The idiots on our roads
KAY DIBBEN chief reporter

QUEENSLAND'S worst drivers of the year have been exposed by police desperate to stop holiday road carnage.

The state's most brazen speeding motorist was clocked at a shocking 226km/h in a 100km/h zone, while the drunkest driver was eight times the legal limit.

Another driver was caught using a mobile phone – and a laptop.

Police are disgusted with the irresponsible driving. "It is just criminal," said state traffic support section Superintendent Ian McIntosh.

State Police Minister Paul Lucas urged motorists to drive carefully to avoid a repeat of last year's holiday-period carnage of 42 deaths – the worst in seven years.

Although there had been no road deaths by early last night, police lamented the fact holiday road safety messages had failed to get through to many drivers.

In the past week, speeding motorists have been caught doing 123km/h in a Brisbane 60km/h zone; 155km/h in a 80 zone; and 212km/h in a 90 zone.

Early yesterday, a 37-year-old man crashed his car into a tree on the Bruce Highway near Caboolture after a 10km high-speed pursuit.

Friday's offenders included a driver doing 160km/h in a 60 zone at Bargara, near Bundaberg, another going 120km/h in a 70 zone on Brisbane's northside, and a drink-driver three times over the limit doing 145km/h in a 100 zone on the Gold Coast.

The year's drink-driver with the highest blood alcohol reading blew 0.41 after his Holden Commodore crashed at Whiteside, in Brisbane's north, at 2.50am on March 20.

Almost 1800 drivers were caught speeding on Friday.

One driver involved in a crash on Brisbane's northside on Friday was already absolutely disqualified and had a blood alcohol reading of 0.24.

"In a period when kids are on the road and people are out and about on holidays, doing those speeds, it is just criminal," said Supt McIntosh.

"Nobody should have to drive on a road with people like this, not at this time of the year."

The state's worst speedster was doing 126km/h over the limit when photographed by a speed camera in a 100 zone on the Warrego Highway at Gatton, west of Brisbane, on August 24.

Four of the 10 fastest speeding drivers this year were on the Pacific Motorway at Pimpama, south of Brisbane, doing 182 to 215km/h in a 110 zone.

It's not just drink-driving and speeding that are angering police. More than 12,000 motorists across the state have been fined a total of more than $2.7 million this year for using mobile phones while driving.

Some of the worst examples include a driver caught talking on the phone while looking through a street directory, and another using a mobile phone and a laptop computer.

One man tried to hide his phone in a takeaway food bag that he threw out of the car.

He denied having the phone when pulled up by police at South Brisbane and told them they could search his car.

When the takeway bag started ringing, police found the phone, answered it and the caller asked for the man who had denied it was his phone.

Supt McIntosh said many mobile phone-users were dobbed in by other motorists.

"It's becoming socially unacceptable to drive around and talk on the phone," he said.

Even without a mobile phone, some drivers still managed to astound police with their irresponsibility. One man was caught using an electric shaver while driving a courier van.

There were also many instances of motorists using both hands to eat while steering with their knees, and others applying makeup and brushing their hair.

Last year's 42 holiday road deaths included 13 in crashes where alcohol was a factor. Another 637 people were taken to hospital.

I seriously can't comprehende some peoples stupidity. Were they born without the ability to use common sense?

What disturbs me more, is the increase of people who have killed innocent people and STILL don't accept responsibility for their actions, just go on their merry way, continuing to do what they did before the incident.

I hope all mentioned above, and people doing the same thing get well and truely owned.

And please, don't come in the thread boasting about shit you've gotten away with rolleyes.gif .

Good thread mate, hopefully it makes people think. But I doubt it sad.gif

your right, some ppl are ignorant and still flaunt the law,one day they will realise it when they have killed someone they love or a innocent bystander...
always take something drastic to make ppl wake up to themselves..

I have no real comment to this thread in relation to speeding because i know i do and i am not going to be hypacritical and say i dont.... (not to extremes that is)

However what i will say is that i personally cannot stand drink drivers. Not only are they dangerous, but they are seriously irresponsible (sp). If they kill someone or fuck someone up in hospital then how will they live with themselves...

Also kell there is no such thing as common sense smile.gif

I was actually suprised at the drivers on the road christmas night. I was on the highway driving my mums van, with her and my bro and sis. The roads were quiet wet and i dont drive the van above 100 in normal conditions so i was doing around 80 to 90 for 20 odd kms and there was 4 cars behind me that did not overtake (they had bout 3 chances) and they all kept their distance so i was quite impressed that people still drive sensibly and even safer when its wet.

