I'm thinking of purchasing one of these as a work commute/runabout. I realise it's a rather old, somewhat ugly car, but I've been eyeing a couple for sale of late in my area. Both late 80s manual 4WD Touring Wagons.

Fuel mileage, reliability? I believe these cars last forever, yes? Previous/current owner opinions please. Previous search results across these boards reveal nothing.

Subaru LOL. Seriously if you want cheap get a falcon, if you want reliability get a commodore.

Commodores are as reliable as a 90 year old's erection.

Want cheap and reliable, get a Camry. If you want an L-series, get a Leone Coupe - it's easier on the eyes and the fitting of a 4wd drivetrain is possible.

What? From cars in that era/price bracket subaru > the rest for reliability.

Wow, I never thought I'd see the day someone would call a commodore reliable, I own one and it's given me nothing but grief. my 81 model Corolla is more reliable than a commodore IMHO..

Sorry but don't know what this subi looks like that you are talking about. But I'm going to say get one anyway, still going now so it has to be more reliable.

I have owned a L series 4WD subi wagon, deadset could not kill the thing! Took it on the beach, camping and some great 4WD tracks (nothing too serious). I would highly recommend one, probably one of the most reliable cars I have owned.

+ 1 for reliability. we had a dodgy old subaru as a company car (which is mainly driven by teenagers) the thing copped an absolute hideing. every time it got serviced it needed new tyres. although it usually got serviced every 20,000 km's or so. it was an auto and was usually driven in low gears and always with the power button on. and any time it was reveresed it was quickly chucked into drive for wheel spin awesomness.

long story short the car is still running and still going strong. however our newer toyota yaris has already gone through its first gearbox. 3k later....

Only Subarus ive dealt with, have failed miserably.

Only commodores ive dealt with, havent had any major problems at all.

Just basing my opinion of personal experiences.

No offence bro, but you are talking out your arse

See sig. 97 Liberty that won't die. Also use an 04 Outback as a work hack car that has done 180 without a hitch, the previous work hack car was an 01 that did 220 without a problem before being written off.

Our old 94 Liberty is still getting around and is on it's 5th owner now. Has clocked over 370 now without an issue.

For about 10 years we had a 93 L series wagon that did 290 before the odometer stopped working. It lasted another 4 years before being driven into the ground and killed by rust (beach work), but it was used as paddock basher after that.

no offence taken, but im certainly not talking out of my ass.

-Have seen one heavily built WRX, a cruisy drive to the coast, engine completely fucked out half way there. Needed complete rebuild.
-RX with minimal to no mods that i know of, blown gearbox out of the blue.
-Liberty being used as a daily, not even pushed hard, cracked head.

Holdens i know of:

-my old EH had about 600,000 klms and was still going....
-numerous VLs my brother drove, idiot flogged the shit out of them, but still kept going needed nothing more then maybe a fuel pump or tyres tongue.gif
-Have a few friends with similiar commo's and not a single one has needed to see a mechanic to date.

As said, im just basing it on my own experiences and cars ive seen. My first post was meant as a bit of a joke also, but i still stand by my point.

You modify a car it causes problems. Most people know that. Hardly Subaru's fault. Like saying OMG bro I put a turbo on my 323 and it blew up. Mazdas make shit cars.
Blown gearbox can happen to any car
Cracked head. overheating. Low coolant. Wow. Such an unreliable car.

Check out anything like a JD Power survey on reliability. Subaru's are nearly always at the top in Europe. Any GM vehicle is generally down the bottom, no matter what brand it is.

We get high kms out of every Subaru we have had. Our neighbour has just cloked over 500 in his 96 Liberty Wagon, and there are a number of stupid high km Subaru Brumbies getting around in country areas. They are tough cars.

I'm no fanboy, never had an inclination to go out and buy one, but they are damm tough, damm reliable cars.

In all fairness, the commodores i was referring to were modified also.

I understand that gearbox failures and cracked heads can happen to any car, was just saying ive seen it happen to more Subarus than others.

If this guys wants one then go get one, no one will know how reliable it is until he tries it, so to the OP, goodluck mate. thumbsup.gif

Reckless modifiers.

People can get lucky with Commodores, but for the most part they aren't worth touching with a stick.

Subaru L-series are a pain in the arse to work on, but if you keep the vitals in check they last forever. My girlfriend used to have an Leone sedan, for all accounts it was a good car, reliable, but a pain in the arse to maintain(Strangely arranged engine bay).
