Hey guys. I've had some conflicting reports from people regarding engine swaps on P plates for the 180sx in QLD. I've got a 1990 180sx shell plated for ca18det and I am under the impression that it has to have the ca18 to be legal for me to drive it on P plates. Now, someone has said they have a S13 plated for ca18 but have a sr20 installed in it and have never had a problem from the police (they are also on p plates). Seeing as the same chassis 180sx did come with sr20 the next year (1991) would a sr20det sneak through on a 90 model without any hassles? I'm assuming not but just want to clarify. thanks. |

Upgrade to SR20 brakes and you will be fine. |

Both engines are able to be driven as long as you get an exemption (the sr20 has to be out of a s13 though because s14/15 engines have bigger turbos which won't get through exemption). |

I already have an r33 gtst brake kit on it, would that work or is HAS to be sr20 brakes for it to be p plate legal with a sr20det? For the engine swap to be legal (P plates or not) you have to upgrade to at least the turbo model brakes, Skyline/300zx hardware is more than enough. Any car is illegal if you take away from the factory braking system, so any less than the SR20det factory braking system - you have a defective car When i first registered it post-swap, I just got a roadworthy and drove to QT and put the different engine number on the new registration form. You won't get an office worker from QT come out and inspect your brakes... Unless upgrading brakes violates p-plate laws you should be fine. I don't know the specifics of the exemption, if you have to have it sorted before having the car rego'd in your name or not |

Well SR20DET's in 180sx's are seen as a 'replacement' engine in QT eyes as they were offered in the same model (not specific to '90 or '91) thus not affecting your no-engine-swap p-plate rule. No mod plate needed. |

Apparently Victoria is relaxing P plate laws for some V8's and turbo cars like the VW Golf, not sure whether this will extend into other states though.... Only on 2010 or newer vehicles with under 130kw/tonne. Doesn't really add many fun cars, few golfs, the turbo Cruze and Patrols/Land Cruisers that I know of. |

To my knowledge, the legislation in Queensland allows 125kw/tonne at the flywheel from factory. If the 180sx comes under this, you will need official Nissan paperwork to document it and then take this into DTMR and then pay the $35 or whatever the fee is to apply for an exemption to drive a "Moderately powered turbocharged vehicle". |
