ok guys so i was pulled over and had my car pretty much crawled over to get me for 1 defect.
that was my steering wheel they said it didnt meet ADR10 Standards
so i know certain limitations apply. A steering wheel cannot be reduced by more than 25mm from the factory steering wheel size but must not be less than 350mm. If a steering wheel is fitted with an airbag, it cannot be replaced or removed with an aftermarket steering wheel. Finally, every car must have a working horn, so having a horn button is also a requirement.

But what else is needed ? is there somwhere i can read what the ADR10 Specifcations on steering wheels are ? because my steering wheel meets all these standards listed.

any info would be great

Thanks.

Generally if the wheel doesn't have padding in the middle cops will defect it irrespective of whether it is ADR approved or not. Better that then having an accident and smashing your face into your steering wheel.

yeah well thats what they have defected me for.
but if some how my head could reach the wheel in my supra
i would be in alot more trouble then hitting my head.

Eh it's to protect you. I wouldn't complain just be glad you can still drive the car considering it's an "import"

It's usually up to the officers discretion. If you can find a similiar product and it shows it complies you may be able to argue it. Take note any one else who's reading this thread if you purchase a steering wheel and it states clearly on the box or where ever it is adr approved up to adr10 keep it handy in the car. Could save a lot of hassle.

Edit:
Some one may be able to help you further in regards to the legislation surrounding ADR10 but so far all I can come up with is this.

ADR10/01

I remember ages ago, Kai and myself looking into this a lot and could find nothing that stated that they needed padding in the middle after a certain date... 1995 i THINK dont hold me to this date though...

Couldn't find anything in ADR10, Transport Operations (Road Use Management—Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation 1999, or the DOT's little guide to light vehicle modifications, however I found this in the Industry codes of practice QLD:

QUOTE
The minimum diameter of any replacement steering wheel must not be less than 350
mm. The replacement wheel must be designed in a similar manner to the original (e.g.
padded centre hub and dished spokes) and the diameter must be no more than 26 mm
smaller than the original steering wheel.

No mention of date though, however my guess any recent cars say post 80's had some sort of padded centre in one form or another.
