Hey - I was wondering what you guys thought about fj20det engines (in a datsun 1600). Would it be a reliable engine to drive as a fun daily - I don't intend to flog it and am only buying it since a friend is selling his to me for a very reasonable price (it allows me to save alot of money if i buy this one and not do my own up myself).

If anyone could tell me anything i should be aware of - the engine has been re-conditioned less than a year ago and hasn't been used on the track or anything - (and he doesn't flog it either).

Reason i'm asking this is coz i ran into a guy who told me that if he were to do a datsun up he would get a non-turbo sr20 for reliability, he said that a turbo'd fj20 would be unreliable.

Thanks guys.

providing the FJ is in good condition, I don't see any reliability problems. they are a pretty tough motor.
But a newer motor would always be better, FJ's are getting very long in the tooth and parts are getting harder to find. At least you'd never have problems finding SR bits

P.S: Even though the FJ's are DOHC, there designation is only FJ20ET, Nissan didn't use the D prefix back then

id say more reliable and stronger then a sr20.

but as above parts are harder to get.. but not impossible

dunno if its true but i have been told the fj20's go harder then SOHC rb20's but i dunno if thats right because i havnt had much to do with fj's

well considering an electric wheel chair with a flat battery goes harder then a SOHC rb20, i would say yes the fj20 would to0

hahaa good point.

I had a mate with a relatively budget built FJ in a sierra years ago run the thing around as a daily with about 18psi. Never broke and was reliable as anything, AND unlike an SR they dont need full rebuilds every 15-20,000klms

My last ride was a 1200 ute with a standard internaled fj20 you can see it in feature cars on fj20.com jasons1200ute. Standart internals with turbonetics t04e and 13bt injectors on dysons dyno with Craig tuning it made just on 350@ the wheels I ran on street Tyres11.5 but 124mph and drove it as my dailey for a couple of years even to Sydney and back one year. The only thing I got done was a head reco as I bent a valve twice over reving but that was 350@ the wheels and that's why I went the fj couldn't afford doing a built eng but how many sr20s hold 350ish on truely standard internals and I use to drive like every street was an excuss to flog it.Havnt known many people to have dramas with them, Parts wise gaskets ect are no worries and if you needed stuff like pistons ect you'd just go aftearket,Stewart Wilkins in Sydney has complete gasket sets oil pumps ect, down side they are heaps heavier than an sr,but know many in 1600 that still Handel sweet, look on ozdat and talk to some of them who have fj s in their cars,I could be just biased because have had all good experinces with them, had a series 3 trx with an fj years before also,
