I spoke at length today to Darren Curtis, a news reporter from CH7 in Brisbane. The main focus of the conversation was dispelling the myth to the rest of the public that anyone with a modified car is a "hoon". Darren was very helpful and explained a lot of things to me, and I to him which we both learnt things that we were not aware of before. First of all Darren told me the media view "hoons" as anyone that acts like those people did in Nerang on Saturday night. Basically anyone whom endangers others on the roads and acts the idiot. Darren was unaware of the amount of negativity that the genuine people in the car scene have towards CH7 over their stories of "hoons" and that it made us feel like it meant us good people as well. He also said that he knows that us decent people spend loads of dollars on our cars to simply enjoy as a hooby and if we lost our car and/or licence we can't enjoy that hobby anymore. He said it was never the intent of CH7 to have us all look like the idiots i.e. "hoons". I informed Darren of the real problems of the BWCP (alcohol and young people acting up to impress), the "no alcohol free zone" we have wanted in the BWCP and someone to actually enforce it (council say they can't as only the police can, police say only the council can as they made that law so no one enforces it). I also told him how if we see stupid illegal acts in the BWCP and other locations in S.E. Q.L.D we give them a mouthful, take their rego's and pictures etc and hand them to the Police. I also raised the issue with him of people in the car scene with GCCC, DOT,RACQ support etc going to local high schools and speaking to senior students over the "do's & don'ts" in the car scene. Also the fact we want the Police to come down on the idiots like 20 tonne of bricks as there is no place for them in the car scene. We would like to sit down with Police/Government authorities and work out a strategy to educate young people on the responsibility of driving and the repercussions that dangerous driving can bring. I also raised the following issues:- 1.) Police blocking off the esplanade 2.) Police setting up defect stations and not knowing what they are looking for 3.) The way the current laws are in Q.L.D. that the government think "hoons" are more dangerous than "drink drivers" and they too should have their car confiscated like we do (Darren seemed to support this) 4.) The BWCP on a Fri/Sat night emitts less noise than the daily 9-5 grind of traffic so the excuse of noise to close it down for the new high rise isn't valid 5.) Keeping the BWCP open to us all instead of it closing and us all over the place (Darren seemed to support this) 6.) Far more dangerous road users/cars on the road than just people in the car scene but they seem to be impervious to the law. 7.) Having the Police come to the BWCP and assisting them in getting rid of trouble makers etc. Now down to the real business end. Darren and CH7 are more than happy to come out and show the public we are the decent genuine people. Now I need suggestions from YOU as to how we go about this and what do you feel is important to have the public see and when do you want this to be done? Please remember I have refered this site to Darren Curtis, in particular this topic so please keep your comments clean, civil and intelligent. I know how some view CH7 but they are at least giving us the chance so lets not ruin that and take it whilst it's there Ok please post up your comments/thoughts/views etc ![]() This post has been edited by king of the concrete jungle: Apr 21 2005, 04:26 PM -------------------- ![]() Bite off more than you can chew, then chew like hell! Would a massive meet at bwcp (like the christmas charity cruise) be good enough to show them that we can all drive properly and that we are not "hoons". If they classify "hoons" as someone that endangers others well drive around for a bit, I see way more "mature (old)" people doing that then the young and well cops just take a look at them and move on... but yea... go Rick |

well also let them know how unfair the police can be towards us, like by setting up a defect station outside car events? also getting defected by having no water in the windscreen bottle? im sure most of the public would laugh at some of the fines we get? |

QUOTE(VS_SeV @ Apr 20 2005, 06:23 PM) Seriously, dont you guys have anything better to do with your lives apart from worrying about being labelled a "hoon?" We could be off doing other things, but there is a large portion of cruisers out there who are sick and tired of being blamed for something they didn't do. This is a way to show who is the bad and who is the good. |

QUOTE(Pringles @ Apr 20 2005, 05:55 PM) track day or event, perhaps some photos and a discribion of the bc charity day i think the drift-days at queensland raceway - and the fact that noone does burnouts up and down the street afterwards could be a good start? showing a charity cruise would be a good one aswell (a worthwile charity mind you) as its generally only the minority that dont or cant afford to donate that are the trouble makers (i dont need to give examples) well done rick - good to see someone with knowledge and the ability to put together a decent well-written debate has taken the reigns ![]() |

