Firstly, both cars are quiet old. Secondly they're the sort of car that you won't be able to find parts for very easily.

Rotaries, as anyone who has owned one for a while are quiet unreliable and require a lot of matenence. They are noisy and really aren't all that enjoyable to be driving around all the time.

Turbo Charade: Parts would be a killer, no room, hard to modify because of the small engine bay, likely to be thrashed.

Just with things you'd be highly suspecting of rust and general condition.

No knowing your budget. I'd say you'd be better off buying a:

2L Pulsar (SR20DE, with option of engine swap later)
Corolla 1.6L (With option for engine swaps later)

Very reliable cars, fun to drive, cheap cheap parts, plenty of knowledge about them.

You can buy what you like, but i've been there and done that, its more fun having something you enjoy than a money pit.

If you are buying an old car with an old motor... thats answered the question. The old need TLC. As long as you are prepared to put some time and effort and money into it, not just whinge everytime something goes wrong then thats fine whichever/whatever you buy.

Agreed.

Look at some of these options... you'll have to save up a little more but atleast you won't be throwing your money away. Here are some good NA 4 bangers.

Nissan Silvia Q (1990 4cyl 2.0L NA 103kw@6400/178Nm@4800 1110kg)
Nissan BluebirdLX/SSS (1993 4cyl 2.4L NA 112kw@5600/210Nm@4400 1270kg/1320kg)
Nissan Pulsar Q/Ti/SSS (1991 4cyl 2.0L NA 105kw@6400/179Nm@4800 1075kg-1141kg)
Nissan NX/NX-R (1991 4cyl 2.0L NA 105kw@6400/178Nm@4800 1130kg/1165kg)
Toyota Carolla GTi (1991 4cyl 1.6L NA 100kw@6800/146Nm@6000 1065kg)
Mitsubishi Galant GSR (1990 4cyl 2.0L NA 102kw@6000/173Nm@5000 1280kg)

Car that is a stout performer for under $3k would be an AE82 corolla with a 4AGE.
Even herd from one of my customers bout 6 months ago they bought an AE82 with a 20 valve 4AGE for $3200

These cars are tough, reliable and don't go to bad. I even know someone that ran a 15.2 quater mile with exhaust and pod as only engine mods (don't know how the hell that ran that well though!)

Get a runabout first and save for a better car.

I suggest a toyota as a first car, the older ones. Parts are available, relaible as hell etc. Such as 85 celica, rollas etc.

i said charade but I change my mind...
RX7 cos if its got a blown motor you could buy it cheap... real cheap and stick an injected 13b or even a turbo.
Rotaries are heaps and heaps of fun, but you'd wanna know how to fix it

Neither....get a little pulsar or something. First car should be reliable, which you'd be struggling with these two. Also for your first car, you shouldn't looking at performance IMO.

you wont get nothin much decent but a first car really shouldnt be cos u might stack
go somthing reliable, easy to fix and cheap on parts
eg.
84-87 corona
early 80's bluebird
early 80's 626 etc.......
should get a decent one for around 2k
and then you have another grand to muck around with thumbsup.gif

laugh.gif
speaking from experience there is actually a fair bit of room in the engine bay, believe it or not.
as the charade was an aussie delivered car, MOST parts should be readily available.. those that arent wouldnt be hard to track down.

depending on wether you were to go the 3cyl or 4cyl turbo'd engine would determine wether you have issues or not.

if you can pick up a turbo'd charade for 3G's id go it.. as ive heard these engines have been pushed out to 20 odd psi and run some nice competitive times down the 1/4.

also it hasnt been done to death, like most of the other cars listed above..
