Done a bit of work at the local orchard back home and during picking time you can only imagine the amount of back packers we would get there, was the best time of the year in my books, as 90% of the back packers would stay out on a friends property in the old shearers huts, and on the weekends we would get invited out to party with them, many great weekens were had, some of the women were drop dead gorgeous except for the farmers wives from Germany... they scared us

I alternated my weekends between Airlie beach and Great Keppel, a good mate was doing Uni in Rocky and his weekend job was to manage the hostel at Keppel over the weekend, the only rules we had was generator off by 10 and make sure the police never have to be involved. It was nothing to have a BBQ and party for 70 people at a time, never had any agro or dramas. You could sail ski and snorkel all day and party all night, I just liked the taller sporty ones and left it to the others the more "english" types, lol. It has changed a lot the whole backpacker market, it is all pre packaged and set times, more flashpackers, still a fair share of glams, but not the same adventure cheap fun types who did the fruit picking etc, partied with the locals etc. There was a few stereotypical Swedish ones that used to come through, all on the family coin, they were always a PITA to deal with, hairdryers and shit like that to deal with. I guess after a while you didn't even notice the topless sunbathing etc, just became the norm, it was only if mates came up from Brisbane you could realise a bit more how good it really was. Expo88 opened Brisbane up a hell of a lot to the greater world and the dodgy converted Queenslanders into backpackers and the all night long parties. I was never really into the Friday night go out and nightclubbing the smoke in those days was fn unbearable, rather see the Sunnyboys, Radiators or the Church at some thrasher pub or small venue. But as it turns out, 25 years on, I'm still together with my partner who I met at at Keppel and she just happened to come from Sweden, lol, |

On the music from the 90s topic...get the 2 albums by The Refreshments (Fizzy Fuzzy Big and Buzzy/The Bottle and Fresh Horses). A bit different, but let me know what you think. Japan has always been an interesting place and culture to me, haven't made it there yet, first time planned, Earthquake stuffed that, second time that fwit Alan Joyce pulled Qantas off the JAL leg. The Japanese backpackers were always a laugh, nothing fazed them, even less when they had a few drinks. There was a some Japanese girls who were supposed to be out here on English language studies, but what they did was bought a few XT250's and they rode different legs up and down the east coast and through the centre, I recognised the bikes in Sydney, Rockhampton, Cairns, Darwin and Uluru, brave stuff as they were only small girls yet they all managed and none of their parents knew. I took a pair of them out sailing and diving one weekend, it was just amazing to hear how this would be really there only time in their life they are free, they will be coming home to a expected career then marriage, both were drop dead gorgeous, but tough enough to camp out under the stars on the beach just with a few beers and fish and crays we caught cooked on the fire. Most were the same, the girls just had to have the "what goes on tour, stays on tour" adventure, parents under the impression they were travelling as a group, all organised, only to head back to the family expectations. |

Also, vk, if you likeThe Refreshments, the next thing to do is check out Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, which is the band they eventually turned into. Just really cool. Kind of Arizona Rock or something. In particular, the album Americano is excellent. |