QUOTE(30OTT @ Apr 20 2005, 06:35 PM) nicely said german... u need the cars for pictures tell them ![]() should get a few ideas down and poll on it... How about the fact that defect stations are setup around motorsport event.. ie willowbank. People go to take their sport/hobby off the street and are punished for it. Very bad image, if people know they are going to be locked down and unfairly scrutinised after doing the legal thing, they will end up not going at all and racing on the street where at least they may have "some" chance of getting away with it |

because being labeled a hoon means we get pulled over atleast once a week for "random licence inspections" "defect checks" etc, it becomes annoying after a while when you have done nothing wrong. people calling the police and giving your rego because your car is louder than normal or has this and that done to it and labelling you a "hoon". everything that king has gone through to get us this opportunity has been worth it so far so dont go ruining it now! KING - if you are going to set up an event or something, figure out something so no idiots turn up |

mate if our cars were done up illegally, there would be alot less of them on the roads, but as u can see from the event pics, theyre all still there, yeah some have cut the springs and done illegal shit to them but theyre the ones that go to the industrial areas and backstreets and drag, those kids at the gold coast that got blocked in from the residents, how many of them belong to this site??? how many of their cars were done up to the extent of the ones on here?? how many of them were imports or actually looked respectable??? none, all i saw was a few holdens with panels from other cars, and a n14 pulsar. did u see anyone from bwcp on the news that night??? no so give it up and worry about melbourne |

VS_SeV - when someone spends the thousands of dollars on a properly installed suspension setup then gets pulled over for a "random licence check" and ends up getting done for having a car that sits at 98mm instead of 100mm - is that really fair? |

Why does everyone have to bitch about this topic. We all wana be able to drive our cars on the road equally and not be harrased. I got no defective item on my car. Yet I get pulled over all the time for shit and its beyond a joke. Then there is the attitude you get from the police, when all I do is cruise along the st, changing at 3000rpm. Its all a crock of shit if you ask me. |

Rick, you're efforts are to be congratulated, there is a lot of "talk" about trying to get our point of view across, but you are one of the very few who seems to put words into action.......... |

Sounds good You'll will just have to make sure that you can fit what 300 or more cars somewhere at the sunshine coast in an area reasonably close to each other which is why i personally think it might be better having it at the bwcp? And also a few weeks notice so people can get work off and organize their cars and what not. |

I personally think a smaller group of nominated spokespersons need to speak out - perhaps from not just the cruising scene, but also the people from the drag/drift sides of things. People who truely want to improve the public image like Rick, who constantly goes out of his way to try and make people see our side of things, and bring the council, the enthusiasts, the law and the locals all together on an even playing field. |

As much as I love the idea of another huge charity cruise, I think we need to get our point across, not our numbers... I'm sure we could organise some way for people to submit ideas for things to be discussed by the nominated people... I agree with your idea of selected spokes people. If we could get them to commune with said officials they can put the ideas forward at a person to person level. How ever, I reckon they should also hold a cruise to let them know how many people don't like the way things are as well and the spokes people saying why... my 1.32cents |

The only fault in this, is that certain people, possibley members of this site, or possibley associates of these member, may attempt to ruin this for the rest of us. Intentionally doing burnouts and whatnot, in order to gain attention to themselves for some stupid reason (perhaps the same reason that they fry up their tyres) And for the plainly stupid fact that, they just dont give a rats. Still, Should Mr. Curtis, I myself and more than lickly most of the other entusiasts on this site, am greatly impressed, and gratefull for this opertunity. |

i totally agree king, perhaps show the level of detail and love that has gone into the cars, the care that is taken of them, the level of maintance that these cars get etc, it would put most of the average drivers to shame as to how well kept our vehicles really are kept and are much safer than the average joe's car because we maintain them with passion! I just hope and pray that the story does not get twisted again like so many others and make us all look like the villans again |
