Cars grabbed at show to settle unpaid fines

14.09.2004 7.00 am

Police and Justice Ministry staff pounced at a Christchurch motor show at the weekend, confiscating 18 vehicles from drivers owing $150,000 in fines.

The Auto Salon Exchange event had attracted thousands of young car enthusiasts from around the South Island.

The 18 cars will be sold to recoup money owed in fines. In addition to seizures for fines owed, police impounded about 10 vehicles, wrote a further 16 off the road, and issued more than 150 tickets for a variety of traffic and vehicle offences.

i got 2 points of view
- firstly imagine the effort, pain, cash and heartache which has gone into the cars...
-then its their own fault for not paying the shit
and eye for an eye i guess. rolleyes.gif

"The 18 cars will be sold to recoup money owed in fines."

I too think it’s a good idea, if you can’t pay your fines then expect to be hit where it hurts

If you stopped making house, credit card or car payments you would expect item’s to be re-possessed (or items to the value of the debit + admin costs)?.... I can’t see this being any different.

The money it costs to chase bad debits makes it hardly worthwhile, so for the most part there is nothing ever done about it in Govt which stinks

poor buggers (no pun intended)

I would just feel angry being the car owners thats all..... go to show off your car only to have it sold

vs style, if i was stupid enough in the first place to get fines, id pay them because i would realise i had done wrong ... its simple enough, you do the wrong things - you get fined, you dont pay, the police/govt take something to pay for the fines

it serves them right, i would shake the hands of the nz police over this

F$#k me - that is such bullshit !

I wonder how many of thise ppl who had hem impounded are actually in the courts fighting about the fines they owe? Have they all agreed that they would pay them or are they contesting them?

Why not just garnish your wages and take your tax refund. That is so over the friggin top!

Im sure most would be encumbered under finance anyway - so after the cops takin them and selling them and then paying back everyones loans they are left with sweet fuck all anyway and the owners still have a big ass bill for the fines.

Shouldnt u have some sort of security against the cops doing this at shows? Even when car enthusiasts are doing something LEGAL THEY GET BENT OVER

Each to their own but the police should never have taken it to the venue. That's just crazy!

Time and place.

I hate you edit bar, die.

actually i think it was a perfect place to do this, it serves them right

dstryr, thats the thing, they werent doing legal things, they got fined, didnt pay for their fines for doing ILLEGAL things - so the police took action, good on them - that just goes to show, dont do anything wrong and youll be safe ....

please read my previous post a little more carefully. I think u have missed most of what my point was.

I wonder if they gave the Owners the option to buy their car back for the price of the fines... if so, then im 100% behind the NZ police.

So do the police sell the cars, take what is owed to them and then give the rest back to the owner, or does the owner lose possibly tens of thousands of dollars and see no money whatsoever?

I reckon they should sell the car, take what is owed including extras fees i.e sales, extra costs and then give the remainder back to the owners. Even though they are in the wrong, whats to stop police from taking $250,000+ Ferraris by claiming they were doing burnouts/speeding/breaking the law repeatedly dunno.gif

This bit is also of concern to me:

"In addition to seizures for fines owed, police impounded about 10 vehicles, wrote a further 16 off the road, and issued more than 150 tickets for a variety of traffic and vehicle offences."

That suggests they handed out defects aswell. Imagine being the owner of one of those cars - and for the show you dumped it on its guts. Then the police rock up and hand you a defect for having it too low. Or if you hooked up your nitrous bottle for show - and you get done over for having that.

GotDubs?

yeah that would suck - just go to sydney autosalon and look how many owners remove their springs alltogether for the show to get it dumped.

Ppl will just stop attending shows in the future if the owners are always worried about the cops checking everything out. I know I always used to pull my bonnet down when a cop was in the area even though it was completely engineered.

i lol'd and still am lolling and what you just said - that was in response to what missclaire wrote, but it has mysteriously disappeared wacko.gif

i am a car enthusiast, why would i be posting on here? Perhaps people werent getting it into their heads that they had to pay their fines or action would be taken, so the police took action and on a large scale. I reckon that was a good demonstration of what should happen if fines arent paid.

Perhaps they did go to their houses and were continually ignored or just given the ol, yeah yeah ill pay it tomora and never happened, so these people were made an example of.

I am a big car enthusiast, but i have no sympathy for tards that do the wrong things, dont pay fines and then bitch, whinge and cry when their car is taken.

GotDubs?

TRD ROLLA - if they just sold the car - would they haggle with a buyer over the price? Or just sell it at market value? There could be tens of thousands of dollars spent on a show car.

Imagine taking BAR B and selling it for the price of a BMW 318i. Thats just crazy. How can you gauge the value?

psi999
Post #30

Who knows under what circumstances they were issued..... They could have been people leaving the car park for as much as we know.

As for police confiscating vehicles, I am sure they would have all been done lawfully, ie if a matter is still going through court then the fine is not overdue (but that’s not to say the alleged offender has not already got owing fines).

edit - confiscated cars that are “proceeds of crime” are already auctioned by the public trustee where the reserve is set by public trustee at a market value sum of the modified car.... so I would imagine these would be similar.

Quite a few drag cars have been sold as proceeds of crime already

Although its a shame the cops have taken there cars in this way, don't pay the fines you have to cop it on the chin.

Worse bit out of the whole lot is that the cops will more than likely sell their cars just like a bank would and only look to make enough to recoup the money owing from the fines. So there are gonna be some people well and truly out of pocket. unsure.gif
