just wondering where bouts you can get these radios from and how much they are??? are they legal to use in private cars??? anybody interested in selling these, let me know if they are?!!?!?!?!?! :!:

I got a "GME TX4400" for my car, they go for about $479

I got a GME 6db & 9db gain Aerial kit for $ 100

I got a mounting bracket for $5



you can get them from Brisbane Car Sound etc etc etc

They are good for quite some distance (and are practically a must when cruising) I can get easily about 3KM through trees and hills more than 5-10 km when out in the open and better than 10 out in the sticks with the 9db gain aerial



Uniden make a handheld one which can be had for ~$80 + but is only good for about 1KM when u sit in a car (and thats in an ideal situation where there are no hills) But they are grerat when u need to move away from your car and keep in contact....

the .5 watt ones you can buy from dick smith. they are priced between 70-100.



if you want you can go 5watt but you will be paying more for it.



you dont need a licance if you dont go over 5w



oh and there nto iligal ... yet.

Oh, one more thing



In regards to legality



They are fine to use privately in a car, you don't need to hide them...



If you get caught using one to "EVADE" the authorities and they can prove it, you will get done big time... but that said I use mine all the time and understand that its perfectly legal to talk on one while you are driving...

The GME TX4400 is 5 Watts and is more than powerful enough for what you would be needing it for... smile.gif

ok then, thanks for that, sounds like i'll get one soon, but one more questions for me cuz i'm not really up on these radios yet, how do they work???? :oops: do you like tell all your mates to turn into one specific cahnnel and then just talk through the handset or is there just one line open for all cars within a certain distance. can police hear what your sayin???and can u hear what the police are saying??? :?:

Eh, its like being on IRC. You know what IRC is on the computer?

Uhm hmm how about Yahoo!Chat? Or MSN Chat?



Basically you can have 5 mates all with radios. They all have them turned on. So long as you are all on the same channel, you can hear each other. Lets pretend you are all on channel 19.



The trouble is that everyone else who is on channel 19 can hear you too. You dont know who is listening and there is no way to stop other people using your same channel.



The bonus is that its free and that you can listen to other people without them knowing smile.gif



The biggest bonus of a radio like the TX4400 (which I also have, ner ner grim and mcleod and paradoxx) is that you can have programmable channels. You get the standard 40 channels (which every half-decent radio has) plus 20 "custom" channels. Usually us cruisers put the police in those channels. Personally (myself and nismogirl) have all gold coast, brisbane and sunny coast police programmed in. There are also a few fire/ambulance as well from memory.



When we go cruising, we also take the handheld ($99 from dicksmith). We normally have the TX4400 scannning the police channels and use the dicksmith radio for talking between cars. If we hear something on the scanner, we let everyone know. This is especially useful at some of the servos on the way back from the coast. Within a few minutes of arriving, there is a broadcast on the police station saying "car enthusiasts" have arrived. By letting everyone know its time to leave, we avoid unwanted attention smile.gif



Eh, any more questions? Go read Mcleods little CB infomation page™, its got some useful info in it. My advice? Buy a dicksmith handheld. And buy those 1 dollar for a pack of 4 batteries from supercheap. DO NOT BUY THE 79 DOLLAR HANDHELD. It runs from AAA batteries which are more expensive and dont last as long. If you get to a stage where a handheld just isnt enough for what you want to do (doubtful!), then go buy a more expensive one. Just make sure you buy a Uniden 99 dollar one, not a 79 dollar uniden or even worse those stupid bloody Audioline and similar. They are seriously CRAP CRAP CRAP.

I dont know what my UHF is its a uniden something but i can get a good 25km out of it. It wasnt that expensive but you cant program any other channels. I called dick smith and a few other places then went to my local auto elec and got one for $30 cheaper same one. so shop around. they are very useful. it would have saved me the price of it already.

A good in car 5watter would give you that 25k range.. but a handheld doesn't do anywhere near that well when inside the car.. morelike 5 k's when inside the car.. which is still good enough for most purposes anyway..



If you're over the top like me and grim, you'll have an in car cb with a good exterior antenna tongue.gif

Im pretty sure i have asked this before in a previous post, but is there ne way u can hide the external antenna? Like earthing it to the chassis? Or somehow connecting it to the radio antenna? Looks a bit ugly if u have a massive antenna wobbling around on a car!

We have ours sitting on the back seat atm smile.gif Same radio as Grim / Mcleod / Paradoxx but with reduced range cause of crap location of aerial. And the coax that got chopped 3/4 of the way through by the damn recaros sad.gif



Anywho, the best way to hide an aerial is either get a glass mount (crap) which looks like a mobile phone exterior aerial or better yet, get a rubber ducky aerial and if you have a spoiler / bumper like skylines/silvia/any jap "plastic" car then you can put it between the front of the car and the radiator, the void is big enough of most cars to fit your arms in.



Best option for range is to drill through the middle of your roof and have a ground dependant aerial. Best for visual is to hide it behind panels of your car (eg: between bumper and radiator). Best compromise is a gutter mount or "Z" bracket.

ok so i bought my handheld uniden UFH radio. but i got a few questions. i've read the manual and it doens't really say all that much....so



1) What the difference between a simplex/duplex, repeater, and simplex station. ie: in the manual channel 1-8 are simplex/duplex, 9-20 are repeater with 11 being the backup emergency, and channels 21-40 are simplex. so what does that all mean. so then i get to, what is the "dup(duplex)" button for - is there like 2 channel 3's or something.



is there any real general purpose for certian channels. ie: which one is used for cruises etc....and which ones are a good idea to broadcast on???

i work at GME Electrophone, we`ve got some new little handhelds that most Brisbane CAR Sound stores etc should have...they are TX610..VERY good handheld for the price..would probably retail at around $120
