Why would you need a better weld to weld cracks in a chassis? They should be welded up ground flat then have a plate over them with only the top and bottom welded

I have a miller stick/tig on single phase, I could weld it with it. but this is more of an excause to get a mig and get flux core so i dont have to rent gas or anything and more suited for cars/panel work imo. i dont want to weld too many plates on(none would be better) since i dont want it picked up on rwc's etc

Ahhh Okay, more than likely the same as the one I have @ work. You should be able to TIG thin shit without warping it or burning holes. I just welded the Monaro Scoop onto the VL's bonnet by stitching about 1/2 an inch, leaving 2 inches until it was one nice bead right the way around without any warping.

Personally I'd rather use a TIG on thin shit over a Mig, but thats just me.

Yeah i could do it, but i would rather get a smallish mig so i can weld shit faster easyer i wana make some decent selfs for my shed to!

I am only an apprentice so i havnt had a whole lot to do with tic.
if i need a tig in the future i can steal one from work tongue.gif

Just some pics of the stuff ive done in the last few days. The hectic ghetto exhaust i made up:

Theres some method to my madness, so dont call me chaserface just yet. This is just a hack ute (that i incidentally love and will never get rid of) that cost a carton of piss and gets used primarily on stations to chase and yard wild bulls through the scrub, so it is inevitable that it sustains a fair bit of damage. This is the 3rd exhaust - the first one got ripped off in the scrub and was replaced with a complete OEM spec exhaust from an identical ute thats rusting away on the flats. That also got ripped off. Now, im a pretty hack job on the ARC welder so whatever. There wer a lot of hole left by tek screws that needed to be filled (hey, its what you do to get you home). The only other mounting to the vehicle behind the welded on y pipe is the wire tie, which is going to be left like that - it lets it have a bit of "give" to deflect the ripping effect of getting snagged on underlying brush. Thats also why its so short. I pinched the muffler off of an old navara and the front part of my masterpiece from anothfer old toyota. Jjst welded the 2 different flanges together and welded that to the headers. LIKE A BOSS.

The tray on this ute appears to have been made by a previous owner and quite poorly at that. The length of C Channel that mounts the numberplate, reverse lights and trailer light plug was used as an integral mount at the far rear, and subsequently failed because it just wasnt up to the job:

This is the rearmost point that the tray mounts to the vehicle, one on each side. The picture was taken jacked up a bit. When it failed, the tray collapsed down and when that big shift of weight occured while belting through rough, thick bush at 40kmh, the rest of the welds and studs also failed because of the pull on them combined with the bone jarring ride:

Bouncing around like we were, the bloody thing was about to fall off! Just 2 of the 8 mounts were still intact and they were only bolted not welded, and the bolts were quite loose as well. With no tools we were forced to turn home to repair this sucker:

Nope, not like a boss at all but like an apprentices first day. I hate busted arse old arc welders, im a namcy boy that cant weld unless its with a MIG. (Ed: theres been some more harsh driving and theyve all held up fine, so fingers crossed)

I also cleaned all of the shit out the back of the tray, was like the fucking hundred acre wood back there. Better now

Also, i got the passenger door to open, by bashing it hard with my shoulder like someone in an american movie trying to break down a door:

In conclusion, its entirely plausible that i write too much about menial tazks on shitbox cars. I  my ute!

The S2K has been out in the elements for over 2-3 months now since I took the carport down around December time.
I want to buy more gravel rash though, fill in the centre bit and extend the ramp out even further.

Picked it up from the dealership and drove it home for the first time. On my way home booked it in at tint-a-car for 18% on the rear window and side quarters and the new 'Octane' darkest legal for the sides. Should look good black on black smile.gif

Wow, what a day.

Up at 5am and drove to Brisbane to get a Tune.

16 Psi got me 320.6hp and a dead flat AFR readout of 12 (LOOK AT THAT BOOST HOLD WOO! lol)

Attached File  2011_04_30_21.50.02.jpg ( 1.15MB ) Number of downloads: 76

20 Psi (still falling off after 6500rpm) got me 350.0hp. again, AFR's 12 flat (this is a P.B. for me)

Attached File  2011_04_30_11.53.44.jpg ( 1.19MB ) Number of downloads: 63

Then I went out to the CHR drag day and got a 12.80 at 116mph, this time and the mph are again both P.B.'s and I know theres more in the old girl. (will post time slip tomorrow)

I'm so tired now though!

Thanks dude. TBH I'm not 100% sure. Its been fully stripped from behind the back seats -> back, all plastics, carpets, sound deadening etc (which tbh I regret - wtb comfort) and a roll cage put in.

so maybe 1100ish give or take?

was just running street tyres tonight, at 20psi. 235.45.17 khumo ku31's.
