Has anyone fitted a hydraulic handbrake before? Does it plumb into you rear brake lines? that would allow you to have both. You would probably move the factory handbrake to the right hand side of your seat like the old holdens i guess, and mount the hydraulic one where it feels natural.

OK so i finally got the minispool in.
Took about 3 1/2 hours, mainly due to i had never removed a diff centre before so I was winging it a little.
After pulling off the rear wheels and brakes, sliding the axles out and dropping out the diff centre, pulling it apart and fitting the minispool then putting it back together, it was time for a quick scrub, then the moment of truth as we took it out to the street for its trial.

WOW!!!!

Drastically lowers the amount of power and clutch you need to use to get the car sideways. Does it with much less effort, and much more predictability. Also, with full lock and a quick blip of the throttle and clutch, it'll turn a 180 on a 10c piece. Much better powering out of corners, can put more throttle down out of corners and not worry about tyre slippage.

All up, works very well for a $100 mod (including the spool, 2L of diff oil, a gasket, and a beer for after)

Also, fitted new tyres to the set of white rims. 225/50ZR16's. nearly an inch wider than i was running on them before, and definitely grippier. The 205's i pulled off them will be fitted to the black watanabes as i go through them.

If anyone wants a tutorial on anything ive done so far, let me know.

my first car was an r31, very easy and cheap to mod, mine had minispool, s13 coil overs, double sway bar,r32 lower control arms.and was very easy to slide. s13 stuff bolts straight in.s13 lower control arms will give you 2 or so more degrees camber.

hyrdo handbrake is legal as long as you still have the original handbrake in place.

http://wiki.r31skylineclub.com/index.php?t...ng_a_Mini_Spool

your going about it very well, and will be a fun car to get out on track with.or even try skidpan at QR first.

Just got back from Streetwarz - i was the only skyline (only nissan, even) to get out on the burnout pad and have a go. Was good! I tried to mix it up a bit on not just do static burnouts - but was practising drifting in large circles, trying to use the whole pad.
There were a few close calls, but i got a good response from the crowd so i was pretty happy.
Car held up well, did 3 runs of about 2-3 minutes each. Didnt over heat, didnt burn off any oil, didnt spring any leaks, didnt have any dramas with clutch/gearbox/diff. Went well!

nice mate you did really well seen ya today smile.gif live just round the corn from streetwars

Thanks mate i appreciate the feedback!
Never been on a burnout pad, was a lot of fun. You get some serious understeer tho, when your front tyres are rolling on little balls of shredded rubber!
Car definitely needs a little bit more power to keep em spinning on such a grippy surface.

good to hear your cars going good and your having fun smile.gif u gonna go out to archerfield on a wednesday for practice?

I just had a look on youtube and there isnt any footage up of me. there is a guy who has put up heaps of streetwarz vids but there are none from yesterday yet. i know a couple of mates got some footage of my so i'll get it on youtube and post a link - providing its not too much of an embarrassment haha!
Yeah id like to get out to archie on a wednesday - is it every wednesday now...? Til 9pm hey - issue is i dont leave work til 6pm, and im 45min north of brisbane, and the skyline is a trailer car!
NEED MORE POWER might be turbo time, or RB25 or SOMETHING but definitely needs more push.

hey, you've really helped me out a bit i recently just bought an 86 rb31 with the rb30 in in too, picked it up for 350 bucks only cause it had the 5 speed in it, but i was also going to set it up as a pure drift car seein tho i my own trailer and all, i was just wondering with the suspension as it is its fully independent but i wanna put coil-overs in it to make it really hard and no body roll and was wondering if you had looked into it to see wat wud fit without to much modification or none if possible, my only problem with the engine is that it has a slight knock in the bottom end i think i may be that 1 of the lifters has shit itself. my enterior is imaculate like it just come outa the shop, i've cut all the rust outa the roof and filled it in, i have painted the bonnet a satin black with some orange stencils that i made up so its called the DRIFT PIG lol original i know but it'll suit it as i am not painting the rest for a while and just spending my $$$ on suspension know i half know wat i need, and an engine conversion l8r on in the year with a rb25det turbo with a new turbo 5spd gear box from a japan import place in redcliffe.

to fit front s13 coilovers you got to get S13 lower control arms, hubs and knuckles, brakes all this bolts strigh in make sure you get coilovers with height adjust as you will have to have it adjusted pretty much all the way up.
the rear coilovers from a s13 only has 2 bolts so either you can re drill 2 new holes or you can take your r31 rear strut tops and with a small bit of work fit them on the coilovers!
have a read of
http://wiki.r31skylineclub.com/index.php?t...sion_Conversion
it will tell you what you need and how to go about it thumbsup.gif

Hey mate thats good to hear, got a good buy there i think. An R31 with a 5 speed is getting hard to find in decent condition.

