hmm the last one looks cozy.. lol :S
great shotz.
and i think he's talking about the bridge

If he is then yeah, because it was massively bright sunlight and my darkest shot in the AEB was 1/8000th it kinda makes it hard, hopefully tonight I can get some night HDR because I'm yet to try that (just dropped home from work to grab my gear )

Nothing really turned out as I wished. I need a lens hood, thats for sure, damn lens flare ALL the time!

Two shots but even then they're pretty much crapola.

A handful from the archie prac day. First time using my 50mm EF-S II whilst panning and I must say that I was not really impressed, mainly because with the crop-body I didn't get really that much room to work with (1.6x50=80mm focal length). Should've put on the 17-85 BUT it was getting dark fast (17-85 is 4-5.6 50 is 1.8) and also ad that to the fact that I couldn't get there any sooner than 4:50 which was pretty shithouse. Drifting had already been going since 4.

Oh well, next week!

try bumping up the iso next time i heard the 40d is pretty good with high iso

Ghetto Panda
Post #152

More ISO for sure at least 400 or higher i would even drop the shutter to 40th or lower.

Nick_
Post #153

Yeah i started on 80th f/1.8 ISO 100, then 320 then 400 whilst sticking around the 60th-80th range. Eventually it just got too dark and the 50 wouldnt hunt because of low contrast even at f/1.8.

Was a bit of a disappointing evening, First time ever really moving off ISO100 (I hate noise), apparently the 40D is decent even at ISO800 but by that time it was getting too dark and the 50 was hunting already so I called it a night.

Wanted to get some good shots of the red 86 with the mesh wheels as a guy hit me up for some pics - which is a tad disappointing too, but maybe next week he'll just have to come earlier and I'll stick to my 17-85.

(Late addition, I haven't been through all of them yet)

Well I decided to do something completely moronic and sold my 40D.

Nahhhhhhh, instead I got up at half five this morning and drove to the Sandgate jetty, bed-hair and all to grab the sunrise, surprising (to me anyway) there were a few others there with the same idea except they had obviously planned what I didn't at half ten last night, they had warmer clothes and some breakfast.. I had bed-hair and red eyes.

This old truck at Bracken Ridge has caught my eye quite a few times so last night I went and did some painting. Not real great, had more ideas but a road train with no one in it, all grown over, dark night and random noises all added to my nerves and bailed after about 10 or so exposures as well as the fact the Nissin flash was slowly running out of batteries (a minute to refresh in the end).

3 blended shots to grab the cabin, sky and bull bar.

[attachment=533918:attachment]

The usual, desat, little dodging and burning etc.. 20sec exposures at f/7.1 - ISO100 and ignoring the rule of thirds as always

Re-edit of a shot the other week.

[attachment=533424:attachment]

I think it's much better, blended 2 instead of HDR has given the smooth water and a bit more light and life to the shot.

CC on the last two?

i definitely like the truck.... my style of photo.. what i wouldve done tho is have the truck more towards the bottom of the photo if you get me, it kinda seems to be floating around the centre of the photo... what would look real mad would be to get like the stars and moon in the background, or something in the background.. next time maybe try offsetting your objects from the center of the photos.. those 2 flicks have the objects almost perfectly centred in the photo and it kinda looks a bit 'staged' if you get me..

hope you dont take that the wrong way, i really love the photos, just throwing a few ideas around... nice work

Haha nah mate, it's CC, that's the idea! I know what you mean too, I did try the rule of thirds rather than have heaps of sky etc, the moon wasn't in the right position either and I couldn't shoot it from the other side because of the fence.

I did frame it that way though as I wanted a lead up to the truck rather than start the bottom of the frame with it but that doesn't mean my ideas are always the best. I shall get back to take some more snaps of it soon - it doesn't look like it's going anywhere!

