When i was going to tafe for my apprenticeship, that is precisely what they did. However that was at the ITHACA campus, but i would assume most campuses with panel beating/spray painting facilities would be able to help you.

Keep in mind that the work WILL NOT be spot on, but in all honesty they are pretty damn good for apprentices, and they have their teacher on their case the whole time too, so you can expect a resonable job.

I say go for it, if you are willing to take a small risk, it helps the young fellas (and girls) out. Can't learn by doing single panels all the time smile.gif

Let us know how it turns out. thumbsup.gif

if u take the risk, its alright.. becausei think the person who is painting your car will do his/her best to make the paint look spectacular because they are being examined upon their work.

I was told that TAFE's dont do these jobs anymore as it was taking away too much business from the normal panel beaters and nearly every tom dick and harry wanted there car painted at a TAFE, i was told this by a TAFE on the northside of Brisbane.

yeh i never thought of it like that.. its a good point though very true. thumbsup.gif

It is an excellent idea and I have used it myself, well I let a mate do my VL years ago and it was flawless. The teacher made sure it was perfect before it left as it is his reputation on the line also. I was very happy happy with the workmanship and I would recommend anyone to do the same thing. You are best off to speak to the actual teacher of the course OR speak to a student in the course to organise it. Bottom line is apprentices have to learn somewhere and you do get a quality job.

i agree, id happily hand over my other car to give a tafe student a chance at proving himself and some experience at the same time...

Also his work would be cut out for him on the handi

yeh i would be interested on both my cars.. do they fix panel damage as well?

The tafe i go to also offers basically the same thing but with the mechanical side to it covered not the panel work. If the panel course work is run anything like mine then you can basically be assured that it will be a good job. All work that we complete is checked for examination purposes and anything that is missed is picked up. The rep of the tafe is on the line too so they make sure everything is perfect, they aren't going to get many people giving them cars if they have a rep of being dodgy are they.

hey mick.. what tafe do you go to? i want to get both my cars resprayed, any idea when and how much and what tafe would be capable of doing this?

Micks_Silvia
Post #18

mitso.. The tafe i go to only does the mechanical side of things. It is a dedicated organisation for mechanics. Easiest way to do it would be to ring around and see if any of the tafes offer it. Sorry i couldn't be of any help to getting the respray done. Just making a point before that the tafe work is checked and barely ever goes out dodgy.

interesting to keep in mind...if someone can come up with a specific TAFE that can do it that would help everyone! i wouldn't get my car done...no way...even if it is good...cos im getting the TOP job to my ute and its already to go! but my mate needs his car sprayed for cheap..funny thing is he goes to tafe but doesn't know anything about it biggrin.gif thumbsup.gif

As others have said all you need to do is call up any of your local TAFEs and find out what they offer. Obviously you will want a relatively local one to do this for you.

u wouldnt think the risk would be too high hey? they have instructors or teachers or wat eva unless u got one of those kids who think they know how to do everything n dont ask

u think it would be cheap as hey cos they would be lookin for cars to paint ne way

i know at the tafe up hear they do engine rebuilds for commodore 6 and 8 cylinders hey and they are done on privatly owned cars so goodluck mate thumbsup.gif

Sound's like a great idea, but by the sounds of things all TAFE's will have a long waiting list now, cos all you guy's are gunna start ringin up askin for your car's to be done and what not, so don't abuse this neat little idea that we have here guy's and girls!!! dry.gif

dont get your hopes up. we were liasing with logan tafe about some apprentices to do some paving for my army unit, and didnt get any where. they are selective in their jobs, as they have to mark on certain selection criteria. But i did find out that all we would have to pay for was the materials, all labour was free.