Suspension - you can convert the front to the S13 Silvia suspension setup, using S13 control arms etc, and even change the brakes if there is much to be gained there. This will allow you to run coilovers designed to suit a silvia. Make sure you get height adjustable ones, and you will find you'll have to set them fairly high. You can also run S13 coilovers in the rear but you will need to re-drill the rear upper mount to suit the silvias two-bolt setup instead of the 3 bolts that the R31 strut top has.

You can also run an S13 steering rack to give you much better steering lock.

Being an overhead cam engine, pretty sure it doesnt have lifters, so if you have a bottom end knock you might find that is is big end bearing related...? Im not an engine builder so im not 100% sure there.

The RB25DET conversion with the tougher gearbox they come with (in your R33's) is a popular upgrade, and not hugely difficult i dont think, but im keeping mine as a 3.0L, keeping the RB30E and just playing with it to make it more effective.

Im trying to keep my car still usable as a daily driver is the main difference, so id like it to have slighty softer suspension than a city train.

man you have a really nice mint r31 there and as a frist drifter your going pretty good i would say
have a look on
www.r31skylineclub.com it has pretty much anything you wil need to know about r31s

cheers jason

wednesdays are every week, 4-8pm. 50$ entry for drivers
pfft, trailer cars are for the weak, just drive it smile.gif

for power, strap an rb25 turbo to the rb30. run stock boost. get a std vl rb30e ecu, it will accept up to 14psi before boost cut so no need for aftermarket comp.
a mate has this setup in his 32. comes on boost at 2000rpm and bakes nicely (:

lil_bobby_260
Post #48

Yeah might be time to start making a turbo-conversion checklist.

Turbo. Manifold. FMIC. Dump pipe. Oil/water lines. VL ECU. BOV. never done an NA-Turbo conversion before.

maybe u should look at other mods rather then a turbo? see if u can do something around the same price that may help more?

lil_bobby_260
Post #50

Like what...?
Have a read of the first post in this thread and see what you think I should do other than a turbo, to get more power, taking my current mods into account.

pipster11
Post #51

if you go turbo mate can i have your extractors? lol

where did you get them from and how much?

lil_bobby_260
Post #52

Extractors you can have for $80 if i go turbo haha... They are genie's im pretty sure. Lil surface rust but just rub them back, hit em with some rust converter which will just make them black, then wrap them in that fibreglass heat wrap you see on tough engines :-) thats my trick haha... works well and looks tough!

Ur in tasmania... would cost more to ship them than you'd be paying for the extractors themselves!

Looks like im definitely going the turbo intercooler route. Then down the track if it developes engine dramas it'll become an RB30DET.

pipster11
Post #53

im gonna be home (gold coast) in 2 weeks biggrin.gif:D:D:D:D:D
cant wait to get back
where abouts are you?
rb30det sure would be sweet

i wanna go turbo with my 31 but that wont be happening for a while (plus its the gf drives it most the time and i still have the 32 atm)

cant wait to sell the 32 and get some new shocks in the 31

btw i would just get some whiteline swaybars rather than the duals
plus you can get adjustable ends on the whitelines = heaps better for track work

looks like its shaping up well

how much was the MSD coil too?

lil_bobby_260
Post #54

Ive run whiteline swaybars in the past, on my stagea, so will definitely be using them again, was very happy with it.

Coil is an MSD Blaster SS, can get them for around $100. Works well with a decent set of leads, only weak point in the ignition is the dizzy now. Not sure if there are better distributors available, or if itd even make a difference. It must definitely be getting a good spark tho.

Didnt know you lived up here normally, pipster.

lol yer sorry i dont know what i was smoking pfffft haha yer be kewl if u go with the turbo hopefully help u out heaps with drifting

pipster11
Post #56

yer normally but in tas for uni sad.gif
only 2 places in oz do naval architecture but should be good when i finish $70k starting salary biggrin.gif
but for now im on $200 p/w youth allowance lol
deff wasn't a good idea to buy the 32 lol, but oh well

the 31 will be the new bus and if when i sell the 32 i'll put a bit of cash into the 31 and i recon we'll keep it for a while cos its a good car, gf wants it to be a bit of a legacy, her brother starts driving in a year or so, so he might inherit it.

i'd be pretty keen on the headers tho and more than happy to give you $80 for them when i get back

you've done pretty much exactly what i want to do with hers (but urs is series 3 = sex compared to the series 2 front, but i have awesome headlights and trip computer cos its a silhouette biggrin.gif)

lil_bobby_260
Post #57

meh silhouette schmilhouette haha. I have no need for trip computer and power windows! weighs it down! haha... thinking about stripping the interior out... but i honestly dont think itd weight much in it... its a poverty pack car.

