I've heard a lot of talk over the 186 being better than the 202. If they were standard or worked which do you
think would be better. any help with this would be good. Thanks thumbsup.gif

The old story goes that 186 rev harder but the 202 has more torque(pulling power) Ive had heaps of Holden 6's both 186 and 202...your call really...you cant go past extra cubes but a 186 is a good engine with a few tuff parts in it too!!

The only basic differences between a red 186 and a red 202, besides general design 'improvements' like rocker design, is the stroke, the piston (same bore but different gudgeon height), the main bearing size and the cam which is clearanced so that the rod bolts don't hit it in the 202.

Personally i would go with a Blue 202 ( 3.3) to build as they are already fitted with fully counter weighted cranks .

i was told that well the are both easy to rebuild but the 186 you could amost do blind folded lol

wooley
Post #6

202 you could pull down and put together blind lol both my 202s for sale are built to rev at 8gs all day everyday, speedway motors lol

ohh cool, yeah im just mainly concerned about the factor of if its gunna break or do any damage, but with that in mind, if something does go wrong, it should be a fairly easy job.

Thanks guys thumbsup.gif

Get a 186 and bore it out to 192 FOR THE WIN! Had it in my first car which was 66 HR and thats how i learnt about engines because theyre simple if you want a bit more complication but better motor go for a blue motor. just my opinion.

i just pulled a 186 out of my hz ute(dnt kno y it was in there in the first place?) it did rev a bit harder but it wasnt as torquey.i replaced it with a fresh high compression 202 and it can pull a loaded car trailer with no dramas.i reckon there both as good as each other.202 being a lot cheaper and easier to find.but its up to you.parts are readily avaliable for both.

If you are referring to "wooley" you might want to check out his sale thread first.... Seems to be a LOT of unhappy people paying for so called good items, and getting shit...Or not getting them at all...

STRAIGHT OUT OF HIS SALE THREAD...

Plenty of the old red 6's still getting around mate. You sure as hell can screw a lot of out them if you want ( just depends on how much you want to spend) or they are great cruisers too. I know the Blue is a little bit better base to start with as to the crank, but i will not stray away from my original set up in my HR of 186 Red, with 2 speed glide.

Mine is stock, was rebuilt in 95 from Repco, and still has the Repco seals on the motor now. So if looked after, they will give you plenty of trouble free years..

If you get the car, first thing i would do is pull out the points dizzy ( if fitted) and throw a Blue electronic in it's place. About $100.00 from most wreckers, and you will not mind spending it for how much easier they make starting. Plenty of cheap bolt on parts available still, e bay is loaded full of 350 Holley set ups now, and swap meets are an good source as well..Extractors are another cheap, bolt on deal in most cases. So they can be easy worked over on a small budget.

What do your "mates" think you should put in instead ?

well first off its an ex calder thunderdome race car, with the full spec 202 race engine, forged gear, monster cam, worked heads, the lot. but will probs tone it down, bcoz it will be a weapon and probably too much to handle for a learner.

mates say build up a 186 as thats what they are building, they pay me out saying 202's are shit, they'll break, but i dont think they realise what is done to the engine in this HQ. The fella we are buying it off has known my dad for 40 odd years and has been a panelbeater/spraypainter all his life so it'll be mickey. its already runnin a 350 holley on it too so another bonus. its a worked 4 speed gearbox also.

i know which engine i'd be keeping in the HQ, 202 all the way

Well if it has been built the way you say, who cares what your mates think... Stick with what is in it now.

cheers for the heads up about wooley dude.

mate if your a learner i wouldnt be worrying about building a hot motor.i have a hq and its absoloutly stock apart from ride height and exhaust.i get shit all the time from people.'ahh u should put a big blcok in it' and 'that would be great with a million cube motor' frankly im so sick t death of hearing people telling what motor to run.the hq has a 202 at the moment and it runs great.it has about 150 000 kms on it and still runs sweet.and it only cost me 20 bucks to get to the gold coast and back.

i really dont know why ur bothering building a hot motor.being a p plater your just gonna get shit from cops so just buy or build a stock motor and just cruise.

CAM-327
Post #17

yeah but its already got it in it, so theres no point taking it out, and im gunna tone it down a bit, i like a cruiser but i like go too. basically what our camaro is, 450 odd horse but a sweet as cruiser that uses hardly and fuel for the mods its got.

i have screwed together a couple of these red blue black 202's

202's got a bit of a bad rep when they come out as the holden pistons used to let go of the crown in pot number 6

then the blue 202 (3.3) came out, diffrent head bigger conrods and better crank

blacks were just an evolution of the game finally finishing with fuel injection.

186 came with adjustable rockers and 202 had hydraulic adjusted rockers

even xu1 had 202 motor near the end.

pick of the bunch, for a nice tuff street motor..

blue 202, crane 666cam, factory manifold and a ford xd webber carb and a set of extractors.

im rebuilding a pretty stout 202 at the moment that is a red 202 with blue rods, and an alloy blue head, 666 cam with acl pistons on a 40thou overbore. running a custom fuel injections system with a fuel only microtech and an blue dizzy with a jaycar programmable dizzy conversion.

really, its either or, both good, both bad.
