Ive been toying round with the idea of using a smallish intercooler too cool the air goin into the manifold with out runing a turbo. Just want to know do you think it would have enough pressure and would it provide much of a HP boost. Also thinking of getting water/alcohole sprayer to spary the cooler.

if you were going to do that, what was stopping you from going the whole hog?

wouldt/couldnt be that much more $$ on top of just a intercooler setup (could it? - dont flame me in a n00b tongue.gif)

It would be for my brothers car. 2003 Mazda 323. He hasent got much money, and it would cost a fair bit on top of that, especilly if he wanted to turn up boost. I dont think the 1.8l will take lotsa boost(mite i be rong)like 6psi .

Nope, i think the 'cooler would just restrict the air going to the engine more than anything... unless you put and air pump in between the 2, (also known as a supercharger! tongue.gif ) Better off to fit a sports filter and purchase, or make some kind of cold-air intake system...

its a 2003 323, wasnt meant to go fast so dont bother, just drive it for a bit and when the time comes sell it an buy something quicker

....... some of us arnt made of money and insurence gets too high. And its the car he wanted to buy not and import or a sechand domestic or something so thats what he has. if thats your view on it good for you but he wants that car and he wonts it to be quicker so if you dont like good for you. its like me saying that your car aint ment to be quick, that yours is slow. I know the mazda is slow but when its finished it could beat yours.

and..........you got my pieace. not having teary jsut saying cos it wasent ment to be fast and that not everyone likes it dont mine that it wont go fast and that someone could do something decent with it

*cough* wank value *cough* you got too much money if you have enought o put a FMIC on a NA car for the purposes of cold air intake. stupid and i dont think it will do a quarter the job of a decent cold air intake for NA anyway

An intercooler on a turbo has air pushed thru it, an atmo engine would be trying to suck air thru the filter, thru the pipes, thru the intercooler - you would have AWFUL throttle response and probably gain no power.

Get some heat shielding done up, run a boxed filter with a cold air feed. Make sure the pickup point for the cold air feed is actually getting air - it takes the easiest route, so if its easier to flow around your hose it will. Make it almost seal againt the place you take the air if you wish. If you wanted to go a little extreeme you could have a set of extractors put on it and get them thermal coated to trap in the heat, get some wrapping or coating put around the intake to the throttle body to keep the heat out.

I apologise for my comment as well....

and as for the cooler on a na car...it wont work, because the whole point of having an intercooler on a turbo is to reduce the heat created with the charge from the turbo...

because air gets heated up by the turbo, and intercooler is necessary to bring those tempretures down...

In an atmo car an intercooler is not need because the air going into the throttle body has not been heated up by a turbocharger.

You could go for cold air induction with a twist if your seriously interested....

For example, one of my mates i used to work with was an engine builder and he built at atmo SR20DE that made something like 200+ hp....

for one of the induction mods he made a small compartment where you could put dry ice into....and whenever they took the car to the track they just filled the small compartment up with dry ice and as you drive along the air that was rammed into the filter had to go past the dry ice compartment and cooled the air down heaps...

thats one thing you can do i suppose if your really interested and got the time...

crazy bunny, as everyone has said go cold air..... bu ti have osmething to add..... if oyu are willing to spend the money on an FMIC to get cooler air

why not spend the money you WERE willing to spend on that on something totally non cold air related that will give your car a a shitload more power than cold air will anyway?

hell fo rthe price of a decent front mount oyu could get a set of cams, or exhaust, heaps of shit have a think about what oyu wanna get done and how much money you want to spend.

Mate I agree with Woody. It isn't a quick car to begin with and i don't think it ever will be without mega $$$ spent on it. Be happy with what you have until the time comes and then hock it for something that was made to perform.

An "intercooled 2003 NA 323"? Say that to yourself a few times and see if you're still keen on the idea...

An intercooler will only work if the intake air is hotter than the ambient air (intercooler is a 'heat exchanger', not a magical cooling machine). If the intake air is the same temperature as the ambient air, it's not going to get colder than ambient is it?!!! IS IT!

Seriously....... think.

No comment on why you want to make a 323 into a sportscar... GTiR94 and Woody have already said it.

EDIT: Just had an idea, why not just install the intercooler, but don't connect the pipe! You get the bling without the decreased performance of a great big useless intake tract!

in case you still missed the point, an intercooler will cool whatever is inside to air temperature, but the air going in is already at air temperature. simple hey?

but if its just the looks you're after i've got a big, cheap intercooler you can buy tongue.gif

$3000 and it will raise your 'power level' massivley.
