Hello,
I own a '74 TA22 Celica that is mod plated in QLD for its 18RG motor & gear box & added seatbelts.
But I have a NSW drivers license, and it would cost me a lot to get it engineer certified in NSW etc.. So I wanted to see if it was possible to register it in QLD.
I live just under the border in Tweed Heads, so I would be able to get a PO Box in Coolangatta, QLD. But I need a residential address, I have mates who are willing to help but I can't register it in someone elses name.

Has anyone been through this and do you have any idea's? I have my heart set on this car and really would like it to happen.

Im in the same boat, have to move to nsw for work reasons but my car has an engine conversion and I bet it will cost thousands to get it registered in nsw only to come back in a few years to have to register in in qld again.

this is what shits me about the states not recognizing each others authorizing bodies if an engineer says it meets adrs it should be fine for the whole country! i don't care if one state wants to be tougher than others hell if it worked this way qld engineers would probably get quite busy

all you have to do is have a qld garaging address, if your mate is happy to have you list his address as the address where the vehicle is garaged, then you need him to write a letter stating this with all his particulars and take it to qld transport. i believe then they just give you a qld CRN ONLY for the registration with your postal address as nsw. i think thats how it used to work when i was a rego clerk at a dealership, where people bought cars from us but lived interstate

This relates to a question I've never been able to get an answer to.

My understanding is that in WA LHD cars of any age may be registered?

If that's the case, what happens when they drive interstate?

In other words, can I register a car to a WA address and use it here?

From my understanding of it, unless you want to be sneaky and rego it in your mates name (i know youve said you cant, so i think you're stuffed) there isnt any other way of doing this...i dont know all the loopholes though, and given that its a government body, theres gonna be a few loopholes

I called up QLD roads and they said I can come in with my NSW license, a birth certificate & my medicare card. And the only proof i need for the garage address is a statement for that address in my name. So I've ordered a bank statement to the qld address. So I think it's going to work fine?

i believe in a round a bout way that is what ive said. ive never needed anything with a customers name on it when doing it for our dealership, just something stating that person 1 (the owner of car) is authorised to use person 2's address as their garaging address for transport. but either way the statement thing will work too.

Thanks Bender, the statement will arrive sometime early next week and I'll book a road worthy and get CTP then give it a try and write up on this thread if it works! I know a lot of people want to know the same question, yet I haven't found anything about it online.

The only problem with this is that if you get pulled up with a QLD registered car in your name and you have a NSW licence the NSW police believe they can fine you for being unregistered as it is "illegal" to own a qld registered car on a nsw licence .
I don't know if they can as I only got a warning for it (as far as I am aware you are supposed to register a car where it is garaged. Are you not?) and I pretty much just drove around crossing my fingers they didn't see me again
All I did to register my car in QLD under my name when I was in NSW was go into QLD transport get a form to say my car was being garaged at my sisters house in QLD (which it was ) get her to sign it and away I went with QLD rego with all my mail still getting sent to my address in NSW.

Hey guys the letter still hasn't arrived and I need it registered tomorrow, how would the letter have to be written? (Saying the car will be garaged at that address)

And will it only need a signature, or will it need the house owners license number etc.

Have NFI idea about the LHD thing, but an old bloke comes to my work every week and both of his cars have SA rego and have had for the last few years i have known him. I have no idea how he gets away with it since as far as i knew you had to change to qld rego after a few months of living here.

sorry for the late reply, but it will need his name, address, and qld crn/licence number also just something simple stating that VBowie's car will be garaged at the nominated address

You don't really even need that, i went into the qld transport at the pines with my mate and his licence and said i was living with him and 10 mins later my shiny plastic nsw licence was in the bin and i had a laminated piece of paper in my hand.

If you get pulled over and the cops are suss for some reason just tell them your on holidays.

And to answer wolfmans question im pretty sure that the vehicle your driving has to comply with the rules/regs in the state your driving in not the registered state.

I was told by someone a few weeks ago that the garaging address system has been done away with as he was going to try and pull that trick with his RB25 S14 but has since decided to track it because he believes you cant do it anymore. But truth be told i dont know if his info was correct but what i do know is i have done it. I registered my First Skyline in QLD with a NSW Licence.

to register a car in QLD you need a CRN(Customer Reference number or rather a profile like on a forum) which you normally have when you have a QLD licence, but if you dont have one you simply create a profile for yourself with the state as a new customer. When you are at transport grab a proof of garaging address form and take it to the persons house you will garaging the car at. They just have to put in their usual details like licence no. , name , address etc. and then sign it to say you garage your car at said address. Walk in and register your car, Simple smile.gif

I know most of this has somewhat already been said, but the information was fragmented and possibly confusing to some.
Good day smile.gif

The registration forms clearly state that proof of garaging address is one of the following and serves as proof that the address exists:

Qld drivers license, property rates notice, gas, phone, or elect account

You will also need a CRN: http://www.support.transport.qld.gov.au/qt...le/F3503_ES.pdf in which you need Identity documents: http://www.support.transport.qld.gov.au/qt...le/F4362_ES.pdf

Hi Jamie, unfortunately what you are proposing is almost certainly illegal. It's quite possible that you will avoid detection but before embarking on this plan you should know the potential legal pitfalls.

A garage address is defined as being the principal depot or base of operations of the vehicle so unless you plan to store the vehicle at your friends house instead of your own you are contravening the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2010 (Qld) s 105(1)(a). It's possible that you may be able to fly under the radar for quite some time but eventually police will put two and two together (usually through intel gathered during interceptions).

By nominating a false garage address you are also committing an offence under the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995 (Qld) s 52(2) (Making a false or misleading statement).

Potentially you could also fall afoul of the Criminal Code Act 1899 (Qld) s 408C(1)(d) (Fraud) in that you dishonestly obtained a benefit, namely vehicle registration.

Obviously there are also potential implications in relation to insurance and you would almost certainly face sanctions in NSW as well in relation to driving a QLD registered vehicle whilst living in NSW.

In answer to your question wolfman101, provided the interstate registered vehicle is registered under a corresponding law it may be driven in QLD irrespective of whether the vehicle is entirely compliant with QLD law - Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2010 (Qld) s 105.
