Someone works 60hrs a week and gets a good wage because of it, finds it easier to pay workshops instead of doing work themselves. Between the time at work and family commitments it just makes alot more sense to pay someone else. |

That engine is for an auto, these engines have to be model number specific and as i have discovered they are very difficult to find in the HBF serial number that i am after for my 6 speed, You're not being serious are you? ![]() They're exactly the same engine. Auto vs manual relates to the ECU for the gearbox. You have a perfectly good ECU im assuming. The only variations between the alloytec engines is the cam phasing between a 175 and 190 in the VZ's. There is no difference between the sensors on the engine. |

That is fair enough, I guess what the crux of the matter is when ignorance accompanies the "my mechanic" mentality. The classic guy with every with every bit of bling bolted to his ride, along with the "it's got a $20 K engine etc", putting crap on everyone, thinking "his mechanic" knows all and we are just fkwits, then you have a run , blow the doors of them and it's always , some, tune or bad fuel fn circus, rather sad really. I know a lot of people in that time poor situation, but they don't develop some bromance with the mechanic, they just treat it like any other business matter, research, prepare, assess then action. There are a lot of mechanics who are underpaid for their skills and knowledge, but I have had to deal with the aftermath of the ones who are truly fn clueless parts changers, don't read manuals, user guides or seek professional advice when out of their depth. I have had lots of cars over the years and when I buy them I go over the receipts and I am staggered at the level of fwittedness that goes on, like replace head on prado $4.5k, the fkrs had the gall to charge customer for a dipstick they lost, as well as various bolts etc, over $100 , but the kicker was they put the old timing belt and tensioner back on, was due to be changed 3000klms later $100 in parts extra, yet waited to sting customer another $400 later. |

Hahah ok mate, clearlyyou have no idea, i have been going through this problom with many many mechanics, and Holden direct. All said the same thing. Clearly ![]() Ofcourse it couldn't simply be a matter of changing your bottom end for $1500 and a weekend of hands on. You should stick to dreaming of an ls1 transplant into your vz and tell us all how it went. ![]() |

It is a bit hard to say without knowing exactly, if punani has actually done this, maybe there is a way, but it would be odd if they changed a lot if anything auto to manual, I can see the dramas 175 kw to 190 kw. |

Sometime mechanics and holden say no just to remove the liability, maybe a sniff around at the wreckers and work out exactly the differences, but if your heart is set on a LS1 conversion go for it, just not a good finacial decision a lot of SS utes are hitting the market as the 4 year mark will be up from the "get a car" tax bonus, look around near end of june times, just watch them pile in. Cheers for the good advice, I have some thinking to do In reguards to the sourcing information about whether or not the engine has to be the same, iv spent months researching this, The engine still runs fine, just with a knocking noise, so i have had plenty of time to find out about this ![]() |

Not much. Engine, box, ecu, loom and a bit of BCM work. Be ready for the uneducated crew to jump in and start the "just sell it and buy one already done" comments. you'll also need to swap the k frame |

hey mate im doing it atm, and im 3/4 through just need a few things to finish it off, if you want any advice or details let me know? cause its all going pretty smooth atm. but spent a fair bit of $$$ to get it to this point. but its not far out of anyones reach as im an apprentice mechanic. ? |

it depends how good you are with a set of tolls, but anyone can do it. i have probably spent bout $8,000 so far. thats including 5.7l ls1 which i put cam and springs in, k frame, ssz brakes, 3.7.3 diff, 4l65e gearbox and mount, tailshaft, flexplate, all new plugs, leads, belts, and otr, radiator, twin thermo fans, new condenser lines and condenser to suit,still got a fair bit of stuff to buy. plus all your modules have to be changed over and all the under dash wiring, and your abs module and abs lines, fuel pump and lines at the end if motor doesnt come with them, plus you will need your pim reprogrammed that you get, and the key head to your bcm if it didnt come with one, and a whole lot of other things? probs missed a few things in this message. its fun to do but! |
