Post #1 post 15th February 2009 - 09:07 PM
HI all,

Looking at buying a newer car soon and im curious to find out about the engines.

Just wanted to know some pro's and con's on the Holden 4spd Alloytec 175 vs the 4spd Ford Barra 182.

I know they are two different engines and just wanting to find out what problems/opinions people have...

Any info would be great. thumbsup.gif

the ford is a much much much more reliable engine (they are taxi's for a reason)

if you can get the barra with a ZF gearbox behind it (the 6 speed item) then you will be laughing

Its cheap to convert to gas.

If i remember it correct, the Holden's V6 is more fuel efficient, but throw a set of extractors on the Ford's inline 6 and under regular driving it would be equalled out, plus the added power... blackers10 is correct too, they use Fords as taxis cause the motors generally last longer before catastropic failure! The list goes on, but we dont wann starta debate Ford vs Holden WW3

Im a holden man, and personally if I was going to go a 6 from ford or holden I'd go the Ford I6. Although keep in mind just because its a good engine doesn't necessarily mean the rest of the car will be good.

We got a BA I6 ute at work, aswell as a VZ V6 ute. Powerwise the Ford has it over the Holden, BUT the Ford is a car that we constantly have problems with in the way of wheel alignment etc and other problems associated with it, Has even had the Crossmember replaced, something that Ultra tune told us was a common thing to go with the Fords.

The VZ although its been in a 100kph accident with a twit that tried to do a U turn in front of it on a highway. Still drives like a dream, only thing thats been replaced is the Z bar bushes in the front.

At the end of the day though it really depends what your plans are for the car.

P.S. the guy who drives the Ford babies it, I drive the VZ and thrash the guts outta the thing.

hey mate, the 16 will have more power up top, the holden has its power down low, the ford is better for economy too, but it depends on how you drive it.

Im definately a ford boy but ive always been a sucker for an I6

Why? When he stated if he was to get a Ford it would be an auto XR6.

And it's they're NOT there.

Alfa Romeo use the new Commo block for the V6

Therefore it > the Ford engine

Just to throw something in there that's pretty random, typical from me, and not really on topic of showing any knowledge about the engines in question whatsoever.

yeh. im with 84rge, the holdens make more power down low, but he fords produce it up top. i personally wud got for the ford for a 6 cyl but wud go holden for an 8cyl. try not get a 4spd auto.. too many probs. 6spd FTW thats if u can afford a 06/07 build date or later.

almost no mods for the v6 where as if you were to for example go to www.kpmauto.com you will see heaps for the barra. plus its a straight 6, bmw use them for a reason.

the new commo engine is shit, at this momnet i'd rather a ford 6.

My cuz has had both utes as he changes every year and the ford turbo 6 is more fuel effecient then the vz v6, plus more power plus equally nicer drive.

hate to tell u but ur both wrong the new aloytechs are high reving motors and are shit down low, the ford motor has more down low but its not the power its the torque, havent been in a 175 alloytech but i have a 190kw alloytech and its not that great off the line but u cant escape a peak power is made at 6500rpm.

i would choose the falcon if u are looking to modify as there isnt alot of parts avaliable for the new alloytechs atm especially when they are skipping making stuff for the vz and going to the VE but ether or are both nice cars.

GTRwilson

Ive driven both of what you're looking at, and would have to say Holden was better in every way. most importantly, the ford interior looks weird as shit.

AVENGE
Post #28

Might also add, The Alloytechs in the Ve's are tuned differently to the VZ. The torque feels far better from the word go in the VE's, in the Vz's it feels like you have to wait till 2500rpm bevotr thr thing really starts to take off.

EUniqe

maybe cos the motors in the vzs and ves are different? 3.6l dohc vs 3.8l sohc????

Ahh no they're not, they're exact same engine just tuned differently

luxo-barge
Post #31

^eunique wrong.

VZ saw the release of the 3.6L Alloytech.

IMO, the ford 6 is a much much smoother engine. It actually sounds good over 4 grand, the holden sounds like its made from tin at those speeds.

Good point, i agree the new alloytech are more economic, buck lack power even more so to make up for it, and the difference is a bees dickk.

But if we are tlaking new motors then its the Barra 192 he wants, not the 182.

Next year the Barra will be a compltely new design as well.

There isnt too much avalable to modify the falcon either

But simple in the way that all you need is a BF XR6T exhaust, Thypoon lower air intake, XR6T Upper intake, K&N Filter and your good for 200rwhp all up about $400 worth of mods, match that with a 6 speed (as everyone else suggests the 4spd is SHIT) your looking at a great package, and the selective shift is awesome and funn for an "auto" car.

Then you can also look at getting 20% underdrives, LSD and Throttle Body spacer and your looking around 210rwhp

A bit more than a tune. They redesigned the timing chains and intake plenum to help with the harshness and horrible noise at high revs. The VE version is a much better engine....however the I6 is still smoother and has both more torque and power.

BADEZ
Post #34

yes the VZ saw the release of the 175 and 190 alloytech

and the VE carried it thru with the 180 and 195 alloytechs

opnly difference is that the high output motors in the VE were only put in the manuals not the auto

and eugine the 3.8SOHC is from the vy and lower but the 175 alloytech is only a SOHC motor

EUniqe
Post #35

oh yea i forgot about the vy :S
