The Ulladulla man was being treated for severe head trauma, swelling of the brain and internal injuries in Royal Adelaide hospital. On lap 11 of the second and final feeder series race of the weekend, Cooper made heavy, side-on contact with a safety barrier at the fast turn eight. The initial contact was to the driver's side before the car veered across the track and hit the opposite wall with the rear-end. He was treated at the track before being rushed to hospital via ambulance. His mother and father were at his bedside and his wife was on her way to Adelaide from their NSW south coast home. They have two young children. V8 Supercars chief executive said the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) would "carry out a full and thorough investigation as a matter of course". Cattach also said it was doubtful safety issues concerning turn eight, where a number of accidents had happened over the years, were a factor in the serious nature of the crash. "It's a fast corner, no question ... but it meets all the design requirements of FIA (International Automobile Federation)," said Cattach. "We have absolute confidence in the way the barriers, etc. have been put together." CAMS president Colin Osborne added: "It's far too early to speculate on the cause of the accident ... whenever a critical incident of this type occurs there is a process that we set in place to investigate the cause of the accident. "I'm not going to speculate on any of those causes at this point in time but we will work with the relevant authorities to ensure that investigation is complete." It is the second serious accident in less than two years in the Fujitsu series.
