operation of your vehicle’s engine, radio, or other systems, and even damage them. Your vehicle’s systems may interfere with the operation of sound equipment that has been added. Your vehicle has a feature called Retained Accessory Power (RAP). With RAP, the audio system can be played even after the ignition is turned off. See Retained Accessory Power (RAP) on page 129 for more information. 251 Setting the Time Press and hold H until the correct hour appears on the display. AM will appear for morning hours. Press and hold M until the correct minute appears on the display. The time can be set with the ignition on or off. To synchronize the time with an FM station broadcasting Radio Data System (RDS) information, press and hold H and M at the same time until TIME UPDATED appears on the display. If the time is not available from the station, NO UPDATE will appear on the display. RDS time is broadcast once a minute. After tuning to an RDS broadcast station, it may take a few minutes for the time to update. Radio with CD Radio Data System (RDS) The audio system has a Radio Data System (RDS). RDS features are available for use only on FM stations that broadcast RDS information. 252 With RDS, your radio can do the following: (cid:127) Seek to stations broadcasting the selected type of programming (cid:127) Receive announcements concerning local and national emergencies (cid:127) Display messages from radio stations (cid:127) Seek to stations with traffic announcements This system relies upon receiving speciﬁc information from these stations and only works when the information is available. In rare cases, a radio station can broadcast incorrect information that can cause the radio features to work improperly. If this happens, contact the radio station. While the radio is tuned to an RDS station, the station name or call letters display instead of the frequency. RDS stations can also provide the time of day, a program type (PTY) for current programming, and the name of the program being broadcast. XM™ Satellite Radio Service XM™ is a satellite radio service that is based in the 48 contiguous United States and Canada. XM™ offers a large variety of coast-to-coast channels including music, news, sports, talk, traffic/weather (U.S. subscribers), and children’s programming. XM™ provides digital quality audio and text information that includes song title and artist name. A service fee is required in order to receive the XM™ service. For more information, contact XM™; In the U.S. at www.xmradio.com or call 1-800-852-XMXM (9696) or in Canada at www.xmradio.ca or call 1-877-GET-XMSR (438-9677). Playing the Radio PWR (Power): Push this knob to turn the system on and off. VOL (Volume): Turn this knob to increase or to decrease the volume. 253 SCV (Speed-Compensated Volume): With SCV, your audio system adjusts automatically to make up for road and wind noise as you drive. To get to SCV, push the TUNE/AUDIO knob repeatedly until SPEED VOL (volume) displays. Turn the TUNE/AUDIO knob to select MIN (minimum), MED (medium), or MAX (maximum). Each higher setting allows for more volume compensation at faster vehicle speeds. Then, as you drive, SCV automatically increases the volume, as necessary, to overcome noise at any speed. The volume level should always sound the same to you as you drive. To turn SCV off, press SCV until OFF displays. DISP (Display): Press this button to switch the display between the radio station frequency and the time. Press this button to display the time when the ignition is turned off. For RDS, press the DISP (display) button to change what appears on the display while using RDS. The display options are station, RDS station frequency, PTY (program type), and the name of the program (if available). For XM™ (if equipped), press the DISP button while in XM™ mode to retrieve four different categories of information related to the current song or channel: Artist, Song Title, Category or PTY, Channel Number/Channel Name. To change the default on the display, press the DISP button until the desired display appears, then hold the button until the display ﬂashes. The selected display becomes the default. Finding a Station BAND: Press this button to switch between FM1, FM2, or AM, or XM1 or XM2 (if equipped). The selection displays. TUNE: Turn this knob to select radio stations. ©SEEK ¨: Press the right or the left arrow to go to the next or to the previous station and stay there. To scan stations, press and hold either SEEK arrow for two seconds until SCAN displays. The radio goes to a station, plays for a few seconds, then goes to the next station. Press either SEEK arrow again to stop scanning. 