Not going to get an exemption unless its for work purposes only then you'll only be able to drive it on set hours of the day, or if your family owns the car and its your only means on reasonable transport, so if you live near a train station or bus stop you'll probably be rejected. Only people who get given exemptions are mechanics basically. |

I have a mate who drives a 2003 wrx on his red p's. He got the exemption by filling out the form and attaching a spec sheet he got from Subaru which showed it was under 125kw/tonne. |

No because its based off the factory specs. |

Sharpy, You honestly should just have replies for these and other situations saved in a word pad in its own little desktop file for topics like this. You seem to repeat yourself a lot ahah. "search button" or "google" ftw? That...... .... is a funking good idea..... ...... that I will probably forget to do..... hahahhaha |

Im on my opens and i dont belive this law. they bought in this law to stop p platers driving performance cars but now they can get exempt and it sounds pretty easy too. So lets just say you did buy a wrx that is under the 125kw per tonn you get an exemption to drive it, you rip the stock turbo out and put on say a VF 34 or 35 turbo on it and tune it to 15 psi it will clearly be over the 125kw per tonn mark and still look stock to the naked eye and to any cop who pulls him over wont be able to tell/ prove that it is over that power to weight ratio? so we are back at square one or is there a law to prevent this from happening? |

Well V8's and higher capcity rotary engines are still out, so it's not back at square one. I do see the irony in the fact that I got my license 2 months after the new p plate laws came in and then the next year after I get my open, they go and change the game. I do feel this amendment has positive and negative consequences. It came about because a lot of cars are using turbochargers for fuel saving purposes as opposed to power applications, so there was a need for p platers to want to drive a newer, safer car that was cheaper to run. A number of P platers are taking advantage of this, but it's for moderately powered turbocharged cars (Veloster, golf gti ect), so I don't see the problem with that aspect. I drove a 184kw, 140kw/tonne S2000 on my P's and that was legal before the amendments. Eh. |

You also need to fit certain criteria to be eligible. for example, i applied for an exemption to go from learners to p-plate. I was granted the exemption & because i'm over 25, i went straight to green p-plate so i have no restrictions. i can drive v8's, turbos, etc. To be eligible for the exemption, from memory. you need to show that. by not being granted the exemption you will be put under great hardship. eg: 1) Need to drive to & from work, & during work, between jobs etc. 2) Medical reasons: you need to drive, yourself or a family member to & from doctor appointments on a regular basis. 3)To & from a place of study, tafe, uni etc. You also need to show that public transport is not a viable option. This is what i did. 1st; I got my boss to write a letter stating that i was an important member of the team & that i needed a p-plate license to drive to & from work, & also during the work day to & from jobs. (if we finished a job early i had to drive to the next job) That ruled public transport out as an option. My boss also wrote that i would lose my job, should i not get the exemption. 2nd; I wrote a letter explaining that I have a son whom i have 'court ordered' shared care of, so i needed a p-plate to drop him off & pick him up from school. I explained that circumstances had changed & the arrangement previously in place would no longer work due to the fact, my son had changed schools, & i had moved house. I also took a copy of the 'court orders' in as extra evidence to back-up my letter. The lady at the Transport Department, took 1 look at my application & granted me the exemption immediately, but i did make sure i had every base covered. Anyway bro, hope this helps & good-luck, I know how it feels, its ratshit. Laterz, RASTA |

More likely the TSI versions which are 1.4L. The GTI is more power than I would feel safe giving to a P Plater... |

Most of it has been said, and a lot of sh!t information in here too. First thing to be said, as a young p plater, WRX insurance is going to destroy you. Second thing is you don't NEED a wrx. There are heaps of NA versions available. If you insist, here is the info you require mate. If the car is under 125kw/tonne as per manufacturers specifications, you can apply under the moderately powered turbo/supercharged vehicle application. Link Here: http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Licensing/Gettin...e-vehicles.aspx You don't need to own it, but you need to apply for a specific car, and it needs to be rego'd. (you need to include the rego number, and the VIN). If approved you can ONLY DRIVE THAT WRX! not all wrx's. If it is over 125kw/tonne, you need to show it is for work, its the only possible car, severe hardship blah blah (also explained under the above link) Check the redbook site to see if the car you're looking at meets requirements http://tmr.redbook.com.au/search Don't forget the fee to lodge your application. if you are going to do it get a cheap silvia something you can afford to pay insurance on. or a 180 |

if you are going to do it get a cheap silvia something you can afford to pay insurance on. or a 180 Lol.... just LOL Ask yourself.... what type of people buy those cars? Ask yourself... what type of people are the highest crash risk Now compare answers. Basically, if you're young and you want a perfomance vehicle, be prepared to pay a high price because *drum roll* you are a high risk End of story, no one cares how cool you are, not even insurers |

I just bought my crappy little daily, perfect p plater car, 1995 cc lancer coupe, 1.5 carby 6.5L per 100km and insurence was $219 a year, yes my TURBO lancer is a lot more but it also has 5 times more power, seriously dude, buy something cheap that still looks ok, save your coin for when you are off your p's then go buy a GTR or something, or if your this way incline buy a cheap daily and buy a project car, work on it in your spare time, smash heaps of coin into that so when you get your opens flog off your cheap daily and you'll have a bull s!#tly nuts car straight away, not only that you will appreciate it more to cause you know all the time and money that went into it, and with this kind of repect your not as likely to get in it and flog it all day everyday cause you'll be worried that something will break or damage something and cost you more money in repairing it that spending time driving it. some of the things i have learnt the hard way over the last 15 years. |

Had the maloo since new, last year and the year before that was $1100premium through justcars. 25 currently. This year since its been a couple of years from xx offenses, I pay $750~. How they came up with that price is beyond me, but I wasn't one to argue, just paid the money and smiled while doing it. |

Check how much excess you will pay if you need to claim. You will probably find it is a quite a bit, hence why the premium is fairly low. |

But you pay a given premium a year, not a given excess. Only time you pay excess is if you're at fault. Works out to be a 25% chance that you have to pay excess. Works out in my favour. |

I have like $1200 excess (400 of it is "age premium" which may not be added on but i would guess certainly would be) for my turbo 32 4 door as a 20 year old p-plater. Didn't bother with full comp as i got it for chips anyways. If you're holding the steering wheel and run up the arse of the car ahead of you, then yes - count on it. But if you (not you personally... any <25yr old) end up parking at Westfields to catch the latest Twilight flick with your mates and the mother of all hailstorms gives your car a fisting in the car park... well, thats gonna happen wether you're 18 or 80 yrs old.. so you wouldnt expect an age excess to apply there seeeing as its irrelevant to the issue ![]() |

So if he has to use his 3rd party property it will be when he has a crash and is at fault so he will pay the age excess. Assuming he didn't get fire and theft, which come to think of it would be a bad assumption if you own a skyline. |

Wow $200 a month for an N/A XR6? I'm a green P Plater driving a Turbo Coupe making 150kw and I'm paying $102 a month. I'd understand that sort of premium if you were driving an XR6 Turbo but not N/A! Maybe they get written off at a hectic rate. |