Oh and that's cool Matt. I'll just hunt you down and trash your shit.

hahaha i know exactly where that truck is! ive always had that idea of going and somehow trying to get some interesting photos of it! go past it like twice a week! where bouts on the northside are you nick?

and the city shot is nice. the reflection is great, also i agree with what gravy said about the truck, more back ground like stars, moon etc would of made it awesome

Yeah it was a pretty starless night and without being able to move around too freely because i wanted a lot of foreground i kinda had to give that up.

I'm like.. a decent walk from that truck in Deagon near the KFC and Red Rooster.

Next time I'm going to try for a morning shot with the sun just peeking over the building and doing some HDR and tone mapping on it.

bergie_318is
Post #163

yeah i rekcon a morning shot with it would be better... jsut think off all that fog that lays around that area would add some great effect to it.

i know that area nick, i live round chermside myself, but my missus works at deagon hair fashions you know that joint? just down a bit from the KFC

Yeah well.. it's cold man! How bout you get up at 6am and go take the photo, send it to me and i'll post it as mine. :P

Nah don't know that place, my mrs only gets her hair done at places that always end up costing a fortune.

Weeeeeee, eBay goodies arrived yesterday.

.6 graduated ND filter, leather camera strap and a hood for my 17-85.

Went out to take a shot of the skyline just before but it was flaring like a biatch, couldn't hide it in direct line with the sun.. Think it's time for a bit of a clean for this lens and the new filter too.. New strap is nice and soft, plus it has quick release clips for tripod work (Tested the straps before i put them on, pretty damn strong! - I couldn't break them - not that I was trying real hard but i'd say at least 30kg of pressure, i'm surprised) and my hood is just a knock off $9 item.

Now i just need a polarizer and shutter cable and I'm happy for a little.. then I want the Sigma 10-20 dc hsm!

Anyone want to swap a 58mm polarizer for a 67mm ??

Nick_
Post #166

Well I had a quick play with my optic slave, which is pretty shit because the on-camera flash nails 99% of the picture so it was actually kinda pointless.. I just liked this pic :P

This poor teddy has been living on the kitchen-slash-dining-slash-living room floor since we moved (4 weeks now I think) and has sometimes been seen kickin' it in the cats mouth :pissed: sad.

I dig your truck very cool shot would have been cool to do a really long exposure like a minute or two, but then it would'nt have that darkness to it but me likes anyway.
Post more pics.

Nick_
Post #170

Yeah I don't have a remote yet so I can't really do the bulb, also cars go past there often so I also think perhaps the headlights will mess with it, and the lights on the wall of the grid next to the truck would flare like a mofo..

Maybe i just need to throw some big rocks to fix the last one.. Hmmm..

Well today I went and checked out a church in the CBD and happened to tag along to a tour of it as it's only finished being built after the foundation stone was laid in 1901 (Yes! I actually listened!), Here is some beginners HDR.

First one just looks like the different exposures used don't match up exactly and gives it an uneven look. Second one is better but people in the bottom corner i find distracting not to mention it isn't straight. Third is definately a winner looks very good maybe a little contrast or something to give it some pop it would look unreal.

bergie_318is
Post #173

agree completley with panda, the third is the money maker there. i just started out HDR myself, sucks when you dont have a camera auto bracketing, but luckily you do!

bergie_318is
Post #174

oh and nick what do you use to process your HDR photos??

Nick_
Post #175

Haha yeah, it was insanely hard to try and get straight shots when im not allowed on half of the floor etc.. with some old dude boasting to me he's been photographing this place for 35 years and im not to do what he can do etc.. rah rah whatever champ, then he has a drool over my camera and whips out a massivel-awesome 3MP compact - eh! what a pro!

I didn't really have much time to spend on those and i actually desaturated the last one to make it less pink as the limestone really absored the reds I think (behind a reddish colour itself). Will have to spank that perspective tool.

Speaking of tools, thanks for the CC :P

I open my pics in Adobe Bridge and then Merge To HDR in the Photoshop (CS3) menu.

Sometimes I don't use AEB so its no big deal man, just use spot metering, meter the high, mid and low spots and then you know what shutter to set to - don't adjust your aperture though or it'll be all half fuzzy and stuff.
