hi, i need a general idea on how to set the timing, not just te dizzy timing as i am having big problems with my car not running properly and almost constantly backfiring through the air intake. any ideas? have already checked the compression to make sure it isnt a burnt out valve and all registered 170psi. thanks, carl.

your prob a tooth out on the dizzy

should be at 15° but you can wind it up to about 18 if you run permium

no its not the dizzy being out, its fine but when i check the timing it seems fairly eratic, like it doesnt stay steady. any ideas?

i think you have to take the tps off to get it into base timing mode

Crank angle sensor failure, it causes the ECU to misfire the coil and mess up the timing smile.gif

iv put a whole new distributor on it, which came off a working engine and i assume that the bit on the side is the crank angle sensor, i dont know a whole lot about it but anyway that stopped the problem of it running but eventually dying and making the catalytic converter glow and then not running until the engine cools down but now i still have the problem of it backfiring thru the air intake and not accelerating properly!!

Check fuel pressure and flow just incase

However, sounds like you dont have the dizzy 180 degrees out(ie firing cyl when both valves are open rather than both valves shut)

definitely not out by 180, also have put new injectors on it and checked they work. what is the tps as was mentioned earlier for base timing mode? what is strange is the motor came out of a running car but sat for about a year. since it had been sitting for that long i changed the injectors incase they had started to cease. what else could possibly be wrong? any ideas?

You only need to disconnect the TPC plug from the TPS, which stops the ECU from thinking it is under load and 'locks' base timing

what do u mean? do i do that and then checck the timing or what? basically all i know is timing is right, injectors and fuel pressure are fine, compression is fine, new ECU and its still having problems!!

pull the plug off the tps to set the base timing (have to set stock idle speed too) with no load on it too

Its not like an old carby car, the ECU advances and retards timing on the distributor electronicly, so the TPS plug needs to be disconnected to lock timing into a 'static' mode

so if it has eratic timing it could be a ecu problem?

Speaking of ECU problems, have you checked to see if your ECU has water in it? its a common problem on the VLs wink.gif The windscreen gets rust in the windscreen under the rubber and it leaks directly onto the ECU