254 To scan preset stations, press and hold either SEEK arrow for more than four seconds until PSCAN and the preset number displays. You will hear two beeps. The radio goes to the ﬁrst preset station stored on the pushbuttons, plays for a few seconds, then goes to the next preset station. Press either SEEK arrow again to stop scanning presets. The radio only seeks and scans stations with a strong signal that are in the selected band. Setting Preset Stations Up to 30 stations (six FM1, six FM2, and six AM, six XM1 and six XM2 (if equipped), can be programmed on the six numbered pushbuttons, by performing the following steps: 1. Turn the radio on. 2. Press BAND to select FM1, FM2, or AM, or XM1 or XM2. 3. Tune in the desired station. 4. Press EQ to select the equalization. 5. Press and hold one of the six numbered pushbuttons until you hear a beep. When that numbered pushbutton is pressed, the station that was set, returns and the equalization that was selected is stored for that pushbutton. 6. Repeat the steps for each pushbutton. Setting the Tone (Bass/Midrange/Treble) AUDIO: Push and release this knob until BASS, MID (midrange), or TREBLE displays. Then turn the AUDIO knob to increase or to decrease the tone. If a station is weak or has static, decrease the treble. To adjust bass, midrange, or treble to the middle position, select BASS, MID, or TREBLE. Then push and hold AUDIO for more than two seconds until you hear a beep. BASS and a zero, MID and a zero, or TREBLE and a zero displays. 255 To adjust both tone controls and both speaker controls to the middle position, ﬁrst exit the audio mode by waiting ﬁve seconds without making any changes. Then push and hold the AUDIO knob for more than two seconds until you hear a beep. ALL CENTERED displays. EQ (Equalizer): Press this button to select customized equalization settings designed for country/western, jazz, talk, pop, rock, and classical. Adjusting the Speakers (Balance/Fade) AUDIO: To adjust the balance between the right and the left speakers, push and release the AUDIO knob until BAL (balance) displays. Then turn the AUDIO knob to move the sound toward the right or the left speakers. A bar graph with indicators shows how the sound is balanced. To adjust the fade between the front and the rear speakers, push and release the AUDIO knob until FADE displays. Then turn the AUDIO knob to move the sound toward the front or the rear speakers. A bar graph with indicators shows how the sound is balanced. 256 To adjust balance or fade to the middle position, select BAL or FADE. Then push and hold the AUDIO knob for more than two seconds until you hear a beep. The indicator is centered on the display. To adjust both tone controls and both speaker controls to the middle position, ﬁrst exit the audio mode by waiting ﬁve seconds without making any changes. Then push and hold the AUDIO knob for more than two seconds until a beep sounds. ALL CENTERED displays. Finding a Program Type (PTY) Station (RDS and XM™) To select and ﬁnd a desired PTY perform the following: 1. Press P-TYP to activate program type select mode. The PTY symbol displays. 2. Turn the AUDIO knob to select a PTY. 3. Once the desired PTY displays, press either SEEK arrow to select the PTY to go to the PTY’s ﬁrst station. 4. To go to another station within that PTY while the PTY is displayed, press either SEEK arrow once. If the PTY is not displayed, press either SEEK arrow twice to display the PTY and then to go to another station. 5. Press P-TYP to exit the program type, select mode. If the PTY times out and is no longer displays, go back to Step 1. If both PTY and TRAF (traffic) are on, the radio searches for stations with the selected PTY and traffic announcements. SCAN: Scan the stations within a PTY by performing the following: 1. Press P-TYP to activate program type select mode. The PTY symbol displays. 2. Turn the AUDIO knob to select a PTY. 3. Once the desired PTY is displayed, press and hold either SEEK arrow. The radio begins scanning the stations in the PTY. 4. Press either SEEK arrow to stop at a station. If both PTY and TRAF are on, the radio scans for stations with the selected PTY and traffic announcements. BAND (Alternate Frequency): Alternate frequency lets the radio switch to a stronger station with the same program type. To turn alternate frequency on, press and hold BAND for two seconds. AF ON displays. The radio can switch to stations with a stronger frequency. To turn alternate frequency off, press and hold BAND again for two seconds. AF OFF displays. The radio does not switch to other stations. This function does not apply for XM™ Satellite Radio Service. 