Yeah serIII FTW - trying to buy another one.

So two places do it - and you chose TASMANIA?? nutter.

mighty-toy-boy
Post #58

interior stripping will kill resale if you intending on changing cars later.
forgot to mention earlier; would recomend a fresh nissan headgasket and bolts or a stud kit before +T.
currently buying bits for a 30e+t into my 180. it's exciting.

i wish i had power windows and central locking!!!
but the trip comp is pretty cool and almost seems pretty accurate (but the odo doesn't work lol so not actually sure if its working or not)
it was auto and mongrel from the tech section used to own it and he converted it to manual a few years back

but yeah tas is kinda gay
but its the best place for it cos they have the best facilities in the southern hemisphere (i think)
and i still get 3 months off at the end of the year biggrin.gif

First time I've read this thread and can I just start by saying a HUUUUGE thankyou for the job you've done typing your posts! I know it sounds simple but I've just read through 3 pages of boost comments here in about 3 minutes - and I've understood every single word! thumbsup.gif Fuck it makes a huge difference man. Well done.

Anyway - I really like the job you've done with your car mate. I can't drift at all and don't know a great deal about it but I still appreciate the lengths you've gone to with your build. Thanks for the added pics as well, helps newbs like me understand what your updates actually look like in the flesh if that makes sense??

Thanks for sharing and best of luck. beer.gif

Thank you for the positive feedback! Im trying to make it fairly readible, looks like there are a few guys building 31's so hopefully im helping out.
.
My day off is thursday, so i'll be replacing the oil and oil filter, checking the spark plugs, and checking to see that the work on the diff hasnt caused any dramas with leaks etc. Maintenance is key!
.
With regards to the idea of a turbocharger - id be looking at upgrading the gearbox to one from an R33, or having the standard one rebuilt as it has done over 200,000kms. If you read the first post in this thread I think I say that the idea was keeping it to a budget, but im not sure how long that will stand for.
.
Engine - Option A - Keep it NA, focussing on applicable mods to suit.
Engine - Option B - Run a turbocharger, with bigger injectors and FMIC etc.
.
Gearbox - Option A - Have the RB30 manual box rebuilt ($600ish)
Gearbox - Option B - Find an R33 gearbox with relatively low kms.
.
If it looks like it is going to be a few grand, id probably do better to sell the R31 and just pick up a silvia with an SR20DET or something.

branden
Post #62

yer u may be better off with a silvia but wait and see lol......... i gotta convert my 31 from auto to manual soon and ideas on what box i should go for? and unfortunatley i have bit of a budget but also i cant do much cause restrictions on p platers etc sad.gifsad.gif

pipster11
Post #63

33 box will be stronger straight up
but the 31 ones take a fair beating
i would just upgrade to the 33 box tho, you can find them cheep sometimes too
(only disadvantage is not knowing how good it is inside but to toughen up a 31 box could be $$$ was $600 for stock stuff?)

looking good mate, cant wait to read up on the diff removal once you do it

what were you thinking in the way of turbo set up?

cos your drifting it you could think about keeping the i/c inside of the rad (much shorter piping lengths) think its called v mounting

lil_bobby_260
Post #64

you can get rebuilt R31 boxes on exchange for about $600, which is not an expensive way to end up with a new gearbox!
The R33 ones are definitely stronger tho. Im not sure which way ill go.
Its only going to be driven for a few hours a month, tops, so ill just be going a monsta kit (manifold, t3/4 and ext gate) from ebay most likely. Then pick up a FMIC or SMIC and some piping.

Ill do the write up on swapping the diff centre from start to finish tonight. Its everything you need to do, starting with jacking up the car :-)

pipster11
Post #65

sick
you should deff do an na to turbo one too with plenty of detail

FLMN HT
Post #66

hey i just picked up another r31 as a spare parts car for my drifter last weekend, just pulled both the engines out today to swap em, if anyone wants any interior parts it's all stock all there, also the stock auto gear box, the car was owned by a chick in her late 20s, hit me up or pm me, i want the shell tho cause im chopping it into a ute later on

lil_bobby_260
Post #67

Pretty sure there is a for sale section for that eh.

By the way - nice ute. How many owners has that had NOW?

lil_bobby_260

off topic - but sad nonetheless.
I just had a chat with the guy who bought my old stagea - he sent me a nice photo of it.
