Who cares, imports are worth shit in New Zealand. Should have the money to pay off fines with the ludicrous prices they pay for imports, should be the same here

also i find it a bit ridiculous that it was those 18 drivers that racked up $150,000 in unpaid fines...why not just issue them with a court summons instead of making them scapegoats... rolleyes.gif new zealand sucks!

Actually it wouldnt matter the defects are all legal...... Same as here in Australia, the cops could walk right in and hand everyone defect notices even if they arent driven on the road. Why? Because they are road registered vehicles and are in a PUBLIC place. Fine would be park/drive defective vehicle. Cant get out of it either. Bit different if its at home on PRIVATE property. Even places such as service stations or car parks that have a public access can earn you a defect. A number of us a couple fo months ago got nailed at a servo in Brisbane parked up, although we hadnt moved every car bar one (Yotis's R34) copped a defect/fine. Sux to be us hey?

I'd say you'd be on the money with that comment. They would of been defected for being "road registered" and in a public place. To make matters worse - they would of been "extra illegal" for doing things to their car that are show specific such as nos bottles, over sized rims, illegally lowered, aftermarket seats & steering wheels etc.

I reckon they should sell the car, take what is owed including extras fees i.e sales, extra costs and then give the remainder back to the owners. Even though they are in the wrong, whats to stop police from taking $250,000+ Ferraris by claiming they were doing burnouts/speeding/breaking the law repeatedly dunno.gif

TRD Rolla

The police have to obviously justify the amount they take. They are not taking a "car" per se, they are taking an asset, and they are only allowed to keep the amount of the asset that is owed to them i.e. all admin fees, interest accrued, as well as the original fine. So of course they have to give pack any "profit" made from the sale, or that would be unjust.

Also, I'm pretty sure they have to give you a time frame to pay all you owe to them. Neither NZ or Aust is fascist enough to allow police to just take a 40k car (mods and all) and sell it for 8k to just get their fines back. In fact, you can easily argue in court that to pay back the fine, they could of taken your e.g. tv, dvd player etc, because they are only justified in taking the amound of assets owing to them, they are not allowed specifically to take the car. Basically, they took these guys' cars to use as a bargaining chip so the guys will have to come forward to pay their fines.

Come on, no one is THAT cruel, not even the police!

Oh well those 18 people have learnt the hard way to pay their fines. It was either that, or let the rest of the NZ populus pay for it through tax.

QUOTE (Silvia_Xtreme @ Sep 14 2004, 04:38 PM)
I wonder if they gave the Owners the option to buy their car back for the price of the fines... if so, then im 100% behind the NZ police.

EXACTLY.....................................otherwise, some ppl are gunna get some cheap rides!! lol

they have to be given the option to pay the fine out first. it will be amiazing the amount of money that comes forward LOL

I think the major issue is the fact that this may turn car enthusiasts away from AutoSalon, for fear that their car will get defected. It was one of the few places where it was assumed that you could display your car without any problems for the police.

This is likely to cause more issues than it'll fix.

The less people at autosalon events the better imo

vs style, if i was stupid enough in the first place to get fines, id pay them because i would realise i had done wrong ... its simple enough, you do the wrong things - you get fined, you dont pay, the police/govt take something to pay for the fines

it serves them right, i would shake the hands of the nz police over this

please stop preaching your innocent crap, for once this story is the worst type of fine enforcement i ever heard off, very unfair indeed..

for one if you;s think its alright to take a car from a car show then your a tool, thats why they have licences and rego you hit them where it hurts most (they cant cruise if they have no licence can they, dont give em back till they are fully paid same with rego just dont allow rego on the car till its all paid,it aint fair to take their car n sell it,thats bullcrap..

nsw gives you suspension if you dont pay the fine they refuse to remove that order till its paid in full (unless you can prove you need it*never lift it anyway*) same with rego, they just black list your name on transport computer you cant get nothing through em not even a 18+card..

i feel for em but i guess you pay the fine/s or suffer but thats not the right way to go about it,at least say *we keep your car till all money is paid and you will be paying for storage* thats fairer then this crap..

BTW why didnt they just reposess their belongings etc?

all i can say is, if the cops dont know why everyone doesnt like them they should by now, its because of that crap the cops lose respect, but in saying that if the cops accually had some respect i dont think they would pull a stunt like that, i always say this, find the middle ground, you give a little then take a little, do you really think the cops would be assholes to car enthuists if we were nice and respected them and listened to them? no, they would be nice and give us some slack, as for the guys who didnt pay there fines, well i feel sorry for them but at the end of the day it was there own fault, but i am very upset that the cops could sink that low

Hehe.. the cop actually liked my car.. laugh.gif Tho everything that is defectable I have already fixed and have the paid fines to show for it.. plus mine was the last car checked. So I would say its luck that he didnt book me for stupid stuff like some other cops did. dry.gif

Anyhow my 2c on the topic is that they didnt pay fine, sucked in for having it taken away, i've paid the fines that I have ever got and if they can spend so much on making the car more bling then they have no excuse for not paying their fine..

Defect on a car show tats wrong, like the QR one.... sad.gif Someone mentioned b4 about sending a summon to court.. well they may have? we cant be sure can we?

you are an absolute fool, im not preaching anything, except the fact that you are a tard. It dam well serves them right, they think they can get away with anything so its only fair that they have the items causing the fines taken away from them

i bet you are one of those whingers that cries and complains when they do something wrong and get caught, your solution is crap, what if people never pay the fines? and just go and get another car and keep it registered under someone else?

my solutions for you? keep crying like you are, no one cares

I don't know what everyone is really carrying on about. OK it's bad that this happend in New Zeland and I do feel for the victims as much as anyone.

The most important thing is that it would never stand up in court if it happend here in Australia so obviously we have different rules/laws than our transtasman counterparts do. No point fighting between ourselves here when it happend in another country.

It can't happen here because it would be the same as the Police coming onto your property and issuing you with a fine whilst your car was locked up in your garage. It's just not likely to happen as they are not on a pubic road and would never make first base in a court room. Come on everyone common sense pleeeeeeeaaaaaaase.

taking their cars cause they never paid a lot of fines, good i say, have disrespect for the law and treat tickets like a joke, they wont show you no respect either. Taking their cars to be sold is good, they got the money to spend few grand on wheels, few grand on stereo etc but dont pay their fines? morons i say, good on the cops

serves them right if they don't pay their fines. got enough money to bling their cars up - but not enough sense to pay the fines.

i mean thre are even slackers who pay $5 off a fortnight, its not that hard to pay your fines off!

That's f*cked they had their pride and joys taken away from them....Can you imagine the hours and hours and hours of work these ppl put it to produce these cars. However at the same time, the only ppl they can blame are themselves. Do the crime do the time...or in this case do the crime, pay the fine. If they can afford to spend copious amounts of money on their cars in the first place, they should be able to afford the costs of the fines they produce for speeding or illegal mods or whatever the fines were for in the first place. Damn shame though.