I'm not 100% sure of the full and exact parts of this, but I will do my best to tell this as accurate as I can

There will be a story on ACA I think it is tonight. From what I have seen on the shorts of the adds for it there is a new test case before the courts or going to be put forward to the courts in Australia very shortly over incidents such as these outlined in the original post. Like I said from what I can gather from the adds it's going to be a test case to make the laws a whole lot harsher for such incidents as they seem to be likening a vehicle to firearms due to the damage they cause and such stupidity in a cars handling (as outlined in the first post) has the potential to wipe out many more lives than a firearm. Like I said I'm not 100% positive of this but it seems to be this or similar according to the adds.

I hope they start sending people to prision for 5yrs for such stupid speeds as in excess of 200km/hr. That's just plain retarded and they never deserve to hold a drivers licence again. At this time of the year, with this amount of traffic on the road, the heat and traffic that then cause the roads to bukle and twist is like playing genuine Russian roulette with all six bullets in the cylinder.

'Twas the night before Christmas, not a rain drop in sight, a person was speeding, and they soon got a fright, they came around a corner and lost all control, did a backflip and a 180 and took out a pole.

We happened to drive past after coming home from the shops, we saw this rolled car and thought it was tops, but then we noticed that the car was on its roof, and realised that the driver had acted like a goof.
wavey.gif

This is a true story by the way, 200m up the road from my house. Someone in a small car came flying around the bend (we can assume) and hit the recessed gutter for the walkway, and then launched and did a 180 and flipped onto its roof. Just proves the stupidity of people, especially on Christmas Eve. By the way, this was actually this year, 3 days ago dry.gif Not sure what happened to the driver, but the ambulance and police were there pretty quick.

Oh, and i am getting sick to death of people riding their high horses and donning their keyboard warrior outfits. I'm with Manic VN, Fidel was just being honest, and people with Oxymoron usernames (SickVn rolleyes.gif ) are just going off topic wavey.gif

Some of the comments on here prove one thing, that the "speed kill" atttitude the govt. has been feeding everyone is working slowly. The "said" article in the sundaymail. was a culmination of a year of traffic mayhem, we as a "human" society will basically behaves like humans, we will sometime do stupid things on a impulsive urge, It's response like this that has made "our society progress in the way it is in on all front.in medicine-science-arts.Some of our greatest invention are by accident which has resulte from this "human response" As for our road toll it comes down to attrition rate, as a society i have to say we are a very safe-driving and law abiding society, and the govt. refuse to admitt this and in their callous greed have created a culture of "speed kill".
Just think about it cars have become leaps and bound interm of safety, a mini car eg, a corolla of today vintage will rip in half a VN commodore which is quite large as in comparable size.
What about road engineering methods which make safer roads?
Have anyone stop to asked these questions? and how much are the gotv. doing to making older roads safer?
Did u know that a car doing 80kays has an extended stopping distance of about 30 metres. over a car doing 60 kays
But did you know that a car doing 60kays trying to stop over poor undulating surface ie"granard Rd" will take twice the distance to stop?
and what has the govt. done about the situation of our roads in regards to safety? NONE!!!!
They are barely able to build rd to cope with traffic flow, let alone making older one and new ones safe.
So all those that has a negative comments regarding member of this forums for being "human being" it's time you asserted that energy toward the govt. regarding the "REAL" road safety.
ps. no i don't speed or street race just a concern driver.
It's just sometime is get p*ss off at poor comments without insight into the problems.

Agreed..... Phil cops to much shit about it.

Yes he does it, yes he has been caught. No one is perfect. Also i dont think phil has ever complained.. There are others who do far worse and dont get condoned (sp) for it. Its just that phil is known for it... as is dave and so forth.

Yesterday, going to town from home, I was wondering if my speedo is inaccurate, if anything it should underread by 3% as the tyres are 3% greater in diameter than stock, and I was doing the speed limit on the western freeway and ippy motorway, and I was like the slowest there. What the hell is everyone doing????????????

Is it that people see a 180 and try to go faster?????/

the world is full of wankers

These idiots where everywhere over the holidays, i saw one car overtake a whole heap of cars waiting at the lights at about 90km/hr while the light was still red and he did it on the side of the road, i saw another guy do a burn out in a shit old car in the middle of the road with little kids and familys walking right passed him to there cars, then i saw about 3 cars run extremely red lights. On my return from the coast to brissy i was overtaken by about 50 cars that where doing atleast 30-40km/h over the speed limit, when there where police all over the road. Some people are just dumb, if your going to do it and there are alot of people who think they need too, just dont bloody do it during the middle of the holidays when there are familys all around u.