257 RDS Messages ALERT!: Alert warns of local or national emergencies. When an alert announcement comes on the current radio station, ALERT! displays. You will hear the announcement, even if the volume is low or a CD is playing. If a CD is playing, play stops during the announcement. Alert announcements cannot be turned off. ALERT! is not affected by tests of the emergency broadcast system. This feature is not supported by all RDS stations. INFO (Information): If the current station has a message, INFO displays. Press this button to see the message. The message can display the artist, song title, call in phone numbers, etc. If the entire message is not displayed, parts of the message appears every three seconds. To scroll through the message, press and release the INFO button. A new group of words displays after each press of the button. Once the complete message has displayed, INFO disappears from the display until another new message is received. The last message can be displayed by pressing the INFO button. The last message can be viewed until a new message is received or you tune to a different station. 258 TRAF (Traffic): If TRAF displays, the tuned station broadcasts traffic announcements. Press this button to receive the traffic announcement from the station. TRAF displays between brackets. You receive a traffic announcement when the tuned radio station broadcasts one. If the station does not broadcast traffic announcements, press the TRAF button and the radio seeks to a station that does. When a station that broadcasts traffic announcements is found, the radio stops seeking and TRAF displays between brackets. If no station is found that broadcasts traffic announcements, NO TRAFFIC displays. If only the brackets display, press the TRAF button to remove the brackets or use the TUNE knob or the SEEK arrows to go to a station that broadcasts traffic announcements. If no station is found that broadcasts traffic announcements, NO TRAFFIC displays. The radio plays the traffic announcements if the volume is low. The radio interrupts the play of a CD if the last tuned station broadcasts traffic announcements and the brackets are displayed. This function does not apply to XM™ Satellite Radio Service. Radio Messages CAL (CALIBRATE): The audio system has been calibrated for your vehicle from the factory. If CAL appears on the display it means that the radio has not been conﬁgured properly for your vehicle and must be returned to your dealer for service. LOCKED: This message displays when the THEFTLOCK® system has locked up. Take the vehicle to your dealer for service. If any error occurs repeatedly or if an error cannot be corrected, contact your dealer. Radio Messages for XM™ Only See XM Radio Messages on page 276 later in this section for further detail. Playing a CD Insert a CD partway into the slot, label side up. The player pulls it in and the CD should begin playing. If you want to insert a CD while the ignition or the radio is off, ﬁrst press the eject or DISP button. When a CD is inserted, the CD symbol displays. As each new track starts to play, the track number displays. If the ignition or radio is turned off with a CD in the player, it stays in the player. When the ignition or radio is turned on, the CD starts playing where it stopped, if it was the last selected audio source. The CD player can play the smaller 3 inch (8 cm) single CDs with an adapter ring. Full-size CDs and the smaller CDs are loaded in the same manner. If playing a CD-R, the sound quality can be reduced due to CD-R quality, the method of recording, the quality of the music that has been recorded, and the way the CD-R has been handled. There can be an increase in skipping, difficulty in ﬁnding tracks, and/or difficulty in loading and ejecting. If these problems occur, check the bottom surface of the CD. If the surface of the CD is damaged, such as cracked, broken, or scratched, the CD will not play properly. If the surface of the CD is soiled, see Care of Your CDs and DVDs on page 298 for more information. If there is no apparent damage, try a known good CD. 259 Do not add any label to a CD, it could get caught in the CD player. If a CD is recorded on a personal computer and a description label is needed, try labeling the top of the recorded CD with a marking pen. Notice: If you add any label to a CD, insert more than one CD into the slot at a time, or attempt to play scratched or damaged CDs, you could damage the CD player. When using the CD player, use only CDs in good condition without any label, load one CD at a time, and keep the CD player and the loading slot free of foreign materials, liquids, and debris. If an error appears on the display, see “CD Messages” later in this section. 1s(Reverse): Press and hold this pushbutton to reverse quickly within a track. You will hear sound at a reduced volume. Release this pushbutton to play the passage. The elapsed time of the track displays. 2 \(Forward): Press and hold this pushbutton to advance quickly within a track. You will hear sound at a reduced volume. Release this pushbutton to play the passage. The elapsed time of the track displays. 