Hi Guys

Car : 1997 Skyline R33 Gtst
Suspension : Pedders Coilovers
Power : 230rwkw
Tyre sizes I am looking for :
F 235/40/18
R 265/35/18

I am looking for a tyre that will be street ONLY use , no track events...ever. In saying that i want it to be extremely grippy in both the dry(and especially wet) but last a fair amount of time.

My options so far are -

Toyo T1R - consistently the tyre that seems to be the best cost , durability and wet / dry weather wise. never a bad thing said about it

Federal SS 595 - what I was going to get until I started reading reviews talking about how bad they are in the wet, Are they bad int he wet?

Federal 595 RS - amazing performance but is a semi slick and car is street driven daily so durability is a factor

Dunlop SP9000/Dunlop Sport Maxx - only heard good things about this , not as popular as the T1R or SS 595

Yokahama Advan V103 - few good comments

Yokohama Advan A048 - few good comments

Falken 451/452 - a large range of comments from absolute best to a crappy street tyre....varied range of opinions.

Kumho KU36 - even though very grippy, might be overkill for daily driven car and not last as long as others

Kumho KU31 - good tyre but others on the list offer far superior performance

At this point , for my size , factor in wet and dry weather and for cost and durability Id say my best bet would be either the Toyo T1R or the Federal SS 595.

Opinions, suggestions?

Thanks in advance

I can only comment on the federals. The SS 595 really is that bad in the wet. Shockingly bad. The RS is the hardest semi-slick compound available so durability isn't THAT bad although being a semi slick they're noisy, harsh riding and not that great in the wet either.

the federal really are sh!t in the wet cornering etc was ok in the wet but try to go forwards at any sort of pace and you'll just end up like a bogan after the rains that and imo they didn't wear very well i've had the car 2 years and barly hit 10000k if even and the amount of camber wear i have is shocking(yes i know you can't blame the tyre for camber but when your only running 1 -1.5 degrees you expect alil more even wear. in the dry they griped up nicly

i run T1R on my r34, coudent be happier with it. even did a track day with them and they handled realy well.
I get around the 22-23000 km per set. U will be doing well for them to step out on you without trying.

testing on a holden capice ve limo 68000km still going dry better then the fk452 wet about the same as 452 noise very low yokohama db low

Bridgestone re002's are really good, they wear very well and grip awesome in the dry. Bit expensive though. I got 60,000 and 6 track days out of a set of re001's.

Kumho ku36 are my personal favourite though because of the price and because streetable semi slicks.

yeah ive heard this quite a bit and the reason im looking to purchase new tyres is that the back end slips out with bno effort whatsoever in the wet. Will definetly stay away from these then

22000km per set?? damn , that is way way above what Im expecting. This tyre consistently seems the best performing in both dry and wet and for a decent price to. Looks like its going to be the t1r's

yeah , ive been in skyline with ku36's and wow ....the grip is phenomenal...but it is kinda a semi slick isnt it? Probably wouldbt be the best idea daily that does about 300km per week.

Can comment on the KU31's, 36's, 595 RSR's and 595 SS's

KU31's are a good all rounder, ok grip ok wear ok noise ok in the wet. Dont expect supercar performance but ok for daily/run about. 30,000+ km form a set
ku36s' GREAT GRIP!! in the wet once they are 1/2 gone its non existant. 10-12k form a set, but they were seeing nebo 3+ nights a week.

595 SS AVOID! sloppy and noisy. I didnt like them
595 RS-R good for a semi-semislick 180 treadwear so a bit firmer that the 36's 160, but they still wear fast. use them on the racecar, got a season and a buff out of them.

The goodyear f1 asymec is one of the best tyres if you have the money or import from tirerack. read some of the tyre tests on EVO to see what people mean.
heard good things about the toyo, but never tried it.

I had the Toyo T1R on a previous car and they were great grip wise, except i thought they wore a bit quick. But that was 15,000Km.

If 10,000Km is your life expectancy out of a tire then I'm not sure how your driving, but it seems that these would be the go for you...

I found the 595's good value performance for money. KU36's are good when warm, not when cold. Haven't driven on them in the rain but I wouldn't expect too much.

If you are having trouble with sliding in the wet I suggest you change your driving style.

At least learn to hang it out there

I've had both Kumho KU-19 which I found for good pricing on sale, and they were a good tire in both dry and wet conditions with 310rwkw's in a VE. From memory I think I was lucky to get 18-20,000kms out of them.
I've now since put Falken FK452's on and I love them, definitely a better tire in both conditions then the Kumho and seem to be wearing a lot better too. Would say I've done at least 6-7,000 on them and they dont seem to be wearing bad at all

I had KU36's and they were brilliant. Cheap and lasted about 15-20k on my Golf GTI.

aloshan
Post #24

thanks for all the replies

the ku36's seem like the winner here though the km varies greatly but obviously that is dependant upong riving style.

Also as above they are not the best wet tyre either.

Rsr's are semi slicks and ss 595's are just too sh!t in the wet.

too many varied reports about the Falken FK452/f451's , some say they are amazing some say they are so bad they are dangerous....dont willing to risk it.

Only heard good things about t1r's , seem to last over 12000km in most cases and arent ridiculously expensive.

unless someone can give me a good reason not to take this route - Toyo T1R's it is!

Where are you getting prices for the Toyo's? I just priced Kuhmo KU36's in 265/35R18 today at Bob Jane while I was getting a puncture repaired, and I got told $385 a tyre shocked.gif

wasas
Post #26

yeah there are alot cheaper places to get the Kumhos, Check some of the site sponsorts here, stylish @ moss st do bargains, and option 1 are in bed with the distys too, although their prices have gone up ALOT.

if anyone has a cheap source for Kumhos I need a new set as well biggrin.gif

i payed $700 for 4 T1Rs last time i got them changed. that was actully in sydney but. (I drive brisbane to sydney quite regulary maby thats why i get a few more Ks out of them.)

I did get a few stupid quotes up here before hand. like $290 a tyre.

if its ur a daily drive car, there is no point in running semi slicks what so ever, just a waste of a tyre IMHO (tyre fitter with over 8 years in the game)

esp if you only live 10/15min drive to work or your drive is stop start peak hour traffic, why? casue you wont get enough heat into the to make the most of them. cold semi's would be funked in the wet, pretty sure you would end up finding a pole/another car.

you would be better off spending the money some thing like the following
new dunlop sp sport maxx RT
dunlop SP600 (OE fittment on 2012 R35 GTR's)
goodyear egale F1 directional 5's (an improvment on the awesome egale F1 GSD3)
i had the older GSD3 F1's on my vn in a 235/40/18 and the thing was as planted as a mountain goat in driving rain.

but from the list u have provided id go either the sport maxx or the kuhmo KU31's

thanks for the replies guys , sprtmaxx i heard is good but not in the same league as the ku36's or the t1r's.Plus they are very VERY expensive (im not spending over a grand on tyres for what is basically a daily driver)

i know of a few more really good tyres that would be miles out of his price range
that anit a dunlop/goodyear.

but my point about semi comps are usless for daily driving still stands
