you can put a winch on any bull bar... whether or not the bull bar stays attached to your car or the winch to the bar is a different story.

wat he said... the bullbar need to be firmly bolted directly to the chassis of the 4wd. and the bullbar need to be able to take the load of the winch as well

so basically the issue is the way the bar is attched to the car, and the winch attached to the bar? do winch bars have better supports so to speak that connect to the car?

exactly mate. winch bars are stronger all round with much stronger mounting points for attaching the bar to the vehicle and the winch to the bar.

ah yea, so should i get a new bar and sell the old one?or just put a winch on it and see how it goes. probs better to play it safe i think.. get a winch bar

would be the best idea... you dont want the bar to get ripped off the 4wd. could damage a lot of components.

yer. ill price one tomoro.'

probably not the damage really. as it would only damage the old bar. but you will find that you will have no front bar, or only part of one and STILL be stuck in whatever it was that you were winching out of. THEN, when somone finally comes to help. they'll laugh at you. Best save your pride. haha.

It'd be a similar look of embarrassment that you see when somone gets stuck on the beach and hasnt brought snatch straps, only to find out they never actually engages 4wd. lol

hahah, sounds u like u know that from personal experience?? lol..

not just going to damage the front bar... the winch is wired to the battery... dont really want the power cable from winch to battery to get ripped out... could be a bit messy...

ah, yes. it could be a bit... anyway,s ill worry about it tomoro. i just want one so i can go out by myself... are airlockers good bang for buck??

dobermann90

if there working properly. only catch is... as far as i know. you cant have air lockers and lsd.. so if the air lockers aren't locked... you got a set of open centre diffs. and if you got them locked.. and turn... you risk blowing the diff.

thats just wat i recall... i may be wrong... have a chat to arb or a 4wd mechanic.

sounds like your starting to build yourself i beastie offroader... good luck

im just doing a bit of research... its got the ifs, so its not gonna be insanely tough, but its gonna be fun. so whats the point of having air lockers if u cant turn? sound a bit useless to me, id be better putting shims in the diff and making it a tighter diff?? i dunno, ill look into it later on. i just dnt wanna spend up big on it, saving for a house so i thought ill get a 4wd and get outta the import scene... so far it hasnt been anywhere near as expensive, and i dnt think it will be and ill still be able to have fun.l

A proper winch bar is designed to accept a winch cradle or mount. The mount will transfer the load and gain support from the front chassis rails.

If you have a non winch or homemade bar you can make a simple box cradle to fit inside or too the ends of your chassis rails , this carrys the strain load , the bar is simply modified to fit over the cradle.

Think about it , would you trust an aluminium bullbar to take the strain of the winch on its own ? No

I've had several trucks with home made cradles , 10 or 12mm steel plate fully welded , use grade eight hardware to mount winch to cradle and cradle to chassis rails.

80 series GXL are full time 4wd. lol. I've pulled many people out of sand before though. It's funny cos thier wife/girlfriend always throws in "I told you it wasnt in4wd!" lol. kick a man while he's down.

you can turn... as long as the wheels are able to break traction and left the axles rotate at the same speeds. probably best to have a good talk to a 4wd shop and see wat they recommend for wat you want to do.

They're only meant to be used when you're in a hairy situation. you dont lock them like you lock hubs. its an ONLY WHEN NEEDED thing,

well then its possible to fit a winch but not without modifications strong enough to supprt it, if you cant do it yourself there are places out there that will modify the one you have but buy the time you pay them you would have been better off selling the one you have an getting a winch bar, doesnt have to be a brand new one...
