The former local councillor appeared in Burwood local court via video link, wearing a green prison tracksuit, and with a freshly trimmed beard. Mehajer had yet another lawyer working for him today – high profile barrister Anthony Bellanto QC. An expensive choice for a man who last week was seeking legal aid after saying he wasn’t able to pay his previous representative – lawyer Brett Galloway – who said he had to withdraw his services due to “ethical reasons”. Mehajer has now spent more than two weeks in custody after being arrested, accused of staging a car crash to avoid court just days after he insured his Mercedes for more than $150,000. Mr Mehajer's Mercedes AMG had collided with a Mitsubishi Outlander at an intersection in Lidcombe, causing him to be cut out of the car and taken to the hospital. He’s been charged with perverting the course of justice and conspiring to cheat or defraud. |
