hey im noticing some noise in the left hand side of my car turning im pretty sure its bearing noise, a kit for this is about $50 from repco, bearings and seals ... so i was thinking id just do it myself seems easy enuff i was just wondering if someone could give me any ideas on just how much time it would take? and what i have to take off to get the axle out?

its an R31 AU Build skyline

1986 ...

far as i know take the breaks off rotors etc.. then what else is needed to pull the axle out?

I do know one thing, use marine grease, not the shit they give you. Marine grease for a reason...it's more water resistant than the standard stuff.

really pack the bearing really well with as much grease as possible don't just give it a light coat you have to pack as much grease as u can into the bearing or it will last u a few thousand km's as opposed to a hundred thousand like they should

mate if you don't know get someone to do it for you.. if you supply the parts should be about 50 bucks for them to do it, and take about 1.5 hrs....

If its rigid axle, I think it is, then leave wheels on, undo brake lines, undo the 4 bolts on the backing plate, and pull the thing out. It should slide out by hand. If it does not, then the splines on the axle, at the diff, could be twisted, and you will need an axle puller........

What type of car is it mate.

R33RACER
Post #12

is it front or rear wheel bearings

R33RACER
Post #13

Rear wheel should cost about $30 + gst. It is exactly the same as a holden commodore or ford set up. You need someone with a press to pull the bearings of the axle and to press them back on the axle.

Marine grease?????? crap

The bearing is pre packed you do not touch it at all.

Also the rear diff set up is OIL fed.

if its turning noise its more likely your fronts!!!

axle bearings usually use the oil from the diff.

if its IRS it may need packing.

50bucks for a 1.5 hours labour? your kiddin!!! our rate is $66 for 1 hour!!!

and if it is the rear ones i think you will get charged for more then 1 hour.

i did mine recently and it took more then a few hours!!! (had some dramas but)

r33racer which bearing shop is yours? and are you in CAPRICORN SOCIATY? cause we need another bearing supplier!

Whenever I've bought a new car, one of the first things I buy (right after the fuzzy dice and nodding dog) is a workshop manual. Not the pissy little thing that the dealer puts in the glovebox, but like a gregories manual.

I know they're harder to find for imports but they're worth their weight in gold. With a bit of patience, and reading the appropriate section 10 times before you even touch a spanner anyone can do anything at home. Of course barring the stuff that needs special tools, which this operation sounds like it requires.

This community service announcement bought to you by the letters F and K and the number 69.

how much do those books weigh???? because i recon i would rather the GOLD!!!! think of what you could buy with that gold!!!! p.s you dont need special tools to do wheel bearing!!!

DZ
p.s you dont need special tools to do wheel bearing!!!
Apparently we're talking axle bearings, not wheel bearings which I hear need to be pressed onto the axle with a benchpress.

But anyway a torque wrench could be considered a special tool. And a torque wrench is pretty important for replacing wheel bearings AFAIK.

blown13b
Post #29

nah you dont need a torque wrench or a press!!! you can feel the bearing pre-load with your hand and a spanner. and you dont need a press either you can just use a steel tube that fits over your axle. then you just have to make sure you hit it on the inside race!!!

Thats the difference between need and want.

Shit, you can replace a head gasket without a torque wrench too, but the one time I did, I had to do it again coz the head gasket shat itself a week later.

And without knowing shit about skylines (except that I want an R33) I'd guess they're pretty fussy about a couple of pounds here or there.

BUT I'm not an expert, theres just some stuff I dont like bodgy-ing.

Blown13B you can buy as many bearings of us as you want. The way you are fitting them you will be repeat business.

We are talking rear wheel WHAT PRE LOAD it is a already pre loaded bearing.

Remind me to never let you near my car. YOU are RUFF and DODGY.

You dont need a TORQUE WRENCH either. All FRONT wheel bearings are different settings.

blown13b
Post #32

hahahhaha i was just saying you dont need those tools to do the job!!!!

R33RACER
Post #33

Yeah you dont but a press is really recomened and the pre load on the rear is already pre set.

blown13b
Post #34

yeah i know!!! i was talking about the front bearings on a rearwheel drive or sometimes the rear wheels on a front wheel drive!!!!
