how do you go about getting the new updated maps for these navman, tom tom and things? are they expensive?
When i bought maps for my garmin gpsmap60csx it was almost $300!! and i only get the first update free!!

Just go to the relevant manufacturer website - It usually costs between $100-$150 to update the maps for the whole country. But yes, ~$300 is the general price for maps from scratch.

There has been rumour that they're planning on releasing the updates in regions, so you can just update say Queensland, instead of all of Australia - useful if you never leave the State and have to pay for everywhere else. Generally though, unless you're someone who works/lives in new estates, you can get away with older versions.

Hey Rookie, guess what?

That S50 sale rom Thursday.... it was fucked too! Sold the guy a Tom Tom One XL instead....

He's uploading his maps from his computer, and guess what, the USB cable was fucked, and WIPED his Tom Tom One XL I just sold him! Poor bastard! lol.

He looked it up on the internet, the Tom Tom One XL is known to have a common fault with the USB cable chord at the GPS end.

EDIT: I felt sorry for the @#$!, so I let him exchange it for another Tom Tom One XL I had picked up from another store again. haha.

Rookie ROX
Post #46

Haha.

Have you had many issues with the charging cable failing on the XLs? I've had a number of returns with the USB plug breaking inside and therefore only working when it's wiggled the right way. Apart from that, no issues with the XLs. Unless of course that's what you mean by the cable cord.

GO720 doesn't have that issue though laugh.gif

First issue I've had thus far.

He doesn't plan on using the upload feature anymore though lol. Prefers the Tom Tom interface to the Navman's too.

That's what I meant, yes.

I haven't seen the USB cable for the 720? But for $789, it wouldn't WANT to have any issues. haha.

Hopefully some of you guys came down to Harvey Norman over the weekend and got a bargain

Psh, I know where to get better deals wink.gif

The GO720 redesigned the charging cable with a squarer base to limit the vibration which would crack the solder and connection;

All Tom Tom units had $100 price drop about 6wks ago.

The Go720 can be had for about $500 new these days if you keep your eyes open in shop catalogues.

You're a funny man.

I've seen more Navmans back than 'your' company owns. Heck I've had one guy go through five of them alone.

Having said that, there's a software patch available from their website.

I also know you can pick up a XL with a soft case for $388.

I own a Navman S80. I was aware of the software issues but there was a service pack available from the Navman site.

Why did I buy the Navman when I knew it had problems? It's a decent price for the features you get.

TTS & Bluetooth. Alot of the bottom end models don't have TTS which is very handy. I was looking at the TomTom but for the features I wanted it was just too expensive.

I got mine for $450.

I use the bluetooth quite a bit as it syncs to your phone and acts as a handsfree, you can also SMS and browse phonebook etc from the Navman.

Had it for 4 months now and hasn't failed me yet.

I got mine for a flys dick over $800 if I remember correctly, from ryda.com.au .... Was a while before the 720 was released, so rrp was still well over $1000. Ryda has some half decent prices, and the two GPS units I've bought from there both arrived in 24 hours of the order (with all the freebies they promise)... Pretty decent store imo, A+++, will use again, gl with it, nice piks.
