Well I've been away for a week down in Mid-Western NSW, Mudgee to be exact for the wedding of my sister-in-law to her now husband. Normally I don't really get time to get the camera out and take any pics but I complained enough to get about 20 minutes collectively the day after, which had a lot better weather anyway!

The church.

The reception venue, which was the railway station but doesn't operate any more.

5 and 6 image pano's collectively. Both could be PP'd a bit better as I did batch HDR processing and then just sorted some dark patches with some masking in CS4. HDR'd with Photomatix pro3 (as always), stitched with Hugin (as always) and then PP'd in CS4 (again, as always).

Yeah it does look a little warped on an almost 180 degree pano..

Both are just as wide also.

This one is a tad over 180 degrees..

Well I went out early this morning with some guys from work to grab some images and this is what I've come back with.

The aim was to replicate (somewhat) an image of a hiphop trio but better it by A) Lighting (vs none in the target image) and  Having an interesting background (vs hallway). Having one of the two 'models' not turn up because he was still drunk didn't help things but really, apart from raining an hour into it, it wasn't really that bad. All images were taken in the same alley and in an hour (the rain killed the plans to move on and shoot for a few hours) so yeah, they seem a little stagnant (so don't hold that against me!)..

Going for a big money, strong high-pass look. C&C bitches!

I really like the 3rd one, i like the no shadow look.

Personal preference really, but i hate seeing shadows on the face that fide a feature, (unless heavily done on purpose). But it does suit the shoot style that your going for. All im saying is, i prefer the 3rd shot that doesn't have face shadows.

The second one, i like the composition and the lighting suits it awesomely. Maybe lift his face a little.

The two last ones are just not doing it for me. The headshot needs to have a more drastic lighting. I.e. One light on the left aiming at his face firing through a softbox and then another on 1/2 the power firing through a snoot onto the door behind him.

Just my thoughts.
Other than that, im just being a hard ass. As expected, if you take good pictures we'll rip on the tiny silly things.

That's what I want man, and I think you probably went easy on me too.

Taips, the 'model' hasn't done this before so posing isn't his thing but I think he did a great job, apart from being a bare-knuckle boxing champ or something my boss told me her certainly doesn't look like he could rip your face off, plus is nice enough I'd trust my kids with him.. If I had any..

Biggest issues I had were A) Not having 3 cybersyncs.. Don't know why I thought I had another.. HAHA!, plus I forgot my 1-2's and sync cords to sync the 3 flashes I brought via RF. Had to sync the 3rd shot with one flash with my little passive optical-slave, still, did a rim well enough.

Basically it was only a two light gig, with the only shot having 3 being the door-way one.

Last shot with the fan I had the STU at him and the bare rim pointing up to light the fan. Also it was raining so there was rain on the lens but I managed to mask it out with a quick test shot I took before-hand, luckily! Was a great hour, learnt to be more efficient with light placement and keeping a subject occupied with chit-chat whilst building up lights etc..

Who else has some CC?

Bassically i think you have done a amazing job. He looks a little uncomfortable in the pictures, but hey, as you said hes not a model.

I like the editing, its simple yet effective.

The 1st and 2nd image seem very staged and practically the same. The lighting is good however as you said you had troubles. Dont think you could improve on the image, its just a "Boring" type of image - Man squating- Man standing there...

The 3rd image and the last image i find the best, They both give him the "Tough man" look. They both have limited shadows which james said...Which i think works for them. You can see details in the images like the fan in the last one, but your not distracted by it due to the dull-ness which you've put into the editing. And the fact that he is brighter which makes him the focal point. He seems like he is strong and tough and is not afraid to use it. That syle of image suits it well. Maybe if he was closer to the wall in the last one it might fill the image more, it has a lot of Negative space.

the 4th one looks like a mug shot...Thats my oppinion on that one, ill say no more

Overall, i think you've done well!! I got a reflector of ebay, and it does wonders for these type of shots...Have you got one of those?

Nick_
Post #961

No reflector.. No sunlight = reflector useless haha. I just strobe it, I wouldn't mind one for a touch of fill or a blackside to absorb but probably one of those things I'll never buy or if I do I'll never use.. I can just use another strobe instead to compensate :D unlike yesterday where one probs would've helped with adding some fill from some overspray.

Nick you mentioned you wanted a hip-hop look, but i don't think its what the picture is portraying.. unless i read your description wrongly??

When i think of hiphop im thinking gangsta, whats up type look. I would have got him to take his jumper off and showed off his big arms.. Does he have any tats apart from the one on his neck??
Im thinking something like this with attitude: http://www1.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Busta+R...UQrAQjQ6DWl.jpg

But i do like the 3rd shot and the portrait shot of his face. Shows some character!!

Glad you had a bit of fun tho, and welcome to models canceling and not turning up..

So what do you think you would have done differently?

Nick_
Post #964

I would've not have had the rain rain on me! haha. Yeah I know what you mean with the Busta Rhymes shot, but I didn't want to go American 'G' style hiphop, I wanted a more local, australian feel, as if he was a local artist and aussie rap isn't gangster or thugstyle, well the good stuff anyway :P I think he's pretty well tattoo'd so that sort of look would've been there if I had went that way.

If i was to reshoot I'd probably bring my lead to sync the 3 without the optical slave, get a better day but that's probably all, the rest would've been in what we didnt get to do.

Well I'm going to be useless on the C&C as I'm really liking the entire set. Last shot is where it's at for me :P

Should of got him out singing in the rain or something :P

Nick_
Post #966

HAHA very boysIImen/backstreet boys :P

I think if he was an artist who wanted something I'd have come away with some better shots, but considering it was me, a fat white guy telling him how to be hiphop.. it gets rather stagnant really quickly, as you can see.

He's an awesome guy but and was excellent to work with, so easy going and willing to do anything so I may reshoot, i hope. Hopefully he can hook me up with a martial arts shoot too, like some fighting or something (you probably can't notice but that's a martial arts branded shirt under his hoody). That'd be pretty mad too.

A little boredom. Oh and that coffee cup is great, it's a silicon cup that's dishwasher safe etc.. so now I can take my own coffee to work rather than buy mcdonalds/starbucks/whatever shit! Only problem is it always feels cool outside even if the coffee is boiling inside.

Went to the beach. There were shells.

Nick try focus stacking. Im sure you know what it is.. There are some free softwares out there that can do it easily.

But otherwise liking these new shots.. Keep it up :argue:
oh and your dog is cute!! so want a puppy!!

Nick_
Post #974

Yeeeeeeeeeeah, focus stacking I kinda aren't interested in.. Not sure why but it just doesn't grab my attention enough.

Probably the effort involved in grabbing a tripod etc.. cause usually 99% of my shots are handheld, 1/250th max sync speed so I don't really need one..

Or maybe I'm just being lazy. I do have sharper shots with more DOF but I liked this ones DOF, because the front of that shell was pretty ugly and effed up!

fair enough.. just a thought thats all.

Not liking the black as the background on the bottle in the first set, looks a tad grey. I think it would be better fully black.

Nick_

Like fully sick?

Yeah if you note, it was shot at iso1000.. It would've been darker had I been not so lazy as to just stay on the ground and work with the camera rather than adjust my lights :P

52c per GB.. The USB drive is a 16gb that cost me $60 many months ago (perhaps almost 12). Say hello to a cheap-ass SSD for my garage-PC ;D