260 4 RDM (Random): Press this pushbutton to hear the tracks in random, rather than sequential, order. Press RDM again to turn off random play. EQ (Equalizer): Press EQ to select an equalization setting while playing a CD. The equalization is set whenever a CD is played. See “EQ” listed previously for more information. ©SEEK ¨: Press the left arrow to go to the start of the current track if it has played more than eight seconds. Press the right arrow to go to the next track. If either arrow is held or pressed more than once, the player continues moving backward or forward through the CD. To scan tracks, press and hold either SEEK arrow for two seconds until SCAN displays and you will hear a beep. The CD goes to the next track, plays for a few seconds, then goes to the next track. The sound mutes and SCAN and the track number displays while scanning. The CD only scans forward. Press either SEEK arrow again to stop scanning. DISP (Display): Press this button to see which track is playing. Press it again within ﬁve seconds to see how long it has been playing. To change the default on the display, track or elapsed time, press this button until you see the display you want, then hold the button until the display ﬂashes. The selected display is now the default. BAND: Press this button to listen to the radio when a CD is playing. The inactive CD remains safely inside the radio for future listening. CD: Press this button to play a CD when listening to the radio. Z(Eject): Press this button to eject the CD. The CD can be removed. If the CD is not removed, after 25 seconds, the CD automatically pulls back into the player. If the CD is pushed back into the player, before the 25 second time period is complete, the player senses an error and tries to eject the CD several times before stopping. Eject can be activated with either the ignition or radio off. CDs can be loaded with the ignition or radio off, if this button is pressed ﬁrst. CD Messages CHECK CD: If this message displays, it could for one of the following reasons: (cid:127) It is very hot. When the temperature returns to normal, the CD should play. (cid:127) You are driving on a very rough road. 3When the road becomes smoother, the CD should play. (cid:127) The CD is dirty, scratched, wet, or upside down. (cid:127) The air is very humid. If so, wait about an hour and try again. (cid:127) There could have been a problem while burning the CD. (cid:127) The label could be caught in the CD player. If the CD is not playing correctly, for any other reason, try a known good CD. If any error occurs repeatedly or if an error cannot be corrected, contact your dealer. If the radio displays an error message, write it down and provide it to your dealer when reporting the problem. 261 Listening to a DVD Your vehicle may have a Rear Seat Entertainment System (RSE), see Rear Seat Entertainment System on page 277 for more information. If your vehicle has this system and a DVD is playing, the DVD symbol displays indicating that the DVD is available and can be listened to through the vehicles speakers. To listen to the DVD, press the CD button until RSE displays. The current source stops and the DVD sound comes through the speakers. To stop listening to the DVD, press the CD button to play a CD, or press the BAND button to select a different source. When the RSE system is turned off, the radio displays RSE OFF and the radio returns to the last selected audio source that you were listening to. Radio with Six-Disc CD Radio Data System (RDS) The audio system has a Radio Data System (RDS). RDS features are available for use only on FM stations that broadcast RDS information. The radio only seeks stations with a strong signal that are in the selected band. sSCAN t: Press and hold either SCAN arrow for two seconds until SC displays and a beep sounds. The radio goes to a station, plays for a few seconds, then goes to the next station. Press either SCAN arrow again to stop scanning. To scan preset stations, press and hold either SCAN arrow for more than four seconds. PRESET SCAN displays and a double beep sounds. The radio goes to the ﬁrst preset station stored on the pushbuttons, plays for a few seconds, then goes to the next preset station. Press either SCAN arrow again to stop scanning presets. The radio only scans stations with a strong signal that are in the selected band. RCL (Recall): Press this knob to switch the display between the radio station frequency and the time. When the ignition is off, press this knob to display the time. For RDS, press the RCL knob to change what appears on the display while using RDS. The display options are station name, RDS station frequency, PTY, and the name of the program (if available). For XM™ (if equipped), press the RCL knob while in XM mode to retrieve four different categories of information related to the current song or channel: Artist, Song Title, Category or PTY, Channel Number/Channel Name. To change the default on the display, press the RCL knob until you see the display you want, then hold the knob until the display ﬂashes. The selected display becomes the default. Finding a Station BAND: Press this button to switch between FM1, FM2, AM, or XM1 or XM2 (if equipped). The display shows the selection. TUNE: Turn this knob to select radio stations. 