Hi all,
My mates second car is as states in the title, a E30 318i. We put a RB30 in it for a bit of a project, it was more of an impulse kind of decision. . Now im thinking, when engineering time comes, is that even legal??

Why the fuck would you waste your money on an RB30?

If your going to spend money, please make it worth while.

Unless you were to put an RB26 head on.. Would be different story

Yes an RB25 head is going on in the near future. But that didn't answer my query. . just wanting to know if it is legal or not, not if the RB30 is a waste of time.

for a turbo car for it to be legal its the weight of the car x3 which will give u the max ltr size engine u can use

But if its turbo it is not x3.

mate your kidding yourself right???

I have seen them with rb25s in them, and by rights they only upset the balance of the car a little. Take into consideration you are pulling a small lightweight 1.8 out and stuffing a 3l six cylinder in.

Do something different (street car) and put a rotary in it. I have eng. approval for a NA 20b or 13bT to go into a '81 E21 323i so a later model should not be a problem.

vehicles over 1100kg its 4.82na and x4 for forced

meh stiff the RB all together and put a M20B25 stroked to a 2.8 with a M52 crank, and either turbo that or put some ITB's on it!

You're still using figures from 1999....

800-1100kg - W x 4.0 for NA and W x 2.75 for FI

1100kg+ - W x 5.0 for NA and W x 3 for FI

Using rough figure of 1300kg for the E30, yes it would be legal.

that to me would be ideal being the purist but after building a 2.7 ETA stroker and also knowing a pretty tuff m30 build I can say the results to people wanting a big HP motor will be less than upto their standards. I do however know of a bloody quick M30 with n2o but we all know you cant run the bottle legally up here in QLD

bergie_318is
Post #18

yeah ive seen some bloody awesome M30's in e30's, but i suppose if you want a street car and not track, the RB would provide more HP.

Is legal. Not sure about when you put the turbo on though. That you may want to check out.

Yeah but this guys a Nissan driver so they must be poor as if they can afford BMW engine and shit. Only reason to not do up a BMW with BMW parts is if you're a poorby arse.

there's no reason to do up a 318 at all though.
it fucking takes an engine conversion to make them not shit. any engine.

Putting a VL engine into an old BMW sounds like a GREAT idea.

Getting rich, getting hectic, amirite

a great idea would have been buying a 325. but anything is better than the stock 4cyl, RB30, SR20, rotary, hyundai getz motor oopsie.gif anything.

You're using BMW 318i weight figures from 1999.... E30s weigh like 1100kg.

for drag racing the RB might suit
not if you want a circuit track car, wtb: balance

prob needs 200kg of chassis bracing ph34r.gif

DAL32
Post #26

What, for the chassis twisting torque of the RB30?

Oh yeah, to the op. You know you're swapping out a 100kw engine for a 114kw engine right? (both of those figures quoted as new 20yrs ago lol)

NOT WORTH THE EFFORT!

1988 E30 318i, 1125kg Kerb Weight. But this is for a 2 door, however they were only available in 2 door in that year.

Australian Design Rules state that an engine may not be fitted to a vehicle where the engine is older than the car. RB30 blocks into R32/R33/R34 etc is legal as the motor was originally fitted.

Think you will find an RB30 from a VL or R32 Skyline was before this BMW was made wink.gif Therefore, the legality is questionable...

The true indication is getting it mod plated due to the change in engine capacity(more than 15%) so the person you need to talk to about it being legal is an 'Authorised person' from the Qld Department of Transport who is the person who will be fitting the Mod Plate wink.gif They are the ones who can tell you which hoops to jump through to make it 100% legal or even if they will pass it wink.gif

This.

Best bet is to actually ring the QLD Department of transport and get the correct answer as opposed to the conflicting stories from SOME people on here who have no idea...

Dale, I already asked you nicely the other day NOT to post your shit in here unless you have something constructive to add.

Do it again and i'm going to suspend your account for 6 months.
