Post #182

Wish i could but I was busy mowing the lawn and tidying up this shitty renter. I should go now. naaaaah, I will definitely be there for the 3rd of August show.

Train was done at the end of my street, Deagon Station, was a little weird but luckily it was like 9:30-10 at night so no sucker was there apart from some drunk chick who got off at the wrong side and preceded to swear like a crazy bitch into her phone whilst clumsily climbing the stairs..

T'was interesting.

Yeah mate, will do fosho. Am ebaying my Nissin flash for an adjustable unit (hopefully someone buys it) and if i get a decent enough tax return a B&H strobist kit is going on order too (minus the Viv's).

Am trying to get a Sb-24 or similar through a guy there locally Brisbane Camera Hire, nice guy and does a lot of phone work hunting parts/s-hand stuff you want so props to him for help so far.

Plus he can do second-hand gear for us too, stands, umbrellas etc.

Tim you should go buy a single stand kit off him, cheap as and good quality gear just used. I think it's under $100 for a whole kit inc stand.

Dont diss lightroom!!, i use it for all my motorsport stuff...for large batchs of photos nothing beats it

Nick_
Post #189

CS3 does everything and more son! You just gotta know how to do it.

Here's a lame shot of the poor lonely teddy again, waiting for my net to be reconnected after stupid ISP decided to screw their own auth systems in the ass causing QLD to go down. Thumbs up iinet!

[attachment=546948:attachment]

3 exposures, one no strobe, one from bottom left one from top right them layer masked, toned, desat and B&W filter -10 in the max black effect for some dark moody type shit.

It's a stove! I didn't have time and it was kinda there, it's the cats toy! was just something to test the kit out with. Sounds like Tim (08FTW) and I may get out and snap some wheels this weekend so that'll be a good hardout shoot for us both to sink our teeth into.

Yeah two SB-24's would be sweet with a hook-up just like yours but at the moment I've got a few things with 4 zeros I need to save the cash for so it's gonna be a lame kit for a while. Damn this "strobist movement" and their lust for good equipment, strobist.blogspot mentions they're $50 but now everyones getting into it SB-24's are now like $150 even though they're a relatively old unit. Hoping to pick up some old pre-loved "aka half stuffed" units somewhere with PC sockets to get me by for a while. Trying to eBay my nissin flash but only like 3 people have looked at it! HAHA! but quite a few have checked out my 58mm Polarizer, damn that!

When I bought my gear this old dude with parkinsons was chewing my ear off about shit like how some people complain about his kit when their ebay triggers don't work etc and I was actually at work (i work on the road) and telling him to hurry up, took him an hour to sell me this kit when I came in and told him exactly what I wanted. Don't EVER attempt to buy something from Dragon Image when you DON'T have an hour to WASTE with this guy repeating himself ever 3rd sentence. GOD!

Then the new guy rubbed half my triton off on a 30ft concrete power pole on the footpath when we finally were on our way. Nice going man.

Well I again have grabbed another.. kind of "household product to practice on.

First shot is a blend of 3 in the traditional layer masking of two different strobed shots with one exposed for the background. Burning, painting, this and that..

[attachment=547889:attachment]

Working on the second I'll post when I'm done.. Perhaps I should start checking out some mower forums I can shoot for :P

caseyjohnphotography
Post #198

good stuff nick, this is the sort of stuff you will get better at

more flashes will help also, but good work :P

Nick_
Post #199

Second shot..

They do look a little 'fake' to me but eh, I'm not really going hard out, just going through the process etc..

[attachment=547902:attachment]

Yeah more flashes will help so i don't have to move my one stand around all the time :P

i like it... try using the bluring tool around the edge of the layer mask...its just looks alittle too sharp..bluring it slightly will make it looke more real...and burn the silver handles...

ahh hardest thing with multiable shot blending is makeing it look real...im having a nightmare at the moment with some shots im trying to do lol...but its good fun

lol look like its been shoped on to the ground, looks pretty shmick though, will be nice when you do that with some wheels or somthing

Yeah I wasn't sure which route to take with the handle, either leave it with the flash reflection or go with the keylight exposure, I think I did one with each way.