264 Setting Preset Stations Up to 30 stations (six FM1, six FM2, and six AM, six XM1 and six XM2 (if equipped)), can be programmed on the six numbered pushbuttons, by performing the following steps: 1. Turn the radio on. 2. Press BAND to select FM1, FM2, AM, or XM1 or XM2. 3. Tune in the desired station. 4. Press AUTO EQ to select the equalization. 5. Press and hold one of the six numbered pushbuttons until you hear a beep. When that numbered pushbutton is pressed, the station that was set, returns and the equalization that was selected is stored for that pushbutton. 6. Repeat the steps for each pushbutton. Setting the Tone (Bass/Midrange/Treble) AUDIO: Push the AUDIO knob until BASS, MID (midrange), or TREB (treble) displays. Turn the knob to increase or to decrease the tone. If a station is weak or has static, decrease the treble. To adjust bass, midrange, or treble to the middle position, select BASS, MID, or TREB and push and hold the AUDIO knob. The display level adjusts to the middle position and a beep sounds. To adjust all tone and speaker controls to the middle position, push and hold the AUDIO knob when no tone or speaker control is displayed. CENTERED displays and one beep sounds. AUTO EQ (Automatic Equalization): Press this button to select customized equalization settings designed for country, jazz, talk, pop, rock, and classical. To return to the manual mode, press the AUTO EQ button until CUSTOM displays. Then manually adjust the bass, midrange, and treble using the AUDIO knob. 265 Adjusting the Speakers (Balance/Fade) AUDIO: To adjust the balance between the right and the left speakers, push the AUDIO knob until BAL (balance) displays. Turn the knob to move the sound toward the right or the left speakers. To adjust the fade between the front and rear speakers, push and hold the AUDIO knob until FAD displays. Turn the knob to move the sound toward the front or the rear speakers. To adjust the balance and the fade to the middle position, select balance or fade and push and hold the AUDIO knob. The display level adjusts to the middle position and a beep sounds. To adjust all tone and speaker controls to the middle position, push and hold the AUDIO knob when no tone or speaker controls are displayed. CENTERED displays and one beep sounds. Finding a Program Type (PTY) Station (RDS and XM™) To select and ﬁnd a desired PTY perform the following: 1. Press the P-TYPE button to activate program type select mode. P-TYPE and the last selected PTY displays. 2. Turn the P-TYPE knob to select a PTY. 3. Once the desired PTY displays, press either SEEK arrow to select and to go to the PTY’s ﬁrst station. 4. To go to another station within that PTY while the PTY is displayed, press either SEEK arrow once. If the PTY is not displayed, press either SEEK arrow twice to display the PTY and then to go to another station. 5. Press P-TYPE to exit the program type select mode. If PTY times out and no longer displays, go back to Step 1. If both P-TYPE and TRAF are on, the radio searches for stations with the selected PTY and traffic announcements. 266 To use the PTY interrupt feature, press and hold the P-TYPE button until a beep sounds on the PTY you want to interrupt with. When selected, an asterisk appears beside that PTY on the display. You can select multiple interrupts if desired. While you are listening to a CD, the last selected RDS station interrupts play if that selected program type format is broadcast. SCAN: Scan the stations within a PTY by performing the following: 1. Press the P-TYPE button to activate program type select mode. P-TYPE and the last selected PTY displays. 2. Turn the P-TYPE knob to select a PTY. 3. Once the desired PTY displays, press and hold either SCAN arrow, and the radio begins scanning the stations in the PTY. 4. Press either SCAN arrow to stop at a station. If both P-TYPE and TRAF are on, the radio scans for stations with the selected PTY and traffic announcements. BAND (Alternate Frequency): Alternate frequency lets the radio switch to a stronger station with the same program type. To turn alternate frequency on, press and hold BAND for two seconds. AF ON displays. The radio can switch to stations with a stronger frequency. To turn alternate frequency off, press and hold BAND again for two seconds. AF OFF displays. The radio does not switch to other stations. This function does not apply for XM™ Satellite Radio Service. Setting Preset PTYs (RDS Only) These buttons have factory PTY presets. Up to 12 PTYs (six FM1 and six FM2), can be programmed on the six numbered pushbuttons, by performing the following steps: 1. Press BAND to select FM1 or FM2. 