For your own safety
Maintenance and repair
Advanced technology, e.g. the use of modern materials and high-performance electronics, requires specially adapted mainte- nance and repair methods. Therefore, have cor- responding work on your BMW carried out only by a BMW center or a workshop that works according to BMW repair procedures with cor- respondingly trained personnel. If work is car- ried out improperly there is a danger of conse- quential damage and the related safety risks.<
California Proposition 65 Warning California law requires us to issue the following warning:
Engine exhaust and a wide variety of automobile components and parts,
including components found in the interior fur- nishings in a vehicle, contain or emit chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects and reproductive harm. In addition, certain fluids contained in vehicles and certain products of component wear contain or emit chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Battery posts, terminals and related accesso- ries contain lead and lead compounds. Batter- ies also contain other chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer. Wash your hands after handling. Used engine oil contains chemicals that have caused cancer in labora- tory animals. Always protect your skin by wash- ing thoroughly with soap and water.<
Parts and accessories
For your own safety, use genuine parts and accessories approved by BMW.
When you purchase accessories tested and approved by BMW and Genuine BMW Parts, you simultaneously acquire the assurance that they have been thoroughly tested by BMW to ensure optimum performance when installed on your vehicle. BMW warrants these parts to be free from defects in material and workmanship. BMW will not accept any liability for damage resulting from installation of parts and accesso- ries not approved by BMW. BMW cannot test every product made by other manufacturers to verify if it can be used on a BMW safely and without risk to either the vehi- cle, its operation, or its occupants. Genuine BMW Parts, BMW Accessories and other products approved by BMW, together with professional advice on using these items, are available from all BMW centers. Installation and operation of non-BMW approved accessories such as alarms, radios, amplifiers, radar detectors, wheels, suspension components, brake dust shields, telephones, including operation of any portable phone from within the vehicle without using an externally mounted antenna, or transceiver equipment, for instance, CBs, walkie-talkies, ham radios or similar accessories, may cause extensive dam- age to the vehicle, compromise its safety, inter- fere with the vehicle's electrical system or affect the validity of the BMW Limited Warranty. Refer to your BMW center for additional informa- tion.<
Maintenance, replacement, or repair of the emission control devices and sys- tems may be performed by any automotive repair establishment or individual using any cer- tified automotive part.<

Reporting safety defects The following applies only to vehicles owned and operated in the US. If you believe that your vehicle has a defect which could cause a crash or could cause injury or death, you should immediately inform the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in addition to notifying BMW of North America, LLC, P.O. Box 1227, Westwood, New Jersey 07675-1227, Telephone (800) 831- 1117. If NHTSA receives similar complaints, it may open an investigation, and if it finds that a safety defect exists in a group of vehicles, it may order a recall and remedy campaign. However, NHTSA cannot become involved in individual problems between you, your dealer, or BMW of North America, LLC. Indicator and warning lamps
What to do in case of a malfunction
The concept
All warning lamps and indicator lamps not yet listed are also accompanied by text messages on the Control Display. These may contain more information as to the cause of a malfunc- tion and instructions on what to do.
Sometimes, warning lamps are also accompa- nied by supplemental text messages on the Control Display that are shown immediately. Text messages that do not appear immediately are stored and can be displayed subsequently. For further information on displaying these messages later, refer to Check Control on page 67.
Indicator and warning lamps and their combina- tions are displayed in the display region 1 and in the display 2. To better differentiate between malfunctions, different symbols can be shown on the display 2. Some lights in the display region 1 are tested for proper function by briefly lighting up during starting of the engine or when the ignition is switched on.

Control Center
The Control Center groups the functions of a large number of switches. This allows these functions to be operated from a central position. The following section provides an introduction
to basic menu navigation. The control of the individual functions is described in connection with the relevant equipment.
Controls
1 Controller

3 Control Display By moving the controller 1 horizontally in four directions 4, rotating 5 and pressing 6, you can
navigate through the menus of the Control Cen- ters and adjust settings.
To avoid posing an unnecessary hazard due to inattention, both to your own vehi- cle's occupants and to other road users: never attempt to use the controls or make entries unless traffic and road conditions allow.<
Menu overview You can call up all the functions in the Control Center using five menu items.

Menu navigation As of ignition key position 1, the following mes- sage appears on the Control Display:
Confirm the message by pressing the control- ler; this opens the start menu.
Start menu
From the start menu, you can open four menus by moving the controller left, right, forward, or back. Pressing the controller opens the menu.
Opening start menu Press To open the start menu from the menu: Press the
button twice.

Displays in menu
1 In menus, you can change fields to select
the menu items they contain or to make adjustments. The current field is high- lighted.
2 Menu items are usually grouped in horizon-
tal or vertical lists.
3 In these lists, arrows indicate the possibility of accessing other menu items that are not currently visible.
4 Settings are displayed graphically, numeri-
cally, or as text.

Selecting menu items and making adjustments
Changing directly to the last menu Move the controller in the corresponding direc- tion and hold it for longer than approx. 2 sec- onds. The menu in the selected direction is opened and the last menu item selected is dis- played.
1 Selecting individual menu items: turn the
controller. The highlight moves. Menu items shown in white can be selected.
2 Activating highlighted menu items: press
the controller. New menu items are dis- played or a function is executed.
3 Changing the current field: move controller
left, right, forward, or back and release.
4 Selecting menu items: such as 1. 5 Adjusting settings: turn the controller. This causes the graphical display, numerical val- ues or text displays to change. When you change into another field or another menu, the new setting is applied.

Voice command system
The concept The voice command system allows you to con- trol operation of various vehicle systems with- out ever removing your hands from the steering wheel. Individual menu items on the Control Display can be spoken as commands. This frees you of having to use the controller. The voice command system transforms your oral commands into control signals for the selected systems and provides support in the form of instructions or questions. The voice command system uses a special microphone located in the area of the interior rearview mirror, refer to page 14.
Precondition In the Control Center, set the language that applies for the voice command system in order to enable identification of the spoken com- mands. Setting the language of the Control Center, refer to page 74.
Symbol in the Owner's Manual
{...} Say the specified commands word for word. {{...}} Indicates responses of the voice command system.
Voice commands
Activating voice command system 1. Press the
button in the center console
or on the steering wheel.
This symbol on the Control Display and
an acoustic signal tell you that the voice command system can respond to com- mands.
2. Say the command.
The text or numbers that the voice com- mand system has registered will appear on the Control Display.
