No which is why it is called bio-flex.

Hi guys, APC workshop here in Brisbane have done some tests and found that the level is not very consistent and to date they haven't seen a true 85% content,

Figures they reported where 60%, 65%, 68%, 70% 74% (74% being the highest so far)

I contacted caltex directly to ask what they blend the fuel with and here is the response:

-----------------------------------------------------------

Matt,
Caltex E85 is mixed with 30% volume of regular unleaded petrol (91 Octane) in the winter period, and 15%volume regular unleaded petrol in the summer period. The Octane rating of the E85 varies from 105 to 106, from winter period to summer, respectively.

Well even if it isn't full race spec. 105-106 octane petrol selling for $1L a is still brilliant

but it probably isn't a good idea to tune the shit right out of your engine on it like you would with track grade stuff.

Was having a good chat to the guy who does the tests on the Caltex e85 pumps around Brisbane,

in his words "stay away from the shit"

was telling me how far out the levels are, that they're mostly around 65-70%, with one being as low as 54%, and that the pumps are all rubber lined, so he's finding bits of rubber corroding into the fuel already.

He also mentioned that the tanks they use these days, are made of composite/fibre glass or somthing, and works fine for normal fuels, but the e85 is starting to eat away at the tanks themselves, and that Caltex are basically going to have to rip up all their stations, and install new tanks just for e85, or they're going to be in alot of shit down the track

Fuck. Not cool... Well I guess that has put an end into my E85 plan.

They should be using new tanks and not old petrol tanks.... thats why there isnt e85 at every station.

a bp rep told me not to run e 85 or any ethanol fuels in cars not designed to run it for the following reasons : ethanol is highly corrosive and will damage metal fuel system components needle n seats in carbies float bowls fuel lines and pump components, dont run it in cars that sit around for long periods ie weekend or once a month run cars for this reason , and also when it sits for long periods it will solidify. its also highly absorbent of moisture and not to run it in boats at all i have a $1700 repair bill that was paid by a fuel company (not aloud to disclose for legal reasons) for repairs to my el xr6, the ethanol fuel ate the fuel rails and damaged the pump and corroded the injectors and had to replace the tank as it filled up with sludge i was driving taxis and didnt drive the car for months at a time so it sat around. i have also found that i could do 800 ks to a tank of regular unleaded on the highway and about 900 on premium , but it dropped to 700 to 750 on the e85 , its not all its cracked up to be and unless you can tune your car or build the motor correctally to run on it there is no benifit to running it over premium or regular unleaded

You dont buy e85 for mileage, you buy it for motors that are tuned on e85 and its cheaper so it would work out to be the same.

the v8 super cars might run this fuel but they also rebuild their engines between races.
anyone thinking of running this in their car is crazy i reckon.
ethanol is the worst thing you could add to fuel, ask any decent mechanic and they will tell you not to use it.
i can see a lot of you having cars that are fucked in the near future.
i wont run it and never would.

to the person who said you can legally run toulene in your tank and wont get pinched for it, that is bull shit mate.
run toulene and get pulled over an emission tested and tell us how you go or go and tell a copper you have it in your tank and see what happens.

All the old timers think its so evil. Look at other countrys that have been running high % ethanol for years.. Why would car manufacturers release cars that are built for ethanol if it was to break down in the near future?

Bah, I used to think that too.

By the time you change fuel lines, upgrade fuel pumps & injectors, get a specific E85 tune, you're $2K out of pocket, and driving 1/2 the mileage you were before for only half the cost..
Just run 98, or if you wanna play with the big boys, MS109 / C16 and be done with it, save yourself the expense of upgrading shit for E85 to only get just as many miles per dollar.

that is engines that are built to run it which is totally different to your engine which is not built to run it.

What a load of uneducated bullshit. Oh, unleaded already has toulene in it.

Typical consunption drops are about 30% so it isn't too bad.
