QUOTE Recently got into a discussion with a mate about certain vehicles being "exempt" from using cat convertors (commericals etc.) "An appropriate catalytic converter must be fitted in the vehicle's exhaust system if the engine was originally designed to operate with one." I heard some rotary engines came without, is there a rotary guru who can confirm this? Yes that is right, any rotary engine made before 1977 did not come with cats and so they dont need them. How ever you will also find that many rotary owners belive that no rotary needs a cat ![]() |

just thought i might add that technically according to exhaust experts (i talked to a few exhaust shops on this subject)you are meant to change your cat every year... so if police look under your car and discover contents missing how are you to know just check it every few months specially if you are running a bit rich, i was driving down the M1 and i backed off from third and a nice little bang followed with a rattling sound that stopped after about 30 seconds. This was the contents of my cat deciding it didn't wana hang around ahhaha |

QUOTE(trdcamrypride @ Aug 9 2005, 04:14 PM) i work in a exhaust and the amout oof cats we replace is un believealbe also on several occasions we have guys come in with no cat or a hollowed out cat we dyno it then we put our hiflow cats on and they gain remarkably decent amounts of power. so its bullshit that no cat is better in any way at all. then wouldn't it make sense that racecars have them? AFAIK, they throw them in the bin when on the track... |

well having a cat may be better on some N/A cars but not on turbo cars , especially if you own a rotary. If you have doubts i will take my cat off and take you for a drive then put it on and show you the differance... not on public roads of course... you will find it runs heaps faster without a cat |

You'll probably find that a high-flow cat flows better then a cat that is empty. probably because the flow effects of a smashed out cat wouldnt be that great. however... if there was some straight through pipe welded into your cat..... That would be best of Both worlds! ...and everyone stop whinging about the environment, new zealanders dont require cats by law and the place still looks fine to me!!!! ![]() |

On non rotary engines its good to have some back presure but not on a rota, the more it flows the more power you get. Like Matt_RX7 said mine ran like crap for ages it got so bad the the car would just cut out and then one day it would not even boost, So i took off the cat and it was completly blocked(it was a metal inside) so i had to cut it open and empty it out and it ran 100% after that i never had any other problems and it had a big power gain to ![]() |