It is fun, also a bit difficult, especially with a non-calibrated monitor, I find myself moving my head to try and see the image from all angles on my monitor to avoid missing parts that I cannot see looking at it from one angle and not another etc..

I might take the mighty old magna out to the new part of North Lakes for some real practice, faded paint, steelies and smoking - what a weapon!

Post #203

Being rather bored today I was stuffing around with the new gear and noticed that my "Phottix v2" radio triggers DON'T have PC sync ports! Oh noes!

Easily fixed, I'm going to modify both the Phottix slaves and my Nissin flash for 3.5mm stereo leads instead of PC sync (stereo gives both +, - and shield) and figured I'd do the photog-style thing and take pics of what I'm doing etc in case anyone else here is in the same boat and has atleast MINIMAL proficiency with soldering.

I'm also going to be modifying my Nissin flash that only has hot-shoe to have the same female stereo 3.5mm jack so I can connect the slave and flash with a simple 10cm long male to male 3.5mm cord (I have heaps laying around from my work which arn't needed/used).

Here are some simple pics to illustrate the plan and Monday before work I'll perform the 5 second surgery and then I can velcro the slave to the flash and use the flashes now disconnected hot-shoe to screw directly to the umbrella adapter with no worry of shorting the hot-shoe to the stand (which really shouldn't be a worry unless the flash is badly designed). Also there is a bolt that screws the foot onto my model of slaves and if this bolt came loose and the slave was fired it will possibly fry the terminals underneath it with no-doubt obscure transistors that i couldn't replace.

[attachment=548565:attachment]

The final product will not be pretty but it will be 100% functional and that's all that matters!

Anyone get any shots of the great sunset we just had?

Here's a poor excuse for photography, no tripod shot at 1/8. Only editing was a tweak in curves and border (and resize).

Post #207

Well I have been browsing ebay looking for a nikon flash to use as the main light in my slowly building kit, and I happened to up a bid by $1 and thought I'd get out bid in the 2 hours until the auction ended, I was wrong.

I now own a Nikon SB-25 that's about as well worn as old football socks BUT it works and works well. It is the only one with adjustable power so I'm glad I did finally get one, I was not going to go Vivitar just because I've heard they arn't the greatest and for similar money I could get a SB-25/26 but I ended up getting this one for $60 posted. Not bad.

Here is my A-team, both Phottix wireless flashes are now modified to shoot via cables not hot-shoe (originally they could not, this quickly changed with some wire and a soldering iron :dunno: )/

[attachment=551803:attachment]

EDIT-

Here are the final shots of the flashes set up.

This one is the modification of the Nissin, hardwired the RF trigger to it.

[attachment=551881:attachment]

This is the trigger showing what was soldered where, it was easy peasy, soldered grey to neg, orange to pos and then soldered these to the pos and neg terminals inside the flash whilst removing said pos and neg terminals from the hot shoe to avoid any shorting.

[attachment=551882:attachment]

This is the shot of the Nikon, showing the modified trigger but no mods has to be done to the flash gun as I was supplied a PC sync cable with the set and I used this to plug into the PC port on the Nikon and wham, job done, nice and neat.

[attachment=551883:attachment]

matt mead
Post #208

very nice nick...i think im going to have to copy that mod

Nick_
Post #209

Yeah, I guess we're in the same unlucky boat of not having pc sync ports on our triggers unlike Tyson or those with decent triggers.

V-easy if you can wield a soldering iron without convulsing into epileptic fits, no reason anyone CANT do it.

Well was bored this arvo and decided to try my hand at some garden photography. Most of it is shite, I don't mind the chilli but the shots could have been a lot better, I think I shall try again some day with those.