2. Press the P-TYPE button to activate program type select mode. P-TYPE and the last selected PTY displays. 3. Turn the P-TYPE knob to select a PTY. 4. Press and hold one of the six numbered pushbuttons until a beep sounds. Whenever that numbered pushbutton is pressed, the PTY that was set will return. 5. Repeat the steps for each pushbutton. 267 RDS Messages ALERT!: Alert warns of local or national emergencies. When an alert announcement comes on the current radio station, ALERT! displays. You will hear the announcement, even if the volume is low or a CD is playing. If a CD is playing, play stops during the announcement. Alert announcements cannot be turned off. ALERT! is not affected by tests of the emergency broadcast system. This feature is not supported by all RDS stations. INFO (Information): If the current station has a message, INFO displays. Press this button to see the message. The message can display the artist, song title, call in phone numbers, etc. If the entire message is not displayed, parts of the message appears every three seconds. To scroll through the message, press and release the INFO button. A new group of words displays after every press of this button. Once the complete message has displayed, INFO disappears from the display until another new message is received. The last message can be displayed by pressing the INFO button. The last message can be viewed until a new message is received or you tune to a different station. 268 TRAF (Traffic): If TRAF displays, the tuned station broadcasts traffic announcements. To receive the traffic announcement from the tuned station, press this button. TRAF displays between brackets. You receive a traffic announcement when the tuned radio station broadcasts one. If the current tuned station does not broadcast traffic announcements, press the TRAF button and the radio seeks to a station that does. When a station that broadcasts traffic announcements is found, the radio stops seeking and TRAF displays between brackets. If no station is found, NO TRAFFIC will appear on the display. If the brackets are on the display and TRAF is not, press the TRAF button to remove the brackets or use the TUNE knob or the SEEK arrows to go to a station that supports traffic announcements. If no station is found that broadcasts traffic announcements, NO TRAFFIC displays. The radio plays the traffic announcement if the volume is low. The radio interrupts the play of a CD if the last tuned station broadcasts traffic announcements and the brackets are displayed. This function does not apply to XM™ Satellite Radio Service. Radio Messages CAL ERR (Calibration Error): The audio system has been calibrated for your vehicle from the factory. If CAL ERR displays it means that the radio has not been conﬁgured properly for the vehicle and it must be returned to your dealer for service. LOCKED: This message displays when the THEFTLOCK® system has locked up. Take your vehicle to your dealer for service. If any error occurs repeatedly or if an error cannot be corrected, contact your dealer. Radio Messages for XM™ Only See XM Radio Messages on page 276 later in this section for further detail. Playing a CD If the ignition or radio is turned off, with a CD in the player, it stays in the player. When the ignition or radio is turned on, the CD starts playing where it stopped, if it was the last selected audio source. When a CD is inserted, the CD symbol appears on the CD. As each new track starts to play, the track number displays. The CD player can play the smaller 3 inch (8 cm) single CDs with an adapter ring. Full-size CDs and the smaller CDs are loaded in the same manner. If playing a CD-R, the sound quality can be reduced due to CD-R quality, the method of recording, the quality of the music that has been recorded, and the way the CD-R has been handled. There may be an increase in skipping, difficulty in ﬁnding tracks, and/or difficulty in loading and ejecting. If these problems occur, check the bottom surface of the CD. If the surface of the CD is damaged, such as cracked, broken, or scratched, the CD will not play properly. If the surface of the CD is soiled, see Care of Your CDs and DVDs on page 298 for more information. If there is no apparent damage, try a known good CD. 269 If you add any label to a CD, insert Do not add any label to a CD, it could get caught in the CD player. If a CD is recorded on a personal computer and a description label is needed, try labeling the top of the recorded CD with a marking pen. Notice: more than one CD into the slot at a time, or attempt to play scratched or damaged CDs, you could damage the CD player. When using the CD player, use only CDs in good condition without any label, load one CD at a time, and keep the CD player and the loading slot free of foreign materials, liquids, and debris. If an error appears on the display, see “CD Messages” later in this section. LOAD CD Z: Press the LOAD side of this button to load CDs into the CD player. This CD player holds up to six CDs. To insert one CD, do the following: 1. Turn the ignition on. 2. Press and release the LOAD button. 