An Importand Message to the Householder

Dear Resident

I am writing to seek your support for a proposal to phase out or ban audible car alarms. The noise from car alarms going off at all house of the day and night is becomming an increasing nuisance for inner city residents, particualarly those who live close to major parking stations in the valley.

As the chairperson for Community Policy, the Council representative for the most densely populated area of Queensland, and an inner city resident myself, this issue is one which concerns me greatly. This is not just a local issue. In the United States earlier this year, a forum identifies that 80% of calls to New York's quality of life hotline were related to car alarms.

Just as importand as the fact that they cause such a disturbance is that they are becomming increasingly ineggective. A recent AAMI report identified that 8 in 10 peopole totally ignored car alarms. Tha's becuase, as a study by Transportation alternatives in the US showed, 95-99% of the alarms were flase. I have even observed police walking past a public car park where an alarm is going off without attending.

I am calling for AUDIBLE car alarms to be banned -- but not car alarms per se. There are anti-theft devices which can be fitted to alarm systems and which are both cheaper and more effective. Silent engine immobilisers are less expensive than audible car alarms and work better. Car alarms can also be fixed to an immobiliser or a pager using the same sensor systems.

I have writeen to the State Government outlining my concern and encouraging them to become the first State in Australia to ban these out-dated, noisy and ineffective alarm systems. I hope you will join me in this campaign by signing the petition overleft and getting your friends and neighbours to sign.

it must be tough being woken up by car alarms in the valley. This is probably the same guy who wanted the clubs to shut earlier cause they were disrupting the tenants who lived nearby.

he doesnt want to ban alarms either, just audible ones.

Thats all well and good if someone is trying to steal the WHOLE car and you have a silent alarm, but where does it leave people like us that have all sorts of expensive parts etc that can be ripped out at the theives leisure?

At least if you have a noisy alarm they have to be quick which limits the amount of stuff that can be taken.

Maybe he wont mind hiring security for THE VALLEY so people can be rid of their alarms......

also how the hell can you enforce such a rule? Are the council workers/police going to walk around breaking peoples windows or kicking in panels to see if their alarm has a siren or not?

I cant understand why people live in a busy city areas if they cant stand noise???

Some insurance companies require an alarm to be fitted before they will even consider covering you vehicle... I bet they would have something to say about this.

Actually that raises a good point because if they did become illegal, that would only give me further incentive for puting an alarm on my car.

Why, because when the thing went off your car would be surrounded by 10 cops ready to defect you... what better security is there then that.

So i say, YES, make alarms illegal you dumb pollies!

hahah yeah you get broken into then get a defect notice for having a car alarm

well good one pollies

haha, that's the dumbest shit proposed.LOL. It's almost the case IF UR GETTING ROB DON'T YELL OR SCREAM. hrmm if the coucils wanna do constructive noise pollution control, they should visit a night roadwork crew, or better still install sound barrier fence along the entire railway link, but, then it cost money. as where the fines from such trivial banning audible alarms would produce revenues.

yeah i heard about this in america, i mean my car got broken into the other night and i would have never have known until the morning unless my alram didnt go off
all people need 2 do is turn the shock sensitivity down, so when a loud exhuasted car comes past they dont go off, cause if someone is gonna break in its gonna be threw the window/door and the alarm will sound as soon as door is opened in in 98% of cases the door is opened
so there u have it
another great report by me,

I think I'd rather know straight away that someone who shouldn't be, is in my car.
I'd rather chase the prick down the road in my jocks and double pluggers than go to leave for work the next morning and find all the stereo, gauges, wheels etc had been pilfered the night prior.
Fair enough that immobilisers can be silent blah, blah, but that doesn't help if someone wants a piece of your "in car entertainment system" does it now???
Come on pollies...I thought you guys were supposed to be somewhat intelligent.

I guess, in most cases, contents of the car aren't insured unless listed on the policy (I know mine aren't), so is old mate pollie going to pay for the replacement of all our shit in our cars????
I hardly think so.

I honestly think it'll never happen.....but I have been wrong before. You really can't trust a politician......especially when they are talking.

looks like the car alarm from 'robocop 2' will be getting installed.

That is once I work out how to make a flux capacitor, a warp drive, and find some kryptonite. laugh.gif

Like the old addage goes.

2 people pay attention to an alarm.

1. The thief
2. The owner.

Nobody else really gives a Fu(k, 'cept when they are annoyed by the sound they complain to the gov.

Dear Mr Hinchliffe,

I received your proposal to ban audible car alarms.

As a car enthusiast I must say that that is the biggest load of crap that I have ever read. You obviously do not understand that there are hundreds and even thousands of car enthusiast who have caught a thief in the process because of their AUDIBLE car alarms.

If you are so concerned about noise how about you move away from the city and into that retirement home.

hahah, nice work.

Over sensitive alarms do shit me off tho. Someone starting a v8 next to your car is not the same as someone trying to tow it away, alarms should (and can) realise this.

It would probably help if Australia had some standard for the design and fitment of alarms like the UK does.

PS. if you own one of those talking viper alarms or the ones that change pitch every two seconds like a child with a new ring tone, you my friend, are a wanker.

Luke.