3. Wait for the light, located to the right of the slot, to turn green. 270 4. Load a CD. Insert the CD partway into the slot, label side up. The player pulls the CD in. To insert multiple CDs, do the following: 1. Turn the ignition on. 2. Press and hold the LOAD button for two seconds. A beep sounds and the light, located to the right of the slot, begins to ﬂash. 3. Once the light stops ﬂashing and turns green, load a CD. Insert the CD partway into the slot, label side up. The player pulls the CD in. 4. Once the CD is loaded, the light begins ﬂashing again. Press the LOAD button again. Once the light turns green, load the next disc. Repeat this procedure for each CD. The CD player takes up to six CDs. To load more than one CD but less than six, complete Steps 1 through 3. When ﬁnished loading CDs, the radio begins to play the last CD loaded. If more than one CD has been loaded, a number for each CD displays. Playing a Speciﬁc Loaded CD For every CD loaded, a number appears on the display. To play a speciﬁc CD, ﬁrst press the CD AUX button, then press the numbered pushbutton that corresponds to the CD. A small bar displays under the CD number that is playing and the track number also displays. If an error displays, see “CD Messages” later in this section. LOAD CD Z(Eject): Press the CD eject side of this button to eject a CD(s). A beep sounds and the indicator light ﬂashes to let you know when a CD is being ejected. REMOVE CD displays. The CD can be removed. If the CD is not removed, after 25 seconds, the CD automatically pulls back into the player. If the CD is pushed back into the player, before the 25 second time period is complete, the player senses an error and tries to eject the CD several times before stopping. Do not repeatedly press the CD eject button to eject a CD after trying to push it in manually. The player’s 25-second eject timer resets at each press of eject, causing the player to not eject the CD until the 25-second time period has elapsed. Once the player stops and the CD is ejected, remove the CD. After removing the CD, push the PWR knob off and then on again, or wait for the system to reset. This clears the CD-sensing feature and enables CDs to be loaded into the player again. { REV (Reverse): Press and hold this button to reverse quickly within a track. You will hear sound at a reduced volume. Release this button to play the passage. The elapsed time of the track displays. FWD |(Forward): Press and hold this button to advance quickly within a track. You will hear sound at a reduced volume. Release this button to play the passage. The elapsed time of the track displays. RPT (Repeat): With the repeat setting, one track or an entire CD can be repeated. 271 To use repeat, do the following: (cid:127) To repeat the track you are listening to, press and release the RPT button. RPT displays. Press RPT again to turn off repeat play. (cid:127) To repeat the CD you are listening to, press and hold the RPT button for two seconds. RPT displays. Press RPT again to turn off repeat play. RDM (Random): With the random setting, you can listen to the tracks in random, rather than sequential, order, on one CD or on all of the CDs. To use random, do one of the following: (cid:127) To play the tracks on the CD you are listening to in random order, press and release the RDM button. RANDOM ONE displays. Press RDM again to turn off random play. (cid:127) To play the tracks on all of the CDs that are loaded in random order, press and hold RDM for more than two seconds. A beep sounds and RANDOM ALL displays. Press RDM again to turn off random play. AUTO EQ (Automatic Equalization): Press AUTO EQ to select the desired equalization setting while playing a CD. The equalization is set whenever a CD is played. For more information on AUTO EQ, see “AUTO EQ” listed previously in this section. sSEEK t: Press the left arrow to go to the start of the current track, if more than ten seconds have played. Press the right arrow to go to the next track. If either arrow is held or pressed more than once, the player continues moving backward or forward through the CD. sSCAN t: To scan one CD, press and hold either SCAN arrow for more than two seconds until
